I think its ridiculous that ppl hated that she won this award. this is the first time in so long that a real musician who makes real music wins this award. New generation ppl dont understand that and only want to listen to horrible shit they hear on the radio and thinks thats music. I am not proud that I am in this generation but at least I have a lot of music sense

Incredibly talented girl. I'm so glad that she won best new artist, because she may not have had the most records or sales, but the quality of her music is better than anything on the radio. Honestly though, I only heard of her because of everyone freaking out over her winning. I'm so glad it happened. My laundry playlist has never been so relaxing

I had never heard of this woman until yesterday. When they announced her as a the Best New Artist, my thoughts were: 1. "Who the hell...?" 2. "She's cute. I love her hair" 3. "Wow! She's very classy" 4." I should go to youtube and check her out." Well, here I am. I've watched a couple of her videos, and now I'm a new fan. Last night's show wasn't a TOTAL waste of time after all.

I hope all of you see that Esperanza Spalding is amazing, but she is not the only one. I encourage all of you to PLEASE open yourself up to the jazz world. As you can see from Esperanza's example, most people who are exposed to the GOOD jazz (NOT Kenny G!) DO like it. and while I acknowledge the fact that jazz isn't considered "mainstream music" (which I don't think it ever will be), I believe that in this decade it does not get nearly as much recognition as it should get. Congrats Esperanza!

BRAVA ESPERANZA SPALDING! I'm glad that the Grammys did something right this year. FINALLY, someone who has raw, pure talent. Someone who sings beautifully NATURALLY, and knows how to really play the beautiful double bass (it's not everyday where you see a woman who plays the double bass). For those who say she doesn't deserve to win the Grammys.... please stop & think: natural singing voice + playing double bass v.s. computerized, auto-tuned flashy voice/noise? REALLY. Esperanza - HUMBLE.

@CutieWithADream Honey, The Grammy's are not the VMA's. They're about actual musical talent. This girl is a very real talent, much more mature as a singer and an overall act. She deserved to win. When your hormones die down and you look beyond your obsession and learn more about what good music is, her win will make more sense to you.

@niceme54 Well written! I have 20+ yr. old twin girls, & a 14 yr. old son whom, just like their Mom, have been surrounded by a variety of great artist all of their lives, and they too know the meaning of good music. I celebrate both, Ms. Spalding & Justin Bieber, as they are both deserving of any and all rewards & recongnition! During a visit (last summer), my daughter & I viewed Ms. Spalding's performances on KZbin & we were blown away...& so was my 14 year old ~

@gingerakeller You fail to realize that Esperanza won her Grammy because of her musical talent, the award was not given to her based on popularity but for her artistry as a musician. You say no one knew who she was? I knew of her since she released her first album Junjo in 2006. Yes she doesn't have as much exposure, and while you see this as a point to your argument, I see this as unfortunate. Many hold the spotlight while more deserving are unheard. But today was HER well DESERVED night :)

@manguera9 - I See that you're an "old school" Jazz person whereas I'm more "new school" with a love of the old greats like Coltrane, Monk, Dizzy Gillespie etc. You have your opinion & I have mine. I think she is a fine Jazz bassist (as you u said) as well as a good writer & composer. Perhaps her style may not suit your tastes, but I would not discredit her as both a good singer & composer. But hey, you have your opinion & I can appreciate it.

@RaynaKapek - In a year Jazz music listeners & music appreciators WILL remember her. She's been around for the last 4 years. I have all 3 of her albums. So by you saying "Nobody will remember her"...well you'll be wrong. The people that won't remember her will be the people who follow & wait for mainstream radio & video to tell them what & who is cool. But music fans that expand their musical horizons & music fans in the Jazz community will always remember her & support her.
