@ellii2 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, there's no easy way to tell. The best way is to study and memorize a list of common irregular verbs. If you google "irregular verb list" a lot of free ones will come up. We have a good list on our teacher site (paid), so if your teacher is an Ellii subscriber you could ask them to print this out for you: ellii.com/resources/grammar-usage/2275-irregular-verb-list-present-past-past-participle

I was a TV camera operator who participated in my position, wearing a headset to listen what the producer was telling me to do.

When you say it can also be a continuing action into the future ....doesn't that make it perfect continuous ???
@ellii Жыл бұрын
Great question! The difference between the present perfect and the present perfect progressive (continuous) is related to future time (uses/examples 2 and 3). Here are the uses: Use the present perfect for (1) an action that happened in the past at an undefined time, or (2) an action that started in the past and continued to the present and MIGHT continue in the future. Use the present perfect progressive for (3) an action that started in the past, continues to the present, and WILL continue in the future for sure. Here are some examples: (1) I have already studied Chapter 5. (PP - finished action) (2) I have lived in Colombia for the past two years. (PP - focus is on the last two years - we're not sure if the speaker will continue living there or will move) (3) I have been living in Colombia for the past two years. (PPP - focus is on the last two years and the future - we're sure the speaker will continue living there)

Hello, I have a question My brother got married with a young British girl last year. Is it correct? "got married with" . What is the difference about "get married" and "married"? I really hope your reply at this question. Thanks a lot.
@ellii8 ай бұрын
Hi! Good question. First of all, "got married to" is more common than "got married with." To answer your question, "get married" (or "be married') is the passive form of the verb "marry." We commonly use the passive form because someone has to marry you (e.g., a priest or justice of the peace). So it's correct and very common to say "He got married to her last year (by the priest)" or, less commonly, "He was married to her last year (by the priest)." Marriage is a common event, so we usually prefer the common, casual passive form of "get" instead of "be" (plus the past participle "married"). But we don't always have to refer to the person who married the couple. We can also just refer to the action "marry." That's why "He married her last year" is also totally correct. You have three choices, but I would say that the passive with "get" is the most common form, at least in American and Canadian English. Your sentence above sounds best like this: My brother got married to a young British girl last year. Hope that helps!

Your Australia example is great! Be careful when forming the present perfect when the main verb is "have." The present perfect is have/has + had. Your second sentence should be: "He has had a dog for five years."

How do you improve your grammar when you're not in the mood to practice?
@ellii Жыл бұрын
This is a great question, Shou. You can try these tips: - Watch videos! Videos are usually more entertaining than a textbook or audio recording, so they might motivate you to study. - Remind yourself of your language-learning goals. Do you want a new job, to live in another country, or simply to communicate with more people? Thinking of your big-picture goals might remind you why you need to study. - Set rewards. For example, if you study for half an hour, go for a 10-minute stroll. Or if you study for two hours, reward yourself with dinner out with friends or your favorite show. - Practice a language in ways other than studying. Talking with friends or sending text messages in English is still practice, and you're still using grammar, but it's much more fun! Hope that helps and happy studying!

you said that it doesn't show when the action took a place, but in the example (she has worked at this office for 12 years) it shows when, So it must be in present perfect continuous (she has been woking at this office for 12 years). ?
@ellii10 ай бұрын
The present perfect doesn't show a specific time in the past like "yesterday," but it can show a continuing action (usually with the time markers "for," "since," and "all"). Both the present perfect and present perfect progressive/continuous can show past actions that continued to the present, and the difference is that the present perfect progressive emphasizes that the action will continue into the future. Find out more in our videos that compare the present perfect and present perfect progressive: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5vShnSphNNqY9Esi=bmMZt6g-IYgfxK_D and the present perfect and simple past: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKfapGR9p8Z1qs0si=EyVjejrZQWuiuSHZ It might help you to compare these three sentences: - She worked at this office from January 2012 to January 2024. (simple past; specific time) - She has worked at this office for 12 years. (present perfect; no specific end time; maybe she has finished working or maybe she will continue to work there) - She has been working at this office for 12 years. (present perfect progressive/continuous; no specific end time, she will continue to work there)
