He isn’t that good, he’s slow, he isn’t strong, his athleticism is questionable, his basketball IQ isn’t above average, mechanics are terrible, he simply isn’t that great. These Ball kids seem entitled, not very hard workers, cocky and like the league owes them. He is in for a rude awakening.

LaMelo has scary potential. Each one of his flaws can easily be fixed in ~2 to 3 seasons. The problem is, 1. Will he have the right coach as stated in the video and 2. How bad does he want to be great? Anybody can say they want to be great but they don’t put in the necessary work to reach that status. I have hope that he can be special but his nonchalant mindset will hinder him if he doesn’t change it

@@spirjrg216 Lukas case is different but even then averaging 3/9 from 3 isnt that good no matter how you spin it. Hes justified in shooting that many 3's because that's how his offense is ran and he doesnt have many threats around him if he had a more reliable shooter than THJ at the 2 I'd say he'd shoot around 37-39%. I'm a huge Melo fan and have watched most of his games since his freshman year at Chino Hills and my opinion is this: Pros: - amazing court vision - amazing instincts on defense - although defense is optional for him, you can tell he can play great defense if he tried - great rebounder - can make every pass - has a sweet touch on his shot (i.e. I believe can become a good shooter) - plays at an amazing and controlled fast pace...I believe a team can only realize the full potential of melo if they build around him Cons: - poor shooter and has bad form, his entire mechanics from the feet up needs work - doesn't take things seriously and does not possess any of the leadership abilities required to be a floor general - lavar still controls part of his life and does not surround melo with the right people (Unfortunately, it looks like lavar still runs part of his life. His HS coach at spire Jermaine Jackson quit his job just to be melo's personal trainer. While a great guy, I haven't seen melo improve one bit since working with Jermaine and their workouts are a joke. It looks like he'll be around for the long haul - lavar must have provided some incentives for him to just quit his job and move with melo to australia and then back here in the states in detroit. I promise I am not hating and this point is CRUCIAL and cannot be overlooked. Melo needs to surround himself with NBA trainers and someone to help him work on his body. At the very least, this will fix his shot.) - poor decision making - doesn't understand the cost of random bad plays and unnecessarily long 3s (in the nba, EVERY possession matters) - unathletic Comparison to Tyrese Haliburton (ESPN projected #8 pick): - Tyrese has a weird shot, but shot 50% FG, 42% from 3, 82% FT his most recent year of college, Melo is a career mid 20's% from 3 - Tyrese is a leader on the court, I'm not convinced that Melo will ever become a "floor general" and leader of an nba team - Both are not athletic and possess a wiry frame - Both are good rebounders for their size Overall, I don't see how anyone can take Melo ahead of Tyrese. The most damning thing is that Melo acts like he's just another guy on the team. If you're going to get drafted and paid like a franchise player, you better be the captain and leader as well, or no one will respect you. Melo is going to be a big project for a team taking him on and has many things that need to be fixed else he'll just be another non-contributor on offense and liability on defense. If he does one day realize his full potential, I believe it will take years for him to get there. Even if he goes to a perfect situation, think about how long it will take for him to 1.) completely transform his shot 2.) develop the personality to be the leader of a team 3.) remove all the bad tendencies from his game - the ones he has been used to playing with, his entire life. Is it really worth the risk to take Melo, knowing that by the time he fixes his flaws, he might be nearly done with his rookie contract + QO year. Unless the Knicks or Lonzo's eventual team drafts him, are they sure he will stay? If Lavar or his representation by then try to force a move for Melo to go to a team in a bigger market, isn't all the work the team that drafts Melo, gone to waste?

One thing that people don’t understand is from the clips above you see that majority of Melo’s plays are completely natural and he rarely ever uses strategic plays true to the book. Due to this he gets himself in a lot of boneheaded situations and is prone to making terrible shot creating decisions, however the fact that he is this creative, has a feel for the 3 point line and is not afraid to shoot means that once he learns to play by the book he’ll be an even more dangerous player. Melo truly needs a coach that will push him in all categories because he has the talent and metrics to be a generational talent. Honestly most of Melo’s downsides are mental: -Defensive drive(he has defensive capabilities and is good at reading defenses but does he have the drive to follow through) -Poor shot selection(this is something most guards struggle with but Melo is number 1 on that list in this draft, dude just be shooting to shoot sometimes like his shot percentages should be 35-45% from three but it’s lower because he thinks he Larry Bird) -Boneheaded shot creating(at times Melo plays like James Harden when he doesn’t even have the experience or skill to warrant him playing like that, he should rely on his team mates, off the ball movement, and offensive playbook as well as work on his fundamentals before he starts acting like Dame Dolla). Basically he needs a coach that will bench him when he tries to plays like he has a super max contract. Basically he plays “hero ball” wayyyyy too much. Melo is a cocky and confident in his abilities, which is a good trait to have when you have the abilities to back them up, but once he works out his shooting form and LEARNS how to play the game by the book he’ll be a monster but until then what I’m trying to see from Melo this season is him working scoring through the post, he is long and shifty enough to get fouls and and ones as well as open up defenses. He should only shoot three’s when he’s open, I literally am not looking for Lonzo 2.0 from 3. Look at Zo now, his 3 point percentage is high because he only shoots good shots. I don’t want him coming in the league like Trae Young I want him to come in like Lonzo(before the bubble) who can actually score from the paint and make free throws consistently.
