yikes that price. given the wide variety of handheld options at $150 and below i can't think of a single reason to get this. even if it shipped with the pi included, it STILL wouldn't make sense at that price. perhaps a few years ago it might've been worth the cost, but with the anbernic 35xx sitting at around $60 and the retroid pocket 3+ at $150 this seems like a really difficult sell.

Seems like more targeted toward raspberry pi people in general. Likely upgradable to pi5.

The rg35xx is not a fair comparable. The rp 3+ is the better comparable that can do everything this piboy does and doesn't need to buy a sbc to do it. At around the 150 price plus shipping.

@@noonetoday3210 I'd love that, but I've been shaving my megadrive case to pieces to fit a radxa zero (plus crap) in it ... and I know that putting a 4 in would be painful too as I initially tried. Sorry, not trying to be a negative nelly, just saying that they have not got a great track record for keeping layouts just right. ;-)

I'm happy to see symmetrical thumbsticks (that's my preferred design) but other than that, I'd still rather see this with a more Switch-like design, especially the screen size. I'm spoiled by the size of the Switch screen, so going back to, say, PSP or Vita size would be a pain. "But they're more portable" I hear some people saying. I have big pockets! I can fit a switch in my jeans pockets pretty easily, and don't understand why so many clothing designers are anti-pocket. But I digress. It sucks that the switch doesn't have video playing capabilities. To have all the stuff my Pi3 currently has (retropi+Kodi) but with Pi4 and a switch-like form factor + size would be perfect.

The unit looks very good, however , I only have 1 8gig Raspberry 4 model and it's in my RasPad in which I use to control my SDR's and TV dongle in my bedroom using my 20" HP monitor as the 2nd screen. I was going get a Raspberry tablet kit whose name escapes me that used a CM4 module, but CM4 modules are expensive and lacking nowadays. So PINE is coming out with the new PINE-TAB 2 in about a month in the $200 range with a RK3356 chip and 10.5" screen which is price I saw on Amazon for the CM4 module. Great Video, Have a nice week.

very nice looking and well put together product. thanks for your video... i just wanted to take this opportunity to ask about different topic: which was my hunt for the best posible lcd screen for rpi4 and cm4. so in that search i really wanted to find one which used the mipi dsi bus (instead of hdmi) because normally those mipi dsi lcds well that interface is designed specifically for smartphones and tablets. so it aught to use less power and translate into longer battery life. which i think is important for devices like a handheld console, or for a tablet style (with touch), or a cyberdeck text based terminal with a keyboard. unfortunately mipi dsi is just an electrical specification. wheras the communications protocol layer riding ontop of that is often custom proprietary and specific to those hardware vendor or commercial devices. in other words not open source or publically available, unless you are those business ordering thousands of units for manufacture. so this is why so few decent displays are actually supported on the rpi4 / cmr4 despite it having the mipi dsi port. so there are not very many 'true' mass manufactured lcd displays you can actually take out and use the spare part from old smartphones. which is a shame. however last week i stumbled across this project for just such an lcd display, which is an open hardware project (pcb files) + open software project (driver) over on github. they are named 'renetec-io/cm4-panel-jdi-lt070me05000' and 'harlab/CM4_LCD_LT070ME05000' respectively. and they seem to be exactly what is missing or needed to support that lcd part, which is the JDI LT070ME05000... and boy does it have decent specs at a decent price. to quote from harlab's readme description: > JDI LT070ME05000 is 7" 1200x1920 4-lane DSI IPS display used in Asus/Google Nexus 7 2013 tablet. To use it, 4-lane DSI interface is required, so it can be used with Raspberry Pi Compute Modules 3 and 4. Some suppliers have these displays available from ~$US20 shipped. There is a driver for this panel in a mainline already included, so we only need to compile/install it and make device tree overlay so it looks like out best bet, from what i can find so far. unless somebody else has found any other similar projects out there... see there was an older project to use the iphone4 display however that one required a cutom fpga to translate the display interface. so it was not ideal. the other question is whether the touch (optional) can also be made to work. idk about that, and also idk what is the current status of these github projects. whether working or not since activity seems to have died off. it may also be necessary to order custom pcb adapter board for cm4, wheras for rpi4 i am not so sure whether all you need is the right ffc cable or other cables. so anyhow i hope you can take a look since these LT070ME05000 are indeed affordable either on aliexpress (with or without touch layer, as a brand new spare part)... or they are salvagable from old google nexus 7" 2013 tablets. hope this information is found to be helpful in some small way, please take a look if you are interested. because clearly if the display working in google nexus tablet, then it has to be relatively low power. for creating around that display some mobile / handheld rpi devices. while keeping the battery runtime as high as it can possibly be, for a large bright and high resolution display with good colors. so surely that must be a thing that is worth looking into, right? to build future products around.

@eliotcole
@eliotcole 2 жыл бұрын
It might be, but you would have to map the GPIO on the RADXA as it's a different layout. Hopefully doable, just find out which pins do what, then wire them up, there should be room. Isn't the Radxa Zero technically more powerful than the pi 4?

Looks a good build. But the elephant in the room is the price. If this was the only thing in the world, then great, you'd buy it. However, it's around the price of a second hand PS4. Throw in a Pi4, which are only available on FeeBay and the likes, you're talking near to a PS5 second hand price. It's hard to justify for a handheld.

Way overpriced. When you add the cost of a Pi 4 (even at it's original price), charger and SD card required you can see that a readily made handheld would be a far better option. The AYN Odin Lite is $199 and offers a far better experience and capability. Many other even handhelds give you far greater value.
