I went on an unexpected trip to Malaysia and decided to learn Malay during my trip there.
I've heard from many people about how similar Indonesian (which I know) is to Malay, but I didn't realize how similar they are.
In this video, I talk to random people and try to speak Malay. I hope this inspires people to speak with natives speakers even if you are not that good!

Basic Malay is easy because it is written in roman alphabets but the formal and correct Malay is much more difficult unless you have many years of full time practice.

Why is it more hard ,??

The formal version of English isn’t too easy either. You can have a conversation. That doesn’t mean you can read science papers or take a college course. Every natural language has their different registers and common speech will always be the easiest and most useful.

@@ilune22There's 2 type of Malay. Baku (high Malay), Pasar (street Malay). Most Malaysian speak street Malay, still correct for both because during Sultanate of Malacca, there is a clear division between the Royalty upper class and the farmers and fishermen.

Historically & factually, Indonesian & Malay are the same language because both languages are actually adopted from Malay standard of Johor-Riau (now Johor in Malaysia; Riau in Indonesia) before Indonesia renamed the Malay language name to "Bahasa Indonesia" (Indonesian language). Johor & Riau used to be under 1 kingdom (sultanate) & were using the same Malay dialect & standard. In fact, in 1st Youth Congress of 1926, Muhammad Yamin (the one who wrote the "Sumpah Pemuda" in 1928 after the 2nd Youth Congress of the same year) suggested Malay language as the national language of Indonesia. ----->> However, in that 1926 Youth Congress, Mohammad Tabrani Soerjowitjitro, had OBJECTED to the ORIGINAL NAME of the (Malay) language because he wanted it to relate to the name of the nation (Indonesia). Thus, in 1928 Youth Congress, Muhammad Yamin (secretary) renamed it to "Bahasa Indonesia" (Indonesian language) in "Sumpah Pemuda" (Youth Pledge). FYI, the grammar of Indonesian language is basically the grammar of "Pedoman Bahasa" (which is Malay language grammar book), written by Raja Ali Haji & since it was initially a "Malay language" before being renamed, of course it has a lot of Malay vocabulary just like in Malaysia's Malay language (national & official language of Malaysia). That's why both are actually the same language before its original name was politically changed.

Currently in Indonesia Bahasa Malayu (Malay language) consisting of Malay Vocabularies Only is still a regional language in Sumatera such as Riau, Jambi, Medan, & South Sumatera. About Indonesian language, at the beginning Bahasa Indonesia was originally from Bahasa Malayu. In development, Indonesian language (Bahasa Indonesia) is different from Malay language (Bahasa Malayu) Time after time the vocabularies of other regional languages & foreign languages were added. In Indonesian language, you can find the vocabularies of regional languages such as Malay, Javanese, Sundanese, Minangkabau , Balinese, Buginese, Madurese, Papuan, Minahasan, etc... Up to 2008, KBBI Language Center added more than 3500 vocabularies of 70 regional languages as an Indonesian vocabularies. You can also find vocabularies of foreign languages (Arabic, India, China, Dutch) adopted as Indonesian vocabularies. Indonesian language's development keeps going in the future; "Badan Pengembangan & Pembinaan Bahasa Indonesia" keeps adding new vocabularies from regional & foreign languages to keep up with the times.

@@polyglotgrace - I'm a native Malay speaker. It's rude to call someone (for "you" pronoun) as "kamu", "awak" & "engkau/kau" who are older than you & unknown persons (strangers). Instead, use one of these words accordingly (to strangers, besides your own family members or formal situation): "mak cik" (aunt), "pak cik" (uncle), "abang/bang" (big bro), "kak/kakak" (big sis), "adik/dik" (younger sibling; use it toward a child or someone you see much younger than you) or "Encik" (Mr), "Tuan" (Sir), "Cik" (Miss), & "Puan" (Madam/Mrs.).

@@polyglotgrace - However, it's not wrong to use "kamu" or "awak" to strangers (but not to older person) who you see or deem has the same age (or almost) & status as you. Proof? @@polyglotgrace - BTW, don't use "aku" (I/me) to older persons too, it's rude & rough. But it's fine to use "aku" to someone younger than you or has the same age as you. In terms of "saya" for "I/me" pronoun (pronounced "sa-ye" in colloquial Southern / Central Malay or KL Malay), it can be used to either older or younger persons as well as to strangers; casually, informally & formally. However, someone who is older, usually call him/herself as "abang" (big bro) or "kak/akak/kakak" (big sis) when speaking to younger person(s).
@tuah007

@@polyglotgrace - I like to add, in real life & local dramas/movies too, some people (not all) use "rojak" language (broken English & Malay), so you'll encounter (have already encountered, in this video) some people use "I" & "you" pronouns when they speak or answer you in Malay instead of "awak" or "kamu". Those "rojak" language or the foreign pronouns (Malay language doesn't borrow them at all) are usually used by urban people & people who used to learn almost everything in English in college / university as well as have been influenced by the culture of "I & you" pronouns from dramas/movies. But still, there are also people who use "awak" & "kamu" in real life & local dramas/movies especially toward strangers (who are not much older).

There are many similarities between standard Malay language and standard Indonesian language that the people from 2 countries can communicate easily. However there would be several different dialects (in Malaysia at least minimim 10, a whole lot more in Indonesia) which even I myself aa Malaysian would find a little bit difficult to understand. Indonesian language has many inputs from the Netherlands while Malay has more from English language. There are also words from indian, sanskrit and even tagalog due to past histories and geographical conditions. As Malays live alongside chinese and indian, there is fusion between the 3 languages plus english as well and commonly known as Manglish.
