My college roommate had one and I used to love messing with it; it was so much fun that sometime in the late 90s, I bought one used cheap just because I missed it. About five years ago, I went to an AES convention where Sequential founder Dave Smith was speaking; I brought one of its wooden side panels and he kindly autographed it for me.

I have one. The one oscillator per voice in polyphonic mode and the slow 4-bit envelopes don't really do it for me. It was designed to be a low end practice device.
@antigen43 жыл бұрын
if you think THAT one is underrated you need to try a multi trak!
@cortical18 ай бұрын
@@senorverde09 Not really. It was the first multi-timbral MIDI synth ever made. When it came out in 1984 there was much enthusiasm about it for this reason, combined with offering all the other features Espen showcases here (including a sequencer, 3 ADSR, 24 dB VCF, noise generator, LFO with different waveforms). Only in comparison later to other synths have people criticized its architecture, which is limited by comparison to later synths. It was designed to be affordable in 1984, but not just a "practice synth." It was state of the art in its moment. Many excellent and popular professional synths with only one oscillator per voice have been made. 11:45 This was also on the Prophet VS and was really cool. You can do it on the Sequencers of the Prophet-6 and OB6 but it's nicer on the arpeggiator because it's more spontaneous.
@drsamurai009Ай бұрын
@@davebellamy4867 Agreed... The Round-Robin voice playing effect of OB synths is very cool and has a certain organic quality when you play successive same-keyed notes and you get variations in filter and envelope responses, but on Sequential synths where like a Prophet 5, or playing the arpeggiator on this Six Trak using the same voice allows for a different dynamic playing. Because Sequential only voice steals when needed, it can actually be played, and sound like more that just it's limited voice count. The OB synths will always rob notes as it rotates thru it's 8 voices, but if you play arrangements that don't have too many notes, you can minimize or eliminate voice stealing and the synth can sound even bigger than it is on SCI gear.

I've had mine since '86, and I've never even thought about selling it! I've gone through a few keyboard synths, and I currently have 3 synth modules to complement my Six-Trak. I just bought an Arturia MiniBrute, and I love it so far, but nothing will ever replace the Six-Trak for my core sound. The complaints about it not being fat enough in poly mode - well, most of the time, I don't need anything fatter than what the Six-Trak provides in poly (the few times I do, a good chorus, reverb or EQ unit fattens it up easily), and it certainly doesn't need any help in glorious Unison and Stack modes! Also, "fatter" doesn't always mean "better." I've tried plenty of so-called "fatter" synths, but none of them sounded "better" than the Six-Trak. The MiniBrute offers different monophonic tones, but not necessarily better mono tones. And I don't care if the attack is allegedly not fast enough to get usable drum and/or percussion sounds out of the Six-Trak; it's a SYNTH, not a drum machine. I only buy synths and effects to complement the Six-Trak; NEVER to replace it!

Great video! Great stuff... After 9:40 you state, that the poly glide at higher amounts would be some... ahhhm, uncontrollable... In fact it just depends on the randomness, at which order the next (free one) of the six voices is grabbed for the next note by the controler. If the last note played by a voice x is nearby the next note the same voice x is taken for, even with higher values the glide wouldn't be that much. So the amount of this effect is finally a mix (summarized) by the value you choose and the randomness of the next voice choosen by the controler. :) Thank you for showing such a lot of amazing great analogue stuff!

That track sounded very, very much like a Tangerine track from the early 80:s! A good one at that too (they had too many long winding boring tracks on many of their albums intermixed with some real gems!). I actually think this one sounds better than the Rev 3 Prophet 5 to my ears. And it being multitimbral is very unique for an analogue Synth. Actually fantastic! Maybe it's closer to the Pro-1 in sound as you mentioned it was a mix between a Pro 5 and Pro 1. What is clearly evident to me from Uhe:s Repro1/Repro 5 is that I very much prefer the Pro-1:s much clearer in your face sound than the Pro-5. Uhe mentioned that in a thread that it had to do with how the summing/mixing was done for the Repro-5 (and the real Pro 5 I guess). Maybe that summing is problematic for virtual Synths. I mean, still the best emulations I think are for monosynths, maybe with the exception for Rolands own cloud Synths. Juno 106 at least sounds almost as good as the original (they really got the chorus right for it!) . But otherwize I think it really isn't there yet. Arturias attemptps to analogue Polys are simply jokes.

I don't have the DP/4 anymore. ;-)

Someday, we’ll see you doing that Kevin Bacon strut-jump-kick hair-flick-lip-pout “Flash dance” across frame.

Thank you Espen for the great video. It's always amazing to see how many synthesizers there were in the 80s that you didn't even know yourself. The six-track has a 4 octave keyboard but i was wondering if using higher octaves an external midi keyboard can be played via the six-track? Do they still work with your Yamaha REV 7 all EQ's? That is often a weak point with these devices.

Yes it will respond with a longer keyboard

Thank you for this great review. I wasn't aware of its sequencer, arp and multitimbral capacities, so far. I'm curious, how a minimal synth drum beat would sound on this one. Didn't you announce to come back to the effect sound design later? Great track also...

Thanks! It's very capable of making analog drum sounds. I had to cut down the video as it was getting longer and longer. ;-)

Very nice tune!! I almost bought one of these in summer 1984 but my best friend at the time talked me into getting a Korg Poly 800. In hindsight I wish I had gotten the Six Track. But I was 19 at the time. What did I know?
@EspenKraft4 жыл бұрын
Cheers! The Poly-800 is great as well, but a totally different synth in almost every way. ;-)

Ha! I did the opposite! I got the Six Trak in 84. Still have it today. My friend got the poly 800.

@@danielpirone8028 I ended up trading the Poly 800 for a Poly 61 in 1986. I sold the Poly 61 and bought a 35mm SLR camera then joined the Navy. Still have the camera. In 1993 I came across a Poly 61 for $75 USD New in box. Still have it. Came across a Poly 800 MkII in 2014 for $40 USD. Still have it! Now if I come across a Six Track I will get it! ;-) I need to do a video on the Poly 61 and post it. It's a really fat synth that's and overlooked Gem in my book. Layer it in chord memory and it will do some wicked filter sweeps!!

Twenty years ago, circa 2003? The 6-Trak was widely available on eBay for $200. Passionate and lengthy were the online quarrels back then pro and con. Of course I wish I had bought one then at that price. But? Of course when the eBay selling price doubled, quadrupled -- in my financial circumstances I would have had to sell it. ... Luckily, I got my hands on a Sequential Circuits MAX for just under $100. Yes, and no: no onboard controls. The MAX is one of those rare synths that you just have to hold on to! (Same or similar innards as 6-Trak! Only thing: designed as a "computer peripheral" you either need a Commodore 64, or an external control using something called MIDI).
