Have you considered incorporating items such as a beauty blender, eyeshadow brushes, or applicators for your charcoal? They're fairly inexpensive, and you could get a large one that they use for body powders. In one of your shorts, you used a large wall paintbrush to change your texture.

This was very informative. I wish I had seen this video before I used krylon on my first charcoal portrait. The krylon fine art fixative works nicely for watercolor pencil, but I was very disappointed with how it altered my charcoal drawing. Live and learn! Thanking you for sharing your knowledge with us.

@madcharcoal are you concerned at all about the charcoal dust from a health perspective? What do you do to ensure you’re not inhaling?

There is a better way to preserve your work. I am concerned your fixatives will not stand the test of time nor elements such as dust. 1) Apply your favorite Fixative or Krylon Matte Finish is my preference for paper taped down or canvas which is your next logical progression. I prefer Milo Canvas. Not all Canvas will give you the grit you need for charcoal. Gamblin Oil Ground is another excellent prep on any canvas to ensure Charcoal has a good surface. This is an option based on your choice of canvas. 2) Apply 2 Coats with brush in even strokes of Golden Soft Gel Gloss mixed 2water:1Gel Gloss then apply two coats. It comes on milky yet dries clear. Let it dry 24 hours between and after last coat before Varnish of your choice. 3) I prefer Liquitex Satin Varnish as the final layer that will resist dust and water plus allows a patron to mount your work au natural without a glass frame! Am I a world famous artist? Nope, just a person who worked for decades perfecting work flows for a paper company. When I became interested in charcoal I unfortunately had a really good artist tutor but they didn’t divulge or didn’t sell their charcoal work. It was merely a preliminary to a watercolor, acrylic or oil painting. I learned these charcoal preservation techniques from two skilled charcoal artists. I really admire your work and wish you even greater success. James

Lyra kneaded eraser is by far the best! I use it on Charcoal, Graphite, Colored pencils, Oil and dry sketching pencils like Red Chalk..Sketching/drawing, no 2 tool in my opinion, with pencil itself be the No1. Then it's the paper too on that very important spot. Fabriano Artistico, Arches Hot pressed both cover all my needs. I wish they made them in Spiral blocks or Sketchbooks, I would buy them in bulks!!! Forgot to mention my favorite pencils and what I 'd suggest to beginners: Kohinoor Red Clalk/ 5340/5347 5.6 lead holders, (they call the Red Chalk "Russet Sepia" on their 5.6mm size), For wooden graphite: Faber Castell Pitt Matt or 9000 , Lead hodlers 2mm TK 9400/TK 4600.with leads from the same brand Pentel Graphgear 500 (0.3mm/0.5mm) with Ain Stein leads. and you're set for life!! PS Those are the BEST in terms of performance and precision. No other comes close, even the way more expensive Rotrings, do not perform that good, as Pentels do ,and they don't last either.

In the image, you show color charcoal blocks. I haven't found too much information on them. Is that something that you like to use?
@MadCharcoal2 жыл бұрын
They are actually usually soft pastels or oil pastels that are colored, not charcoal. I use them sometimes but only for monochromatic works sense I do not prefer the use of color
