Hagler won that fight vs Leonard. Duran probably would have beaten Leonard in the rematch if he wasn’t rushed into it. He had been partying hard after the first fight and Leonard’s team knew this so pushed for the date of the fight to be sooner. Duran wasn’t in 100% shape for that rematch.

@@GoGetYourShineboxPutting excuses to one side, Leonard was a very skilful fighter. Blessed with good footwork, lightning hand speed and fast reflexes. As much as I respect Hagler and Duran, Leonard had the advantage in speed and that's why he beat them. Angelo Dundee created a legend.
@haroldmccoy6580
@haroldmccoy6580 3 жыл бұрын
@@GoGetYourShinebox I respectfully disagree my fellow boxing fan ,in fact I mention the original encounter to validate a objective point . Many felt including Angelo Dundee that despite Leonard opening up the first match by fighting a emotional driven ,irrational bad tactic style ,against Duran that Leonard had eventually closed the Gap and had pulled off the match , barely ,but Duran captured the optic from the judges and many fans because he being the underdog and a legend also actually forced leonard into a tight , competitive fight in which Duran hurt the percieved Golden boy .Like the first Ali vs Frazier scenario there was no way the judges were going to annoit Duran the loser after he demonstrated the great icon was vulnerable ,could be hurt ,turned the match into a close contest ,Duran appeased the visual appetite of the judges with his early successful agression, while Leonard objectively speaking actually settled down to box instead of fighting , and began to dictate the course of action at certain stages of the bout .It was close ,but close typically goes to the champ, especially a made man, corporations endorsement machine icon like Leonard .Now in terms of the emmediate rematch ,Leonard's style was tailor made to confuse and defeat Duran regardless of the timing of the match ,Duran simply couldn't catch him ,and Leonard's explosive hand speed firmly cemented the styles terrible ,humbling mismatch .Even Bemitez who beat Duran with elite quickness and hand speed bothered and confused him. Leonard didn't allow himself to be suckered emotionally into fighting a inthe trenches war with Duran again, who was a astute legendary Craftsman at close encounters fighting .The very second Leonard opened up with his allusive Bob and weave tactic the rematch was essentially over with ,styles dictate who is a bad matchup against another style ,it took Duran to fight a obsolutely perfect fight in the first bout ,a psychological war that Duran being the willy veteran suckered Leonard into prefight by being utterly disrespectful to Leonard verbally,even blowing a kiss at Leonard's then wife .That mind game didn't have any effect thus once the ink dried on the contract for the rematch it was already a done deal ,Duran could have fought Leonard with a year to get in shape and he was going to get dominated ,his weakness once he moved up in weight classes was mobile ,quick ,fast hand slick boxers ie Leonard ,Benitez , even Tommy Hearns was in all actuality at that time a mobile fighter , with quick hands , especially a jab, but with crushing knockout power . The mobile quick hand guys were a obsolute terrible matchup for Duran ,it's the reason his bout with Marvelous Marvin Hagler was so competitive ,Hagler came right at Duran to engage in close proximity combat ,Hagler inthe end had too much hand arsenal ,power and hand quickness ,for Duran to substain being effective enough to win .Hagler stopped trying to outbox Duran and just said go and out punch him ,but Haglers style created a great match for Duran based on Durans strengths .The Leonard rematch was going to end in a bad way for Duran no matter what moment it transpired .

Heartfelt comments...he dominated the middleweight division at a time of more hall of fame middleweights than any other era. What stood out for me is that he did something no boxer or mma guy has done since...he would switch from left handed stance to right handed stance constantly...a pure genius of boxing.

When a sports person becomes a legend whilst they are still in the midst of their career you know that they are special. Marvelous Marvin Hagler earned the middleweight title every time he stepped in the ring. There were no easy fights, he took on the hardest challenges and the best opponents in an era stacked with top talent and boxers with their own claims to greatness. The first boxing match I can remember is Minter vs Hagler, I was only ten and from the UK, but you could see Hagler was a different class altogether. A very sad loss of a truly great man and undisputed champion.

technically , point wise Leonard won the the boxing match, but leonard didnt win the fight. And a Great Champion should never lose his belts to a man who didnt come to fight. Not at one point during the fight did you think that leonard was trying to make a statement that he was a better boxer or fighter. Leonard looked like he was trying to just go for a points victory and stay out of harms way. And that was surprising coming from a great fighter like Leonard who, in almost of his fights in his prime , clearly established that he was the dominant fighter by the end of the fight. I wish Sugar Ray's eye would've never suffered that damage, and I understand he fought that way to avoid more damage to the eye, but judges shouldnt have taken Marvin's title like that.
