It’s one week since my beloved German shepherd slipped away in his sleep. We were inseparable and I’m left with a piece of my heart torn out. Adagio for strings is playing and tears are streaming down my face. I miss him with every fiber. He came to us during Covid and kept my son afloat emotionally and spiritually during that dark time. We rescued him and and he saved us.

Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, the first song in this playlist, is written to reflect Barber's relationship with his father. Growing up, Barber was gay and was for the rest of his life, but his father didn't approve, which led to abuse. Later in life, Barber decided to mend things with his father, but his father passed before he could truly say he mended things. He never got to resolve things with his father, which is why the song never resolves. The playlist cuts the ending out, but please, listen to it. I recommend the choir version. The thumbnail is the sheet music, look up "barber adagio choir satb" and it should pop up. It's truly an amazing piece of art.

La saison d’un sentiment de repos. Pas de sérénité pour autant. Des choses qui mûrissent sans en avoir l’air. Une relation qui s’installe. Qui se découvre une forme de voisinage ; peut-être une forme de compagnonnage. Un autre rapport au temps et aux saisons. Une vie qui virevolte au rythme des nuages. Savoir rester calme permet de garder de l’énergie pour la sortir au bon moment. Rien ne sert d’aimer un sourire si celui-ci reste muet. Celui qui n’a pas peur de la mort n’existe pas. En revanche, celui qui peut prendre tous les risques n’a pas peur de la mort. J’entends une grenouille au fond du jardin. Et aussi le bruit sourd d’un tracteur dans l'obscurité.. La campagne n’a plus de paysages. Ils se ressemblent tous. Un peu monotone, un peu lent. Ne tombez pas dans le ravin. Il est profond. La remontée est difficile. Il faudra ouvrir les dents et grincer des yeux sans regarder vers le vide. Et n'oubliez pas que le temps ne règle pas tous les problèmes. Il faut savoir les affronter. Les regarder en face et les surmonter. Pas à pas. Lentement mais sûrement comme un escargot sur la paroi d'une fenêtre.

Albinoni's adagio takes me to that final scene in "Gallipoli" when the young ANZACs are reconciling themselves to accept their destiny before going "over the top" to offer their all and have it accepted. Such a haunting scene and solemnly accentuated by that beautiful adagio.
