Stefan, can you tell us glider pilots more about this. Why is JP doing this? Is he looking to explore night time wave? Does he have a particular goal in mind? What is involved here? I mean does he have an IFR rating? what are all the modifications to his glider? he was flying in controlled airspace does he have to keep the engine on while in controlled space? . . So many questions come to mind... How did he get initial training to be allowed to do this? Flying with night-vision goggles limits your vision scope .... . . . Details, details, detail PULEASE!!

Cool. Placing the engine near the tail and some sound dampening might be good. for proper jet flying it would need a different wing I assume. Little shorter and shallower. Not sure what kind of glide numbers you can get at high altitude and higher speed but 15:1 at 400km/h would be neat.

Please don´t install the jet more in direction to the tail. Then heat gets a real problem for the structure ;)

In the US yeah. Technically legal. Smart? Not without some extra training no haha

In US the glider license is a PPL with privileges to fly GLIDER category aircraft

I don´t know the exact regulations. JP also has a PPL with IFR rating, but I believe this is not required.

I personally don´t use speed to fly. Below the MC infobox you will get the specific speed for the MC value and for everything else I use the audio vario and intuition. Especially with faster gliders speed to fly would make you slow if you always pull up a lot at energy lines. At the new vario display, there will be speed to fly implemented and we will also try to get something implemented in XCSoar/OpenSoar.
