I am coaching Fall Ball for the first time and I am going to implement the tennis balls. Great way to show them placement of feet. love that.

I wish I could teach this lady to play Disc Golf. She would be absolutely awesome, in no time flat!

Thank you! I just started playing, and has NO IDEA what to do when I was batting. All I knew was, but the ball, run. Not any certain ways to hit it, but this helped me a lot!! ☺

that moment when for your 7 years of softball you've always been told to "squish the bug" and I'm learning here that I'm not supposed to

You are correct... squishing the bug will give you nothing but weak flubbers

She's still "squishing the bug"... Her foot just doesn't stay in the same spot. All "STB" does is emphasize hips turning. Younger hitters do not need as much of a weight shift when they are learning. Simple is easier. When they progress you can teach them correct weight shift like this drill demonstrates.

Addison McKinney squishing the bug is something that SHOULD be taught to very young players. It’s a tool that is used to get a child to understand the idea of rotation. But it should not be left at that. In short, explains hip rotation, separation, and stride gets really convoluted to a 5,6,7 year old.

Love the tire chock drill. Keeps young batters from leaning forward or sliding forward too much.

You refer to squashing the bug as a bad thing, but I'm teaching my 4 yr old to do that to use her hips, is it ok to do that at that age to get the basics down then as she gets older grow her out of it?

This is so much later, because now your 4 year old is at least 6 years old. But for future people reading the comments, if you tell a kid the squish the bug concept so they understand hip rotation, just make sure that you put the tee well in front of the plate. They should learn the lateral hip movement and “bounce off the tennis ball” forward naturally as long as the tee isn’t too far back. One of the biggest mistakes for young hitters is that the tee is set up in the middle of the body, so they just end up rotating around the ball and “squishing the bug”. I would advise teaching them proper tee placement by placing the tee out in front of their body, but not so far that they have to lunge and reach for it, and then allowing them to feel it out for themselves.

Looks like she is rocking and not coiling into her back leg. Is that bc of ball not allowing ?

She needs her hands back more coach to create separation, she has no power with that swing

She doesn't load with the knob pointing toward the catcher. Almost seems as if the bat is too heavy. Looks like a wooden bat.

Leaning back lets the hip come through. Almost every MLB player leans back.
