I would love to see you dive into the documents that someone should have prepared, as well as how to make a list like Henah described. If something were to happen to me, my kids would be lost right now! I don't want to put that on them, but I don't really know what to do to make it easier on them.

Definitely worth a deeper dive! I'm an ICU nurse and seeing the families who have had these conversations vs. the ones who clearly have not is heartbreaking. Too many times have I seen a patient about be placed on hospice only for one child who hasn't seen them in the past decade say no you have to do CPR on her etc. Having these conversations and more importantly having the LEGAL DOCUMENTS is the way to protect dignity and comfort when the time comes.

Thanks Katie and Henah! Excellent intro for a VERY necessary topic for everyone! Initially, ours was an analog version. We sat down around the kitchen table when the adult children and son-in-law were home for Christmas (yep - super festive!). We had copies of anything legal, medical, insurance, financial, passwords, etc. spiral bound for each of them. Now all of that is in an encrypted doc that they can access. We call it “The Treasure Map”. As aging parents in our 60's and 70’s please believe me that the more you talk about this with your parents the better they will feel, even if it’s difficult. Most likely they are worried about this and will be relieved when you bring it up. My mother was a retired bookkeeper and had her estate meticulously planned and communicated to me. Even when it’s done well it is a time-consuming and heartbreaking task while you are grieving the loss of a loved one.
