The manager was Zidan, they did that because Zizu did his job and managed the team.

Even if Manchester United had their first eleven available, given what they and Ten Haag have served up, it's likely that they wouldn't be doing significantly better than they currently are.

Don't even try to compare the impact of Liverpool losing effectively their entire first team + bench players for parts of the season, versus Manchester United losing one or two 'decent but not great' players and a fair few 'average at best' players injured. Even if Manchester United had little to no injuries this season, given the general lack of quality of their players, other players looking like they can't be bothered (Rashford in particular), and Ten Haag looking clueless/talking a load of nonsense after dismal performances, it's quite probable that at best they would have made the Europa League and might have been close to challenging Aston Villa for the fourth CL spot.
