ESM Typhoon No 2: Great Flight -- Bad Landing

This was the second flight of my electric conversion ESM Hawker Typhoon 1B. The terrible landing may have been the result of my thumb slipping off the control stick just as I was flaring -- or I was simply coming in too steeply, causing the bounce. Damage was relatively minor and should be fairly easy to repair (motor mount joints, spinner dents, cowl cracks around radiator intake). This ruined what had been, up to that point, a very successful second flight, with no trouble to report. I had been thinking of landing on the grass runway, and will definitely do so for flight no. 3.

To fast approach, twitchy on elevator (maybe a bit tail heavy), I fly BlackHorse Typhoon, ok saw PILOT ERROR 😔

Flaps?

I had around 45 degrees flaps on that landing (pause the video at the end when it's sitting on its nose and you can see). I still had too much "float" on the full flap setting (the slow pass prior to landing). I'm considering a setting with even more flap deflection to cut speed more and eliminate float. I'd already added down trim for that full flap setting, but evidently not enough.

Largish models and rigid wire stuts with rock hard tyres are not the best combo in the world for hard landings on bitumen. Fairly stingy on ESM's behalf not to provide decent oleo struts.

I cut down the springs so the struts would absorb impact (rather than "store energy" like pogo sticks), but the travel is on the order of a half inch; not much at all. I used wheels that are very light -- aluminum hubs, and sponge rubber tires. Not much shock absorption there -- but these have worked well on other large models I have. The runway is asphalt. I've fond that true rubber tired wheels weigh a ton, and don't wear all that well on our runway.
