It (feels like) a long time since I was in Malaysia, but I can totally still remember that look of "oh, you're speaking Malay to me! That's cute."

'Terima kasih' and 'sama-sama' both literally mean 'receive love/care' and 'same (goes to you)' respectively. It's always a heartwarming way of showing gratitude.

Thanks for your efforts. As a local here, I must say that in the past Ive seen when foreigners came here and speak Malay to the locals here, it really put a smile on their face. Yes, it's rather easy to pick up the language.

Also guys for normal conversation we don’t pronounce the ‘a’ in things like ‘apa khabar’ as an a, but for so an e, it sounds really formal and awkward if you pronounce it as a

I have a frustrating experience. Not knowing where to begin or hitting a plateau can feel demoralizing and make it hard to hit the books and study like you know you should…Having friends from other cultures makes me more creative. In fresh ways about space and how people create their own world and environment. It is best way to connect between creative thinking and cross-cultural relationships😘🤗😁

Tom, I appreciate the insightful video you have uploaded here in regards to essential Malay phrases. Unfortunately as a native Malay speaker, I found a few flaws that I wish to rectify. "Petang" should be pronounced "peuh-tongue" instead of "peuh-tang" (as you did). "Datang" is pronounced "dah-tongue". "Tinggal" is pronounced "ting-gull".

I wish I would have found this video when I first arrived. In my opinion, it is difficult to learn the language because people don't speak their own language with foreigners. They prefer to speak English as a way to practice. Occasionally, I'll have a Grab driver who will practice with me but it's not nearly enough to be fluent. I know so many words... but, I haven't learned how to string the words together to form sentences.

Selamat literally means safe, so 'selamat pagi' literally, 'safe morning'. Your pronunciation is too heavily Westernised. especially when you saya 'DATANG'..you pronoun 'DE-TENG; (your 'ang' in 'datang' is like 'ang' in the English word 'bang' and your 'da' in datang' is like 'e' in 'the', which is wrong). You need to say "DA-TANG (the 'ang' in 'datang' must be pronounced like 'ung' in 'wrung' and 'da' should be pronounced da in 'dark)..sorry to corect you, I am a Malay from Malaysia..

Malaysians are upset with the pronunciation... ay yoooohhhhh, keep calm everyone, Malay is not his mother tongue, cant you appreciate a bit for sharing what he know in Malay? It may not be the best, but at least I understood everything he said. I appreciate his effort for doing this. If he did this with Tagalog or Filipino words, Im pretty sure Filipinos will appreciate what he is doing. Im 100 percent sure about that and he will get more views than this. Thanks Tom, today, It least I have increased my Malay vocabulary.

@stephenyarlett5292
@stephenyarlett5292 4 жыл бұрын
You are correct there is no apostrophe ' in maaf. However it is commonly used to show a glottal stop. In malay two a's together are pronounced separately with a slight glottal stop so they sound as separate syllables rather than one long syllable. Ma-af rather than mahf or marf.

The reason you get a smirk with "termia kasih" is because you're butchering it and pronouncing every letter. As someone who presumably lives in Malaysia, you should know it's a relaxed/lazy language, in my time here I've never had any Malay person say "selamat" as a whole, it's always got the relaxed/lazy spin on it, "sela pagi". Same with "terima kasih", it always hurts hearing the Brits say it, but better to try then not I suppose.
