What is the difference between TESOL and TEFL ?
@ESLTeacher36511 ай бұрын
TESOL when English is being taught to learners in a native speaking country like Australia. For example, Japanese students studying in Australia. TEFL is for teaching English in a non-native English speaking country. However, in terms of the certification, both are accepted, but you need to check with the individual brand to make sure it’s accredited.

Thank you for these videos! This is really helping me draw a clear path to how I want to achieve this dream. I do have some questions, though: 1) How does the job search look with no experience, no degree, and fresh out of a TEFL Certification Course? 2) In Canada, there is a Mature Student's status in our universities, which gives the chance for an applicant above the age of 19 to apply to their desired university if they have related experience in that field. I'm sure teaching English abroad serves as related experience to apply for a BA in English in any university, but is that experience valuable enough be able to work in countries that require a degree? Will I need to continue my education to do so?
@ESLTeacher3652 жыл бұрын
1 - you will have to search for jobs in countries that don’t require a degree. Latin America is the best region for this. I also recommend teaching online before you teach abroad to get some experience. 2 - countries that require a degree do so because of the visa. Even if you have experience teaching, you won’t be able to access these jobs without a degree so you’ll need to get qualified first. I hope this helps!

Hi Jamie, I'm also American-Australian! (Born in Australia but I have lived worked and studied in the US since a young age). A few questions - I have a TEFL certificate, a bachelors (and masters), but am having trouble finding a job. The main reason for this is MOST of the companies that offer certificates (TEFL etc.) offer job resources but the price of there certificates are quite high (to cover the cost of the job placement). Additionally, there are companies that you can pay to work or volunteer abroad but I don't necessarily believe in this approach. I was offered a job in Mexico at a private school that I unfortunately had to decline but otherwise its very hard finding a job on your own without paying a placement agency. When you say 500-1000 a month, that’s not much money. How many hours a day and how many days a week do you work?
@ESLTeacher3652 жыл бұрын
You have to consider the cost of living in the country. You can look at the website Numbeo to see the average cost of rent, food, utilities, etc and compare it to the salary. Higher paying jobs are usually reserved for teachers with a degree and/or teaching license (not just TEFL)

I’ve been told you need a degree for Italy, I am getting my TEFL and so is a friend and I have my degree but she doesn’t so we have been choosing Spain bc she’s never been to Europe and wants a friend present. Are you sure you don’t NEED a degree for Italy still?
@ESLTeacher365 Жыл бұрын
A degree is preferred. Italy is very challenging unless you have EU citizenship. If you want to teach in Italy as a non-EU citizen your only real option is getting a student visa and teaching in language academies part-time put to 20 hours per week. Spain is much easier to teach in with a degree because you can qualify for language assistant programs. Without a degree, it’s similar to Italy - you need a student visa and can teach in academies with a TEFL - but up to 30 hours per week.

IELTS is an exam that proves your English level. Depending on where you want to live, different countries require different exams. If you want to teach, you will also need a TEFL certificate.

Hi, are these countries open for non-native english teachers? I'm the Philippines 😁
@ESLTeacher3653 жыл бұрын
If you are a non-native speaker, it will be more difficult to find a job without a degree. I recommend taking an official English exam (like IETLS or Cambridge) to get your English level certified so you can present this to potential employers. You can work as a language assistant in Spain if you are from the Philippines through the Auxiliares de Conversacion program, but you might need at least an associate's degree for that.

Ive been to various TEFL websites browsing their job boards I've been to sites recommended by other you tubers talking about TEFL job sites. Nothing, not one damn job that doesn't require a bachelors. Cool to hear this information in this video, but if we have no idea where to go with ACTUAL job listings and opportunities, its absolutely pointless.

However, I have been facing rejection right away as soon I apply for a job in east asian nations. Any recommendations or suggestions would be highly appreciated.
@ESLTeacher3652 жыл бұрын
Hi Disha, I recommend getting your English level certified by an official exam like Cambridge or IELTS. Some countries consider Indians to be non-native speakers and are less likely to hire them because the visa process is more challenging. My advice is to make sure you are highly qualified and don’t give up! I have a blog post when I interviewed non-native speakers teaching abroad and they all mentioned that it’s best if you get an actual teaching license and to keep trying. Also reach out to other Indians teaching abroad to see if they have any advice for you!

You could potentially volunteer on a tourist visa, but you’d be paying a fee to do the volunteer program. There are teachers of all ages abroad. Some Asian countries tend to hire younger teachers but most other parts of the world don’t care or have a cut off around 55 or 60.
