@@SmashKing17 Cousy would need to improve his skill set though, not saying he can't but Cousy skill set that we have on camera, is CLEARLY not good enough to play in current era. CP3 has a far superior skillset to anybody who played in Cousy's day. Comparing based off peers is just dumb. Need to compare off skillset. Magic and Larry for instance are CLEARLY skilled enough to be dominate in modern era. Same with MJ, Oscar, Kareem, Gervin, Dr J, McAdoo --- Those guys had the skillset where its beyond obvious it would be a seamless transition in any era. Guys like Cousy and Sam Jones and Tommy H and other HOF players from the 50s and 60s, did not have a skillset that translates. That'd be like comparing a Web Programmer from 1992 to a Web Programmer from 2022. The 1992 guy was good for the time but would need massive evolution to be up to speed with current guys. Cousy was good at 60s basketball. CP3 is just good at basketball. Jerry West was just good at basketball, he had immense skill. Cousy was not skilled lol

Can`t challenge anyone on eras that`s why these debates always end up being two people yelling their opinions at one another. If one person has made up their mind that x era was the best then there`s nothing anyone can say to change that. This conversation here. Bob Cousy changed the game... Curly Neal was just as popular as Cousy at that time and he played with the Globetrotters... Today`s fan and apparently broadcasters don`t realize how big the Globetrotter at that time. They sold out arenas all over the world and Curly was the show. In terms of NBA players it wasn`t until the 70`s when guys like Pistol Pete, Earl Monroe, Tiny Archibald, etc really started bringing in what today`s fan would recognize as NBA footwork and ball handling. Mad Dog is wrong here on many fronts but so is JJ. He said the 80`s which is a few years off. Around the time of the merger is when you can pin point the start of modern NBA basketball and basketball players.

Mad Dog goes by accomplishments only and not eye test. Anybody who understands basketball will tell you CP3 is a better player than Cousy. That's just beyond obvious. Magic would be a transcendent talent from the 50s-2020s. Same with guys like Curry and CP3, they are just so good at basketball that you drop them into any league era and they are great instantly. Cousy is only great in one era of basketball. He would need to be a completely different player to play in other eras. Jerry West would be great anytime from 50s to now but not Bob Cousy lol.. Cousy is not on Jerry West level, guys like Russo are just spreading misinformation to new generations lol. You want to harp on old school greats, talk about West, Oscar, Bill, Wilt, McAdoo, Kareem.... But when you start preaching Cousy its safe to assume: The person preaching is an old white guy from the east coast. I had a co-worker that was convinced Jerry Rice wasn't best WR ever, its the slow little white dude who played for the packers when there were like 5 teams. Racists refuse to acknowledge that the first to do something isn't the best. In fact more times then not, people get better at things as time goes on.

I think “analysts” and commentators lose their credibility when they show favoritism towards one era of any sport. If you can’t say that Chris Paul is one of the greatest PGs of all time; you don’t know what you’re talking about. A great player is someone that could play in any era of the sport; CP3 has the old school toughness balanced with the modern high percentage shooting ability. It’s either a back in the day argument or recency bias stance. You have to evaluate every factor of competition/rules in each era and take that into consideration. Rules did not benefit scorers in older eras as much as they do now. Sometimes it means records held in those older eras are more impressive, sometimes it doesn’t. There are amazing players in all eras of the NBA - it’s so exhausting that we can’t just appreciate greatness and leave it at that.

@@QankoIvanov you do understand he was speaking about the guys Cousy played against? Like the others. Which a lot of those guy weren’t getting paid enough to only play in the NBA/ABA so they literally were firemen, plumber, etc. He has said on numerous occasions his respect for the older players but they aren’t competing with the athletes today. Dudes didn’t even use their left hand. Which is fine for their time but in comparison to today it’s not close. There are a few exceptions to the rule and wily is definitely one of them. Bill russel wouldn’t win anywhere close to the amount he did (11 rings sheesh) with the limited talent and teams back in his day. @@tonysopranooo1 That's not really an apt comparison. The real comparison would be comparing Einstein's knowledge of physics to a modern day physicist at the top of his field. Obviously a modern day physicist knows a lot more about how the universe works than Einstein did. They have a lot more information and they're able to expand on Einstein's ideas as well as all the other scientists in the last 70 years. Likewise, CP3 is a much better basketball player than Cousy ever was because there's a lot more infrastructure to become better, a lot more people play, and the game has evolved leaps and bounds in recent decades. That's all Redick was pointing out, which is why he said you can't compare people pre-1980 to the modern game.

@@hitman321100 Having access to better equipment produced better basketball players. If you wanna do the “If Bob Cousy had a Tesla…” argument, I’m all for doing that. I’m just letting you know that being able to dribble with both hands was a STANDARD in any era of basketball, despite whether you were wearing Chuck’s or Kobe’s.

@@deeegeeekay First if JJ Reddick is lying, Bob Cousey could dribble with his left. The biggest part people are missing is you couldn't even palm the ball. You know how hard it is to dribble without palming the ball? Also taking 2 steps was considered a travel back then.

@@hitman321100 Didn’t ask about past NBA rules, stop leading away from the initial argument. I’ve met 12 year olds with better handles than Bob Cousy bro, get out of the past and go to your local park.

It's sad how players continue to load manage and they still get injured! While Jordan had 9 82-game seasons and 11 out of 15 playing over 80. And that was a more physical era where the league didn't protect their players like they do now.
