One change to satisfy defensive players being overlooked is to give 4 Ballons d'Or per year - each for Goalkeeper, Defender, Midfielder and Forward. Think about it, at the Oscars they dont just have ONE acting category becuase otherwise it would usually be the leading man that wins. I think the rules should be balanced for all. Each player position should have it's own set of rules which accumulates stats with equivalent points. There should be more focus on individual achievement than team achievement since that rules out players in disadvantaged teams.

that makes no sense. A part of being a best player is that you play well, even in bad team. This is the best player, not most stats. If you want to win based on stats, play fantasy football. what you are proposing basically will incentivize players to accumulate points for their own individual gains instead of playing for the collective. The criteria right now makes sense: Individual achievement + team trophies = award. Tie breaker would be Off-field shenanigans, personal bias, career consistency, etc. Nobody would give Messi the Ballon D'or after Barca lost 8-2. Diego Milito won 5 trophies with Inter in 2010 (Seria A, Copa Italia, UCL, Club World Cup and Super Copa) . He was arguably their best and most important player during the 2009/10 season. I don't like the ballon d'or. It is unfair to single out a single player, especially with attackers getting the limelight with football being a low scoring sport. Awards should end at World 11, in a 4-2-3-1, a goalkeeper, two centre backs, two full backs, two midfielders, a playmaker/second striker, two wingers and a striker. If people really want a ballon d'or replacement as an award to give to a single player, make it for breakthroughs, where the criteria is for a player to outdo anything he had done previously. Jorginho this season, Bruno Fernandes in his arrival at Man U, Tadic in 2019, Salah 2018, etc. Revelation of the season or something, for players who stepped up. Trophies can influence these awards, stats can influence them, whatever. Here is how you fix it. You create awards for best gk, defender, midfielder and forward and then have those 4 compete for the top prize. This for me is the best way to change it and make it a award other positions then just cfs can win.

But in general forward players are much more highly skilled in several aspects of football than defensive players. No defensive player starts out as a defensive player. They all start out as strikers and gradually get moved to the back. Seems pretty justified to me that forward players should have more scope for individual glory that defensive players. GKs are a different breed though.
