I have been a lifelong baseball fan and a lover of its history, and it wasn't until some baseball video games started featuring Buck O'Neil did I learn about the rich history and amazing stories from the Negro Leagues. People remember Jackie Robinson, but they don't remember that Larry Doby, who broke the color barrier in the American League with Cleveland and Satchel Paige provided an almost immediate impact, helping Cleveland win the World Series in 1948. My heart is absolutely full that great players like Josh Gibson, who had such ridiculous numbers that his single season marks outpaced a fully juiced Barry Bonds, will be remembered as the greats they absolutely were. Changing the record books in any sport is such a monumental thing, but to do it in baseball, where people are so protective of the history and the purity of it, it's insane. Thank you for educating people with your conversation on why this is such a great thing for baseball to do, and why it's long overdue.

This incorporation of Negro League stats by MLB is the right thing to do but it also restores a bit of faith for me, in humanity. The hallowed structure of baseball and it's records mean so much to baseball fans. I remember being 10 years old in 1984 and knowing the stats on the back of baseball cards for whole teams. The injustices players of color faced, especially, exclusion always left a cloud whenever I thought of race in the game. The rules to not allow players of color into professional organized white baseball robbed baseball fans for over sixty years of seeing generations of all time great players. Imagine if Josh Gibson played on the Browns, or Giants? Surely, their respective success on the field, strictly in a baseball sense, would have been certainly more evident. Baseball is the greatest of all sports, to me. It was passed down from my dad, as it was, down from his father before him. I just wish that our politicians could put aside their differences for the betterment of the people. Thank you baseball, for this.

Josh Gibson was an amazing baseball player... PERIOD. I don't think the MLB should be incorporating the negro league stats into its recorders. For better or worse they were two completely separate leagues. This reminds me of when the NBA and ABA merged. It was decided then they would not count ABA stats in the NBA record books. The decision wasn't because they felt the ABA players were 'lesser players' but they were two completely different leagues. That it wouldn't be fair for either league to be able to mix stats when the overwhelming vast amounts of players did not play in each league. We might as well say that collegiate stats should be included in professional sports. Again, Josh Gibson was an amazing baseball player but he played in a completely different league. Who knows of Ty Cobb would have had an even better average, or if Babe Ruth would have an even better percentage. It's unknowable... Doing this invalidates a vast amount of records and stats of the past.

So I assume you’re in favor of separating American and National league records, and then adding a third also separate category for when interleague games became more common? MLB is basically saying they’re curating stats for ALL of the top level of American professional baseball, and the Negro Leagues were exactly that in every way except for the support they received from the powers that be. In other words, the Negro Leagues were a MAJOR league. The rules were the same.

While I'm happy we're acknowledging these stats, there are 2 issues that come from this: 1) The Negro Leagues didn't play a lot of games in a season. Putting Josh Gibson as the all-time leader in career Batting Average, Slugging Percentage, and OPS (along with single-season SLG and OPS records) while only playing in 602 career games overshadows the accomplishments of those who had to sustain their averages over 4x or even 5x as many games (Babe Ruth over 2,500 games played... Ty Cob over 3,000). Gibson played over 50 games in a season only 3 times (69 was his most), so while he was unquestionably the greatest Negro Leagues player of all time and put up otherworldly numbers, he never had to play so many games each year that he could wear down. If he had to play 150+ games a season (as a catcher, no less!), he'd still be one of the best players ever, but I don't think the numbers would be video-game like. 2) Many professional players and historians will tell you that Japan's professional league is equivalent to the Negro Leagues in terms of overall talent, so if we're going to recognize Gibson for his accomplishments, then Sadaharu Oh's 868 career home runs should be #1, along with his Top 5 placements in Runs, RBI, and Walks.

This is my counter argument. MJ only played 15 but is still looked at as better then LBJ even those LBJ is has been better longer then he has
The Major Leagues could have solved this problem by not segregating. I'm not really that concerned with fairness for Ty Cobb compared to Gibson or the other black players who weren't allowed to play in the other leagues. We also acknowledge tons of other leagues as major leagues and their stats count as well, like the Union Association or the Player's League. I never hear anyone complain about those stats being included in the official records. Comparing stats from all of these very different eras of baseball is kind of silly to begin with. These players were some of the best in existence at the time and they were playing in the only leagues they were allowed to play in.

The logical argument is this: it’s an MLB record and he didn’t play in the MLB. If they want to adjust and add to a professional baseball list, then certainly put him on top in all these categories. But how can you put someone on a major league “MLB” list specific to the MLB?
@2ndstreetmedia1717 ай бұрын
The negro league was way more talented. They were neglected for the color of their skin. No difference in all the other sports. It's common sense at this point. If you take away all black players from sports, sports wouldn't matter anymore

About time for these great athletes.
@chrisclark27477 ай бұрын
This is great. The one issue I'd note upon initial review is that the number of games played in a Negro League season (and career) is far fewer than MLB. In 1943, Josh Gibson hit .466 for the season which spanned 69 games and 302 plate appearances. In 1941, Ted Williams hit .406 for the season which spanned 143 games and 606 plate appearances. Josh Gibson had a career OPS of 1.176 across 602 games and 2,526 plate appearances. Babe Ruth had a career OPS of 1.164 across 2,503 games and 10,628 plate appearances. I'm not saying that Josh Gibson wasn't as good as Babe Ruth or Ted Williams- he probably was- but his achievements are not the same as those achievements made over the duration of an MLB season or career.
@jefflewis47 ай бұрын
I don't really buy that. If a player can hit 466 in 302 plate appearances he likely can do it in 606 plate appearances. Williams was hitting .405 at the halfway point of the 1941 season. He just kept doing in the 2nd half what he did in the first half. Why would Gibson not have been able to do the same ? I don't know if Gibson would have hit .466 (or even 400) in the major leagues, but I do believe if Gibson was able to hit .400 in 300 MLB at bats, he'd be able to hit .400 in in 600 MLB at bats.
@CarlKarnak7 ай бұрын
@@jefflewis4 There is zero way to prove this. Zero. It's absolutely implausible that any player especially a right handed hitter would bat 60 points over 400 in a full MLB season. Since 1900, There have only been 8 total 400 hitters in MLB. Only one did it more than once--Cobb. Since 1941. Nobody has had one. Tony Gwynn has the highest BA for anybody that started their career after WW2 and he was primarily a contact hitter. Gibson would have had to cut way down on his swing to even approach 400. Gibson was obviously an all time talent and if healthy would have been a great HOF MLB player based on evidence. However it's impossible to compare scenarios based on how the leagues operated, kept records and quality control of the game.

Ty Cobb is still the all time leading hitter. Josh Gibson is not the all time leader in any rate stats because he didn't have enough plate appearances in his career. He only had 2526 career PA's which doesn't meet the minimum 3000. Go take a look at baseball-reference. To put that number of plate appearances in perspective, Ichiro had 2722 AT BATS in his first 4 seasons, with 2953 PA's. The all time MLB batting leader should need more than 3.5 seasons' worth of plate appearances.
