My android handheld feels like a modern controller and it feels weird top try to play retro games on it. I also really like the upgradeability factor. I already swapped out the buttons for a set of original concave/convex indigo/violet snes ones. I can only imagine, especially since pi5 has been delayed till 2024, that we will be able to run dolphin and ps2 when it's time to upgrade to 5. There's no way I'll pay $150 for this though, even though it looks like a better design than the PiBoy DMG.

In my opinion, they should have made it wider, shifted Start and Select over to the right side as C and Z or + and -, and placed a Home button next to Menu. This would have made it seem more natural for Sega Genesis, Atari Jaguar, Sega CD, Sega 32X, Sega Saturn, PC Engine/Turbo Grafix 16, and Nintendo 64 games while keeping a close to natural feel for other systems such as the NES, SNES, Game Boys, and PlayStation provided they edited the profiles for some systems to move start and select for 3 and 6 button systems when needed via core remapping. Example, using the as L2 and R2 on the Genesis and Nintendo 64 cores.

Well its not really too late for one, just biggest downside is as cool as experimental Pi's handhelds are, the costs for the kit makes it very hard to justify anymore. As the Pi4 is expensive as is right now(140+), making it so you'd end up having to spend 300-400 or more on it all (adding in SD cards/etc too). When you can get some really nice retro handhelds for 150ish or less that dont really take much more than adding in SD card. The idea of Pi powered ones are so nice as I own a few myself, just they are sadly pi zero powered so cant do as much. Just cant see a reason to spend so much for a pi4 powered one when can say buy a new Anbernic RG353V/RG353VS/RG353P for like 140ish bucks that can play enough of the old retro console games that youd play on the two piboy handhelds without spending 300-400 bucks. Plus those 3 anbernic handhelds are android too, allowing people who arent as knowledgeable with linux based systems to easily emulate too (they are linux too as all 3 are dual OS). Plus android can slightly out emulate rasp Pis based on all experience I've seen. That's not even counting android phones themselves, even cheaper ones to a point, can do it all. Just those lack the built in buttons/feel/etc of a handheld device. If they weren't so high in costs, it'd really make them worth it but sadly their costs for the kits alone are usually so high that having to spend just as much for the rasp pi on top of SD cards, just makes it something that ends up very hard to do when for less than half of that total cost can get something that will usually play things just as well.

It arrived with a broke sd card slot, the original board and the replacement board i got to fix the sd slot, both had drift in the joysticks in less then a week. I had issues with their software from day one and never got it working right even though i have built plenty of other builds. I spent all my time working on each new problem and no time playing it. Every time i fixed something, something else would have gone out or stopped working properly. The concept is cool but from my perspective they gave up and sold me a POS to get out from under their inventory. And by the time i gave up on it, it was to late to return and the drift is really bad so i cant play it.

Back when most reasonably priced handhelds had performance so bad they couldn't even run SNES reliably I really wanted a handheld formfactor for my pi 2. I've looked at doing a diy one many times over the years but sourcing all the parts was too expensive despite the cheap handhelds being cheaper than just the non pi parts. I would have been happy with the same cheap screens and buttons just with a pi inside. Sadly the only pi dedicated projects have always been too expensive for what they are. While this one looks awesome I just don't see the point over a comparably priced entire handheld vs this without even the pi included. I thought for sure when the pi zero was released we'd get a ton of cheap handhelds using it as a base but no... I specifically want a GBA with decent display and enough power for 2d ps1 but not for over $150 like the free play one. It doesn't seem like too much to ask, and indeed various companies have offered similar devices much cheaper, but I'd still like a diy kit for the gba shell and not pay way more than a whole device. Sorry for the rant, this one just hit close to home since I've dreamed about it for years.

Is the piboy xrs comparable to the retroid pocket 2.5/3? Can u compare these two in a video. Compare value for money.

If you already own a Pi I think it's worth. If you don't own a Pi, holy shit this thing is expensive and not worth.

This is for people who already have PI 4 boards and want to play around with the Pi. We could have delayed release till Pi prices came back down to retail but why wait till then when we know there are millions of Pi 4s already out in the wild. We safely assumed there would be thousands of potential customers even now. We aren't some fly by night that will disappear tomorrow so its an easy sell. Buy it now or wait and buy it later when you can get a Pi 4 and feel like tinkering. Those people that keep pointing out there are lots of cheap retro handhelds are right. There are. And if that was our target market we would be worried about sales. Our target market, however, is RPi people that like playing around with the Pi.

They really should have done a GameBoy ADVANCE design for this and change their original PiBoy DMG to a compute4 Module instead of a full fledged Pi (look at the LCL CM4, it's amazing) as nobody needs, nor wants to see, an ethernet port sticking out of a GameBoy... ...the ONLY people who will want something like this are in it 90% for NOSTALGIA... and this is a brand new design, not a nostalgic throwback. The Experimental Pi PiBoy and LCL Pi GameBoy do so well because they're essentially a Carbon Copy design with extra buttons, a GameBoy Advance PiBoy would do just as well if not better, but THIS? This can't decide what it wants to be and does neither well, lowering an already low interest.
