As a Scot I always knew this was misleading. I have known people who owned large areas of land here and didn’t have titles. “Laird” has never been analogous to “Lord”. One year, when I was a very bird obsessed child, for a gift my parents got me a picture of a bird as the ‘physical’ part of a donation to a local wildlife organization, along with some boring info on how the organization works behind the scenes. I mean if you have millions of subs and are rolling in cash you have the financial freedom to take the high road. But getting $15k every video you make could be massively life changing to a smaller creator and so of course the vast majority of them held on for as long as they could with only a few feeling morally obligated to apologize. I don't know how to feel about youtubers who made ads for this scam company but I do felt bad for ordinary people who fell for it. From what I've seen, it looks like the ones who bought into it are from countries where there's no "Lords" or "Lady" titles and so they probably didn't really know how that works and hearing they're paying for an alleged tree preservation sounded like a good thing. It's also pretty heartbreaking to see people say they bought it as a nice gift for someone only for it to be a scam.

These companies are like those “name a star” things. Like I got it for Christmas one year. Named mind after a singer who was big in Canada who passed but like, I know I don’t own it. And it’s named whatever tf NASA has named it.

There's this company with the same scam, that you can name a star and get a title.
