I agree with getting around the enemies flanks. In fact I had managed to get an encirclement created on a battle that I was losing. Only for the AI to break. My basic principles are as follows. 1. Don't fight any battles unless you have a minimum of 1.5 to 1 numbers, with a 2 to 1 or more being optimal. 2. A two lines front, with half the numbers of units in second rank with a higher ratio if you outnumber the Brits by more then 2 to 1. The second row should have your bayonets for counter charging, if the first rank gets charged. 3. Mass your artillery hub to hub in the center with a clear field of fire to their front. Place a second row of infantry or cavalry directly behind. After the Brits attacking your center get weakened and shaken by canister before the guns, release the second line of infantry to mop them up. Then push that infantry into the gap and rolling up each flank. With nothing left in the center the guns can now fire down the flanks in support. If you have managed to wrap around the flanks the encirclement of the flanks with units mopping up the center completes the shattering or surrender of each flank. 4. Enemy artillery: if you're face to face with artillery that just fired "shot" from a distance, you are not exhausted and you out number them, "CHARGE" before they can reload canister shot. Better yet have one unit remain at a distance to the front of their artillery long enough for a second unit to attack them from outside their arch. 5. After the enemy breaks, charge and run them down. Also remember you can use you General to shepherd routed units closer to your own. This requires micro management, but can remove a few more units from the game. 6. What ever you do, do not let your general come into contact with a retreating artillery unit, they will kill your general even when retreating. I have also seen them kill weaker infantry units too.

Massing up big bloob in charge is effective for the cost of your army but it´s no better then the doom staks from total war same cheese if you will. If you are playing the game and making use of the mechanics in the game you will find out that line infantry fighting with vanguard is even better in wining battles and keeping your troops alive. It´s not as fast but it is in the spirit of the era.

I can’t tell you how excited I am for this game and I’m glad Darth is finally getting deep into game design and trying to give us the musket warfare experience we deserve. I’ve been following his stuff ever since his empire mod.

The bit about the weather wouldn’t surprise me. Franklin’s Almanac got really popular and took off as a cultural practice.

- Having Skirmishers is quite important, as you could see at the end of the battle. - I made the major mistake of allowing my left flank to get engaged as heavily as I did, it happens: I thought it would do better but should have delayed further. Broke my own rule. - Ranged can do damage but only over time. - Artillery is the toughest beast in battle in Melee. What are these Hellcanons? - BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD

Your treating the game as historical reality, and no the shovel was not better than the bayonet. The British specialised on the bayonet and it worked for hundreds of years. Also they could fire faster than American troops. The game ignores the 6 years of training of the British in the American revolution and gives a distorted view of numbers. If numbers were king the Americans would have rolled over the British all through the the war they did not, in fact the Americans suffered defeat after defeat. It took the French army and navy to save them and the Spanish army in Europe to do the same. In many battles of the revolution the British were out numbered but still won the day, that is due to training and superior fire power and tactics. Tarleton's cavalry was hated by the Americans because he was so effective. If the proper training of British troops was put in the game you would have a lop sided war. What the Americans did mostly was harass the British and then withdraw when it got too bad. Sometimes they took a chance and it paid off - Saratoga, most of the time it did not. A side not the British did not use the bayonet to stab in front, what i mean is they trained every man to stab the the enemy's right, it was difficult to defend against. They had to learn to do this as shield were used by Jacobite's and they had damn big swords - this was done at the battle of Culloden in 1746.

Of course it's not historical reality. What gave you that idea?

I was shocked by this unusual tactical approach playing out more like an arcade total war battle than what I am used to for this franchise. I question whether you put your troops at a disadvantage stretching them out in a long, single regiment depth semicircle. Your rationale is to achieve an envelopment but at expense of managing such a complicated front is inefficient, You have no tactical reserves and even if you did it would take them ages to get into place in this formation. I was also shocked that you seem to have not deployed any artillery; is it unavailable in this battle? What about using a more ordered linear formation for your battle line and deploying your brigades in some depth? In UG Civil War this approach while taking advantage of cover, concealment and enfilade/flanking fires is not only superior in tactical outcomes but critical to winning and preservation of forces on harder difficulty. Massed artillery could be very effective in controlling charging units due to the morale shock, a completely uninvestigated opportunity in this guide. While your forces soften up the enemy during their attack and skirmishers explore the extent of their flanks I would speculate there would still be plenty of opportunity for a flanking counterattack and on far more favorable terms. Very curious what kind of KDR your method produces.
