The only thing you can blame Southgate for is not taking players that can put their foot on the ball and keep it. His issue was that these are not great players (Wilshire, Shelvey), but still, this was exactly the game you put one of those players on the pitch. Croatia played very well and deserved to win. They are a class team. I hope they go on to win the whole thing. They have the best midfield in the whole tournament. I am proud of this England team. It is the first time I can remember in my lifetime I can remember looking forward to watching the England team. This is an England team that has an exciting future. The reason Russia played better was because Croatia were expecting them to be very defensive, given that they played 5-3-2 against Spain. Therefore Croatia were pressing too high and Russia, who were just as attacking as in the 2 or 3 games caught Croatia out especially with that first goal. With England, Croatia knew they would be attacking and therefore tightened up at the back. Now I would like to have seen a better plan for Modric and Rakitic but yeah

Imagine if a team like Brazil played France in the semi final and started 3 holding midfielders (including 4 defenders) even tho they have a tremendous squad, but just sat at the back and lobed the ball to Neymar and Gabriel when they had the chance, yet won on a set piece. You’d be pissed. A wins a win but from a watchers view, how awful in terms of quality. The way they’ve approached the tournament is not on par to what their players are capable of and neither to that of Croatia, who has tirelessly TRIED to play the ball even if it took them to extra times. You don’t see Belgium sit at the back. I’m judging off the football I see, and I’m disappointed France didn’t come out stronger, cause they should have been from the start of the tournament. They don’t have a weak team to be acting like that. To most surprise, Croatia’s in the final, and have made it there admirably since they don’t have the OVERALL quality that the other semifinalists have like England full of EPL players (supposedly the best league), France (there is no arguing there of their players talent) and Belgium who have a golden generation with most players coming again form the EPL. They both deserve to be in the final, they’ve made it there, but I think Croatia should (not deserves to) be Champion.
