In my experience I don't see dirt make its way to the needle valve preventing it from sealing. What I do see is the needle valve getting jammed in the carb body with a poor casting or a float that sticks . Aftermarket carbs with rough castings and poor part fitment. I suspect it will happen again unless you turn the fuel off every time.
@GrampiesWorkshop
@GrampiesWorkshop 26 күн бұрын
How's she goin'? That could be Steve. When I saw the dirt I figured that was the culprit for causing the flooding because the dirt and scum would either jam the float and not let it close the needle or some grit would get on the needle seat and cause it not to close. Either way, shutting off the fuel is the 'best practice' eh!! But every solution has a problem, and the problem with this solution is, you guessed it, you have to remember to turn on the fuel!! LOL Thanks for the comment. Take 'er easy!!

How's she goin'? Maybe it should be called 'hydra' locked, I'm not too sure. I always referred to it as hydrolocked since the engine was locked up with fluids, be they oil, gas or a combination of both!! LOL Take 'er easy and thanks for tuning in Mike!!

Its a terable thing for an engine to hydro lock and to have that much gas in the oil. they should run them engines with a pump but then that brings on other problems... Well done Mike, good fix,,,,CHEERS

Hello there Del!! That's a good plan to run the engine out of gas. I use Stabil, that's a product that helps keep gas fresh and prevents gumming up due to ethanol. Not too sure what happened here because the carb was gummed up pretty good. Thanks for tuning in. Take 'er easy!!

@GrampiesWorkshop 25 күн бұрын
How's she goin'? Oh man, me too Joseph. This carb, and it's not the first one I installed from offshore, has been working great for over a year now. I think this failure was due to dirt in the carb and it getting stuck on the float and preventing it from closing. There sure was a lot of gas in the oil. Did you hear the sound of it draining? I have never heard a noise like that before. Thanks for watching. Have a great week!!

Good evening Mike. Nice to see that you got the engine running. I am curious to how so much debris got into the float bowl. Have a good one!
@GrampiesWorkshop
@GrampiesWorkshop 25 күн бұрын
How's she goin'? There sure was a of of debris in the bowl eh. I bought this machine used and it was sitting outside for a long time before I got it. When I looked in the tank it looked pretty clean and I installed one of those 'deal' fuel filters. I haven't changed it since and now I see this, so I think the debris comes form 2 probable sources: 1 - the old tank was never flushed when I first bought the machine and 2 - the fuel filter is inferior quality. I changed the filter but still have not flushed the tank. Maybe I should do that just to be safe eh! Thanks for commenting. Paul. Take 'er easy!!!

Nice tune up. Fresh and ready to go. Like I said before. If you want to avoid all of this in the future simply run to almost empty then put some ethanol free gas through your motor at the end of the season. No gas treatment needed. All of the big hardware stores carry it. It is spendy at about $20 a gallon, but it's worth it. A gallon will last you years cause it doesn't take much to clean everything out, and it doesn't go bad. Take care.
@GrampiesWorkshop
@GrampiesWorkshop 25 күн бұрын
How's she goin'? I was in Canadian Tire today and had a look for some of this ethanol free gas and couldn't find any. Maybe if I asked at the counter. I have been using Stabil since Colonel Sanders was a corporal and never had issues with stale gas or gummed up carbs. I think both of these hydrolock issues were caused by dirt in the carb, not necessarily stale or gummed up gas. Take care and thanks for commenting.

WOW MIKE, Great to see you chasing this problem down. I have heard of these catching fire. Nasty stuff eh. No one can tell if this is a nail in thr coffin of this Estate car. As long as it has mechanical bottom end bearings or has it got shell style ? It MAY continue to smoke and burn oil as the excess gas can glaze cylinder walls. Only our old nemisis"Time" will tel us that story. Great that you had some positive results this fine day. It's always great to see my old friend here today. Hugs for Nanny J and a good arm shake for you bud. Take care eh.
@GrampiesWorkshop
@GrampiesWorkshop 26 күн бұрын
How's she goin'? Thanks for mentioning about the gas glazing the cylinder Dean. I never thought of that. I'll keep a close eye to see how that goes. It sure did have a load of gas in the oil though. Holy moly it was draining out like water from a bucket!! To tell you the truth I was kind of nervous to let it run for too long because of all the oil/gas that was in the muffler. I was kind of expecting it to ignite. But lucky for me it didn't. I'm toying with the idea of putting a stack exhaust on it. That would help with the oil/gas laying in the muffler if this ever happened again. And it might look pretty cool too! LOL Your knowledge of these type problems is immense Dean and I'm glad to have you on here dropping the little pearls of wisdom in your comments. Take 'er easy!!
