It seems they don't really know how the seeding for the next years UCL actually works. Yes, there will be seeding by dividing the 36 teams into 4 pots, but then each team plays 2 from each of the 4 pots. That's the league part of the game. The knockout-rounds are "seeded" in that they are determined based on how the teams performed in the league stage. Team ranked 1-8 will meet one of the teams advancing from the play-off between teams ranked 9-24 and the cup tree is known in advance. So teams ranked 1 and 2 in the league stage can't meet before a possible final, an no team ranked between 1 and 8 could face each other before a quarterfinal. In theory you reduce the chance of big teams meeting each other in early rounds, or cinderella-stories when a underdog goes far by "just" having an "easy draw" . But instead you get the luck effect by how the league stage turns out (and that in large part due to the luck of the draw among the teams drawn from pot 1 and 2). Suddenly City ends up #1 and Real Madrid end up #7 in the league stage and meet in a quarterfinal. The league draw is where the luck element will still play a big role. There is for example quite a difference in team A) drawing Liverpool and Real Madrid from pot 1, Atletico Madrid and Arsenal from pot 2, AC Milan and PSV from pot 3 and Marseille and Real Sociedad from pot 4 vs team B) drawing Man utd and Sevilla from pot 1, Shakhtar Donetsk and Salzburg from pot 2, Young Boys and Braga from pot 3 and Antwerp and Celtic from pot 4* Teams in the various pots are based on how they would have been seeded if this was introduced in the 23/24 season). If these example of draws where the case for team A) = Inter and team B) = PSG, you would expect team B to pick up significantly more points form their group.

This Arsenal side has a chance to write their own epic chapter in their club’s history. There’s gonna be a bunch of noise about Bayern beating them 10-2 years ago. Heck, I wanted Bayern for that very reason because that loss was my last memory of Arsenal in the UCL prior to this season. That shouldn’t matter to them. None of the current Arsenal players were on that team. The only one who may be intimately familiar with those matches is Arteta. This team showed a lot of moxie against Porto. Sometimes teams will play scrappy and force you to grind out a result. Arsenal showed they can do that. They’ve also shown since the turn of the new year that they can blow teams out of the water when firing on all cylinders. This could be the makings of a season for the ages well up there with the Invincibles, I would say better, if this Arsenal squad can win both the Premier League and the Champions League, which I suppose with the Community Shield would technically make a treble. Regardless, treble or not, winning a PL title and a UCL for the first time ever would be the coup de grace and essentially the coronation of Arsenal as a true world football powerhouse.

My issue with the current format is that you know some of the teams has got through to the quarter finals without a ball being kicked, UEFA should have scrapped the Knockout playoffs and last 16, so it still be 13 games, or only have a final and teams play 12 league games and top 2 play in the final, keeping it to 13.

If you look carefully at the Draw it feels like each team has to play their equal in terms of power.. almost. 1. Bayern are not better than Arsenal and even though Arsenal are slight favorites it's still a new thing for them so they're equal this time. 2. Real & City are considered the best. 3. One very important part of this drawing that I completely disagree is why the first team drawn in a pairing gets to play the first match at their home stadium. This is very, very wrong. The first team drawn should play away first so they play the more important second match at their home field. The wrong and unfair UEFA way is that the first team got penalized by being forced to play their first match at home and then play the more important and deciding match away which is at the second picked team home stadium. I found this selection very poor, very unfair and very wrong. What are your thoughts on my criticism? Thank you.

The cup tree is determined by how each team finish in the league stage of the new combinded league of all 36 teams. So the luck element is moved from draws in the KO rounds to the luck of the draw if oppositions in the league stage (2 drawn from each of the 4 seeding pots) and the luck of how a team end up in a combined league format. The difference in ending up in 3rd or 5th place could mean the difference in meeting Real Madrid in a quarterfinal or getting to a semi without facing any "heavy hitters". When each pot of 4 consist of 9 teams, there will be significant difference in how tough a draw could be. As you could draw both Man City and Real Madrid, but as likely could draw Man utd and Sevilla (all four teams would all be seeded in the same pot 1 if the format was introduced this season, along side PSG, Inter, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Liverpool* - Liverpool would have been the fifth team from Premier League to compete and be put in pot 1 ).
