Step by step show & tell - how to set up the No55 and cut a basic profile using iron number 102.
Let me know what you think and if you have any specific questions about using the No55, I’m more than happy to try to help find an answer

What great timing for this to pop up. This morning I bought Craftsman's version of this with 21 blades. Want to add, MJ is both an awesome dude and a bad influence.

i have been playing around with my 55, using various profiles whilke building my tool cabinet! the 102 and the slightly bigger version are a great intro to the skate height adjustment

I want one of these, starting to look for one. Thanks for sharing potential frustrations users might have, and to me messing with it is half the fun to understand how it works, genius really.

If you have a No45, that’s a great one to start with first. The technique for using it is very similar but the 45 is a bit lighter and sometimes easier to manage. The 55 is its big brother for sure

Looks like a fun plane to mess around and definitely less messy and noisy than a modern day router. The iron looks pretty sharp as well

They become real fun when you start using some of the #60 Ogee cutters in conjunction with the auxiliary centre bottom. My 55 is a Sweetheart model with the straight spurs, I noticed yours has the 'star' spurs. Fun toys 😀

Great video MJ. So do you like the 55 over the 45?
@justplanefun
@justplanefun 2 жыл бұрын
I really like both. The 55 excels at certain profiles (I have a video on that too) and the 45 is a bit quicker to set up for the flat ones. For folks on a tight budget I would recommend the 45 to start with. Master that and then work up to the 55. Lots of parts (accessories such as depth stops) are interchangeable between the two so that’s something to keep in mind if building one up from parts

Simple Green, let it soak for a bit, then a brush or some other non-abrasive to clean it up 0000 steel wool and wax can help a lot too. The least aggressive method necessary to remove the grime. Kinda depends on how bad it is

Hello thank you for the video - there is not a lot of information about thus plane. I've got a Stanley No 55 and I got some trouble with fixing the fence/screws it likes to loosen and the fence moves which is a bad thing -do you have an Idea what one can do about it? thanks anyway
@justplanefun
@justplanefun Жыл бұрын
I would start by ensuring the screw threads are all clean and the screw hole as well. It’s possible they could be dirty. Or they could be worn from a lot of use. If that’s the case, replacing it would be best. You *could also try some type of thread tape if you want to stick with what you have. That or tighten it with a screwdriver or other manual method as applicable - but that’s sketchy as you don’t want to mess it up. Feel free to send me some pics to jplanefun@gmail.com

I have a quick question about the 55, I just finished brushing off the worst of the dirt and surface rust from the body on mine, but discovered a crack at the top of the handle casting just across from the top handle pin. I’m not sure if it’s just residual grit around the adjuster wheel or if the casting is bent a little, making it harder to turn the wheel, but is that fatal to the plane in the long run? I haven’t reassembled it to try out yet but the handle is still in good shape, so I’m wondering if that happened because it was in a wet environment at some point and the handle expanded.
@justplanefun
@justplanefun Жыл бұрын
Not sure what would have caused it but if you find that it’s not serviceable, let me know - I’m nearly certain I have a direct replacement for just the main body section available for sale. You can move all of your good parts over to the replacement

I've recently bought a no 55E plane, it's a stanley sweetheart. I haven't used it yet, been to busy cleaning it up! You seem to know a lot about the history of these, do you know what the E stands for? And does the 55E differ at all? Thanks.
