It depends on the angle or area of the court he has the ball... If he is anywhere above the wings (free-throw line extended) you'd want to force him left because if he's dribbling with his right hand he can use his step back. Think about It, Harden only really only uses a step back going to his right, just like Steph uses his step back going to his left (opposite shooting hand). These two of the most skilled players in the league, most of the time it won't matter how you defend them because they will get their shot off, you're just trying not to make it to easy for them. Steph isn't a bad defender and he isn't great... his problems is mainly he has no physical advantages (size or athleticism) and sometimes he's a bit overly aggressive on the ball (inconsistent with his discipline).

Specially being undersized and Harden is one of the most unguardable players in the league. Raymond Sid Hernandez defense isn’t about how much a player scores on you. It’s about your ability to stay in position between the rim and the ball handler as well as being able to contest if need be. Curry has quick hands but sloppy defensive footwork. He also expects his team to pick up and rotate instead of trying to stay in good position. These are the reasons he struggles on defense... his defensive stats are good due only to his excessive reaching instead of focusing on preventing the player from getting by him

But you could also see that Looney, a great defender also get lost on footwork against these ISO players. NBA now with the no hand check rule, ISO is the best scoring option. I think the strategy of GSW is to let James play isolation game with out any help defense because if they come for help defense leaving the perimeter shooter open he will kickout or lob the ball so perfectly which can lead a lot of Houston's best shooters to get involved and big men like capela would gain confidence and become comfortable in the paint. That would take literally no time to takeaway the game from GSW. I think Curry has his own strategy by not giving James any room to shoot over him because it's better to stay close to him rather than giving him space to shoot. As we all know, if James Harden gets comfortable beyond the 3 point arc he even make well contested shots look easy and deliver in the clutch time too. Most important thing is GSW is limiting them as much as possible to play as a team because to stop a team like Houston with great shooters the opponents definitely should concentrate on limiting the passes and touches.
