Here's a quick and easy way to use "mental math" to figure our how much more your restaurant bill is going to cost. A useful resource for teachers of lower-level or "essential" math classes.

This is one of the thing I have to look up constantly, cuz I forget after I learn it, and I rarely eat out. Then, I panic when I'm like, I don't know how to calculate for shit. I could do without this rock music though. It's distracting.

I completely hear you! I’m the same way! I know, but I don’t at the same time and I struggle a lot with calculations if I can’t visualize it. I watched this video muted and it was perfect! Lol I’m currently refreshing my memory as I am in the restroom of a restaurant-if you feel embarrassed, just know that nothing is more embarrassing than me doing mental math in the bathroom rn 😂

Or you just turn your percent into a decimal [move decimal point 2 times] Example-15% becomes .15 Then you’d do your total 20 •.15=3. And 3 is your tip

As an actual adult, and as someone who worked as a server for several decades, I NEED to point out a few problems with this video. It doesn't teach you how to tip, it teaches you (rather clumsily) how to calculate percentages. Tipping is not just math, though; it has nuances. And how often is your bill going to be a nice, easy number like $30? I taught my son to do it PROPERLY when he was very young, and now I'm going to teach you. 1. Giving excellent service is harder than it looks. Appreciate your server's efforts--and ensure you'll be remembered on your next visit--by establishing yourself as a good tipper. 2. Here's how: Look at the total, and round it UP to the next dollar. Calculate 10% by moving the decimal, DOUBLE IT to make 20%, and then tack on a few extra dollars. EXAMPLE: Your total is $54.22. Round UP to $55. Move the decimal to the left: $5.50 then DOUBLE IT: $11.00. Tack on $2.00. Your tip is $13.00. If your ticket is low--like, if you just had coffee and a donut, or a $7.00 lunch special--tip 30%. It's a tiny difference, dollar-wise, but it will make your server's day. (20% of $7.00 is $1.40. DO NOT EVER leave a tip that small. It's an insult to your server. A 30% tip is $2.10, a difference of a mere 50 cents. So be awesome, and tip $2.50, or $3.00.) IF you ever have that brain-dead moment where you tell yourself it's okay to leave a crappy tip because you're broke, I have this for you: IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO TIP, YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO EAT OUT. Go to the grocery store instead. or at the very least, eat somewhere with a Drive-Through window, not a server. *That* is how real adults do it. You're welcome.

@@1theheightofparadise my guy. Listen, being a waiter is one of the hardest jobs you don't need to go to college for, people do not respect them enough. i for one support this comment! you however probably have no idea of any of this. so take your "imagine this! imagine that!" to a comment that actually deserves it.

hi sorry for being 5 years late but let me see if i can explain! EXAMPLE: your total: $80.00 • move the decimal to the left ONCE, that will be the 10% of your TOTAL -your 80. will then turn into a 8.0- • then you multiply that 8.0 by 2! 8.0x2= 16 your tip will be $16
