Sherry Ann and I go to a lot of Estate Sales. We're always looking for bargains and I don't mind buying used - better for the environment. Last weekend I found a Radio Shack PRO-64 Handheld Scanner for ONE DOLLAR in perfect condition. This was one of the best handheld scanners on the market back in 1998 - and even by today's standards it's a great radio. After some digging - it seems that you can program these with a computer but documentation for this feature is basically impossible to find. By piecing together the history of the radio, combing through Ham Radio websites I finally figured it out - and demo it here. The PRO-64 and the data cable can both be found on eBay - the scanner for $30-$80 and the data cable for $29 - so I suppose it's now a $30.00 radio... LOL Either way, it was a fun project for a Saturday afternoon - and I now have a scanner I can take to the rail yard, on train trips, or other places where an analog scanner is still useful (much - like police went mostly digital) and not worry so much if it gets lost, broken or stolen.
The USB to Serial (FTDI) adapter you can purchase on Amazon using this link.

I have three or four of these and use them for all my radio sync needs - if you have anything with a 9 or 25 pin RS-232 F - this is the cable for you.
Want to support the channel? (friends have graciously asked) - then please buy us a taco! :) You can do that at www.buymeacoffee.com/teamtyde - all proceeds NOT used for taco's (or fried chicken at Jollibee) will go toward finding homes for abandoned cats and kittens. Sherry Ann is personally supporting at least 2 cat shelters that I know of - and probably several more I don't know about... ;)
