Just a tip, if you struggle with the knots, you can actually just tug at the rope and spread them out. i owned a chotki for several months before i figured that out. i saw priests using some in youtube videos where the knots were more spread out and easier to count, and wondered where they got them. one day i took a risk and just stretched out my chotki, and while i did fear i was about to just break it, what actually happened, is the knots all spread apart relatively evenly, and it's now become so much easier to count, as it's very obvious when you're at a new knot when they aren't so bunched together. it's made praying the chotki so much better, as i no longer have constantly glance down at my position.

When and how did get that Leathersoft OSB from Nelson? They've popped up as pre-orders and then disappeared again for a long time, but I had no idea some people were actually able to get a copy. Could you do an in-depth review and look at it on the inside for us? Thanks so much!

I've been orthodox for a few years and I have such a strong opposition to these types of videos. You don't need to make any purchases right away. You don't need the study bible- any Bible works great. Dr. Constantinou says the best version /translation of the Bible is one that you already have and will read. Otherwise her favorite translation/version is the Revised Standard edition. The OSB is great to the commentary, but I would honestly spend my money on a Lectionary that has the daily readings paired with Chysostom's commentaries. You don't need a prayer book right away- you can say the Jesus prayer and pray the Psalms in the Bible you already have. A prayer book your priest recommends can come later. You don't need a prayer rope right away. You don't need all the books right away. You can get a small postcard icon with the panagia and Christ on her lap. The ancient church was illiterate and they learned how to be Christian by attending the services. If you don't live within an hour of an orthodox church or monastery, make the move closer a priority. What the real essentials are, cannot be bought: the Jesus prayer, a spiritual father, a church community.

I agree with your point, as I said in the video, it’s best to speak to priest about these things. In regard to Bible translations, the reason I mention them is because almost all Bibles in the market are Protestant and contain Protestant presuppositions in their texts. You’re completely right these items are not a need, but they help of course.

Most orthodox churches, priests and scholars absolutely HATE the OSB. It’s horrible. It’s a very bad and weak translation… it’s a weak commentary and it’s very Protestant focused. Stay away from it! I’ve never heard of it nor seen it used by any Orthodox Church, catechism, priest, nor many orthodox Christians..except the brand new catechumens who think it’s something special. It also actually just mostly uses the NKJV and it tells you that and was was mostly spearheaded by Fr. Peter Gilquist who was the famous evangelical pastor that converted his whole church into an Orthodox Church. So there’s that. All you need is any Protestant Bible (especially if it has the apocrypha in it or “deutercannonicals” or get a Catholic Bible which is almost identical anyway.

Very true!! I’ve been ortho for many many years. All good points. For a newbie actually any Bible is good enough. But if you’re going to get an Orthodox Bible, The EOB is a better and more accurate translation basically an improvement of the OSB BUT they only made a NT version. OSB I never see used by any Ortho parish and only hear bad things about it. I have one and it’s okay to have and use and better than nothing. But it’s not really all that at all.

Best to get them at a Canonical Orthodox Church. If your Church does not have them I have some suggestions if you’re in the US. stmpress.com store.ancientfaith.com churchsupplies.jordanville.org/?srsltid=AfmBOoq8MKpim7NJ3Chu7CBDV5kjnkMWuxeYbv-n83gn8cIrsYuXfZtm

Icons you can get from many places, including at your local church. Orthodox countries/cities will often have religious supply shops - I recently came back from Greece with many lovely icons. Travelling to buy these is obviously more cost prohibitive. You can buy them online, though it can be harder to confidently authenticate these if not purchased from a trusted seller. I do not know where you live so I cannot comprehensively recommend any, but "Pilgrim Gifts" in the UK and "Legacy Icons" in the USA are a good starting point. The cheapest option for icons would be printing them. You can find good quality icon images online, and print these at home, or have them done professionally. You could then frame them if you so wished. Saint John Maximovitch had paper icons in his prayer corner. The same generally goes for other items (crucifixes, censers, chotkis, etc). Depending on the predominence of orthodoxy in your country, the internet is likely your next best option. You should be buying from verifiably "orthodox" outlets where possible. Various monasteries have online shops/international shipping. As for books, these similarly might be found at your church or local religious supply/book shop, but most likely you will have to go online - again without knowing where you are, Amazon is probably your best bet. You might also find some second-hand, e.g. on eBay. Your priest can likely give you more pertinent advice. God bless you

i am a non ortodox christian. what is the purpose of these materialistic things? Does an orthodox christian believe they need these things for salvation or is it about strengthening the holy spirit?

Christ deemed it fit to take on the material to work out our salvation. Material things are not bad in and of themselves, only in the absence of Christ.

Furthermore, a Bible is material in the same manner as a prayer book, mere circumscription of the immaterial (words, which denote concepts)

The reason we reject the faith alone doctrine or sola fide is because we believe that idea causes Christian to forget we have a purpose in this world. If faith alone will save us. But are constantly tempted by evil in this world, and we have the mindset (whelp I slipped and sinned but I’m saved), Satan has won and gives us zero purpose in this life. We have a purpose. And it’s to transfigure our souls back to Christ. Have a family. And lead be example out of integrity and honesty to save others. Don’t forget. Heaven is the goal. But we have a mission here too!!

Juat a note any Non Orthodox bible. Will not have the proper canon Doesn't matter if u get King James with Apocrypha/Deuterocanon. 1611 King James, Some Catholic Translation. We have 76 books, and the non Orthodox Deuterocanons will only bring u you 73 books. I suggest getting a KJV or NKJV and then getting a septuagint translation
