Due to numerous requests some pictures and video footage shot while designing and building my 3D printed Hookah diving rig eSnorkel70. It runs on 12 volts and is designed for shallow dives of up to 5 meters depth. The total weight is only 7.5 kg. Run-time per battery charge is 3-4 hours. The floating ring has a volume of 18 liters and is also used as a pressure reservoir which greatly improves breathing characteristics. The splash protected tube on top with the diving flag acts as an air intake and prevents any water from entering the system.
This prototype version was designed with priority on simplicity, lightness and long running time per single charge. Another limiting factor was my printer at the time which could only print up to a maximum length of 220mm. My current hardware has less limitations, so new versions with higher performance (greater depth and possibility to supply two divers at the same time) are under preparation.
-----------------------------------------
Items used:
Compressor: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DcY...
The model in this video is ACQ-903, which is the absolute minimum. For higher output, ACQ-906 or ACQ-908 can be used.
More powerful compressor for greater depths (Recommended version 2019!): s.click.aliexpress.com/e/gfBg98U (12 Volt version!)
IMPORTANT: When using this compressor, it will require a stronger pressure reservoir than the previous ones. The same kind of floating ring can only be used if it is additionally reinforced with glass- or carbon fiber! An overpressure valve MUST be used!
Regulator: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DCH...
Spiral hose 14x10mm: s.click.aliexpress.com/e/c5FbhZBK (mention hose color you want!)

I haven´t yet used it for building a new version, but having more power, the amout of heat it produces will also be somewhat higher. A strong enough constant airflow around the compressor is essential. Adding some fans with enough power and designing an efficient airflow path might be the way to go.

You can adjust it to fit the pressure of your compressor. Adjust it until it closes at exactly the maximum pressure that your compressor produces. No air is supposed to flow unless you inhale. I also changed the hose on the regulator for a wider one with 10mm inner diameter. It will improve breathing characteristics.

@e-mat6077
@e-mat6077 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on many variables like temperature and resistance. The deeper you go, the more resistance, the higher the current draw. It´s always better to be on the safe side. You need to do your own research and then add a sufficient safety margin. Even though Lipos have great capacity, they are not the safest option because their BMS will automatically cut off the power once the minimum voltage is reached, so you need to stay aware of your battery status at all times.

I'm a little confused with the max Presure indications for the compressor. For instance, the "recommended version 2019" compressor has a max pressure of 1.85bar (26.83 psi). Does that mean I cannot fill my PVC air reservoir to anything more than 1.85 bar? The PVC reservoir coild easily hold 150 psi safely, and the 2nd stage regulators are normally rated for 145~150 psi. Also, I see you did not include an Air Pressure Switch in the list of materials, does that mean the compressor has a built-in pressure switch to automatically turn off/on? Or are you just running the compressor non-stop until the battery dies?
@e-mat6077
@e-mat6077 4 жыл бұрын
You need to use a second stage especially adjusted for hookah diving. They run at much lower pressure than the ones used in regular scuba applications. Yes, it means your reservoir will be filled with the amount of pressure that the compressor is able to produce. Storing large amounts of air is not the idea of the reservoir, but to improve breathing comfort by buffering air for your next breath stroke while you are still exhaling from your previous one. That way, you can get away with a compressor about half the size that you would need without a buffer tank. With the setup used in this video (ACQ-903 compressor), adding a pressure switch wouldn´t make any sense because in actual use, the compressor needs to run constantly. You wouldn´t be able to switch it off for more than 1-2 breath strokes without drastically increased breathing resistance. Also, the compressor´s max pressure is way below what could cause structural harm to the buffer reservoir. However, the 2019 compressor recommendation is more powerful. I haven´t yet been able to test how much excess it would produce, but it´s possible that a pressure switch might make sense. An even better solution would be to have it run constantly but adjust its power based on how much pressure there is in the tank. That would require an additional control circuit. However, if you want to keep the setup as simple (and reliable) as possible, then an overpressure valve for simply venting any small amounts of excess air might be a good alternative.

@@en2oh That would require a more powerful compressor than the one used in this video (ACQ-903), which can theoretically provide 70l/min, but with zero counterpressure. That output will decrease drastically even at very shallow depths like 1 meter. That compressor is the absolute minimum to just barely sustain one diver and there´s absolutely no way you could use it for two. However, the next bigger models (ACQ-906, 908 or 910) should have enough power to supply two divers, but of course at the expense of maximum depth.

He great system. I'm planning to make a hookah diving rig my self. Im locking ad a compressor similar to yours but instead of 70L/min this one puts out 160L/m an has 0.02MPa more (i dont think that 0.02 is going to make any difference). The only thing I don't understand is how deep you can go on ... MPa, PSI or Bar. And would you recommend a small airtank Like your ring?
@e-mat6077
@e-mat6077 4 жыл бұрын
You need to look at the curves which show how much output in liters you will get at what pressure. For example, at 5 meters the compressor needs to overcome 0.5 bar of pressure, at 10 meters, it will be 1 bar. At the same time, the volume of the air that the compressor is able to supply, will be reduced by 1/3 at 5 meters and by half at 10 meters due to the surrounding pressure. One diver needs about 15-20 Liters of air (at depth) per minute, depending on physical activity and individual properties. So as an example, if you want to dive to 10 meters, it means that you would want a compressor that is able to supply 40 liters per minute against a pressure of 1 bar. By the time the air is pumped down to 10 meters, its volume will be reduced by half, so the diver will have 20 liters to breathe per minute. 160L/min might make it possible for you to supply two divers at the same time when at shallower depths. With only one diver, you will be able to go a bit deeper, but not not much more than with the smaller compressor. I can´t give you any precise calculations without seeing the exact specs and curves, but my guess is around 7-8 meters. A buffer tank is an absolute necessity. Without one, breathing comfort will be a lot worse and maximum diving depth will be greatly reduced.

I haven´t had any issues. It´s important that the comressor head with its cooling fins is exposed to the open air. The part of the compressor which is inside the enclosure is also surrounded by a constant airflow because all the air that the diver uses is sucked in through the snorkel and into the enclosure before it enters the compressor. So the air inside the enclosure is constantly changing and there is no heat buildup. The outer walls of the enclosure are also kept cool by the surrounding water.

Hi, thanks for your question. This was my personal proof-of-concept project and it works very well. And thanks for asking, I´m still very much alive. The 3d-files that I made are by no means on a fool-proof or plug-and-play level. Without solid background knowledge on diving safety and sufficient technical understanding, they wouldn´t be safe to use. Of course, there are also many people here who would posess the necessary know-how to build and use it safely - but there are also some others that don´t. If I made the plans public, I´d have no way of making sure that whoever decides to use them also has the necessary skills and knowledge to do it safely. There is a risk that someone might use the plans who really shouldn´t. If you go through this comment section, you will notice that some of the comments and questions here clearly indicate that there are also people interested in this project who lack even the most basic knowledge necessary to use such a device safely. I understand that this might be frustrating for those who could find the plans useful and would use them responsibly. On the other hand, those who do have the necessary knowledge and skills might find this info useful for making their own construction, even without any of my plans. After all, it´s a relatively simple device, but you have to understand what you are doing and be aware of all potential risks.

All the compressor links in the description are 12V, not 220V. The tubing was bought locally. The size I used is 14mm/10mm (outer/inner diameter). I updated the broken link to the regulator, it should work now.

@e-mat6077
@e-mat6077 3 жыл бұрын
The compressor you mentioned is very different from the one I used. The Einhell uses much higher pressure, but relatively low volume, so you would need to use a regulator with higher intermediate pressure setting. Also, I have no information about the internal structure of the compressor, so I cannot say whether the air it produces is clean enough (free of oil and particles) for breathing. If it uses pistons instead of membranes you need to expect some debris. You really need to do your own research.

No mold whatsoever. I live in a dry climate and always vent it thoroughly after use, store it indoors in a dry heated space and leave the hose connection open until the next use.

@@maxiheck8596 Hallo Max!
