It is using Cortex A76 core from 2018. Imagine if they would put today's Cortex X4 core in it. X4 has 2x IPC, so basically twice as fast at the same clock. This would be full office PC for a few bucks. Next Orange Pi 6 will be awesome x86 PC killer!!!

Me too... And now I'm running the newest RPi5 and it's amazing. The new Raspbian Bookworm is just perfect regarding whole ecosystem and the drivers are much better compared to previous version (I mean networking performance for example). The only problem is that the 3D Wayland window system is still not complete, so I turned to the legacy X-window system now. I hope it will be fixed soon. Anyway the performance for just 4 cores is awesome.

I agree. These SBCs are cool and all, and I'm sure there are use cases, but aside from that, used office PCs, mini or otherwise, have been the best value around for a while. I made the switch a couple of years ago having bought several of them and they work a lot better for me. At one point not even a year ago, I was seeing systems with fourth-gen i5s, which are still very good for many things, going for $40-50 with their power supplies. Yeah, they'll draw more power than SBCs, but they still draw a small amount to where it doesn't matter much, at least for me. On the plus side, there's far more flexibility with the OS, no worry about graphics drivers(the biggest sticking point for SBCs), and several other things. That flexibility goes a long way. Recently, systems with Ryzen APUs have dropped below 100 and they can handle PS2 rather well.

ARM's strengths still with power to performance ratio. A 100 dollar Intel PC will have a Celeron which would struggle emulating some newer systems that ARM chips in the same range won't have problems with. And PC games that have mobile counterparts are very optimized for the mobile versions.

I bought the 16GB Plus, since 32GB is definitely overkill. I love that they include an eMMC interface. You can add a 256GiB module for dirt cheap and it takes up zero extra space for an OS drive, while also leaving NVMe open for pure storage. I plan to use mine for the dual 2.5Gbit ports as a core router running OpenWRT (they offer a ready-made image) with a NAS docker image to store media. I was able to pull the full 2.5Gbit across the ports with no problem at all, making this WAY cheaper than retail 2.5Gbit routers from the usual brands...yes, I know that's not accounting for the built-in multi-port switch, but a more robust router with adblock, et al, still makes it a great value setup for 2.5Gbit networks. I needed a PoE switch, anyway.

@@SkittleKicksPlays Given it's a small-scale ARM CPU (versus say an Ampere), 32GB is pretty hard to fill up for most use cases. No point in springing for the more expensive 32GB when 16GB will suffice for 98% of what you'd actually be able to get running on the SoC. However, I do love that OPi offers a 32GB option for the remaining 2%. I've been buying more OPi devices than RPi lately. They've really become a force for driving the platform forward and putting a little fire under RPi's butt to be competitive again.

Router & NAS sounds like a great combo of application for it. I'd most certainly go for 16GB RAM as well, that's.more than plenty for that use case. The only thing that would bug me, is that I'd want to make use of the HDMI input/passthrough too. Though, pretty sure the RAM at least should be enough to handle another container for that. Perhaps, it gets tight once you do heavy transcoding, but I'd stick to max 720p anyway. Anything above again needs excess storage, etc. anyway, hence it'll outgrow a tiny ARM board quickly.

Don't expect too much. Mainline is still extremely buggy and will continue to be so for quite some time. The builds are purely experimental, very constrained hdmi support, no graphics drivers that enable hardware acceleration, and looots of serious bugs. Rockchip is expected to publish a 6.1 kernel soon, that should work better. I'd expect it to be usable when Ubuntu 24.04 with an adaped kernel becomes available. Mainline maybe another year later...

I have the 16GB Orange Pi 5 Plus running Joshua Reik's Ubuntu 22.04 image doing some rather simple server tasks. I was using an ancient Intel NUC but moving to this SBC allowed me to cut energy usage to 1/3rd (65W vs 20W). You got the chip wrong btw, its a Rockchip RK3588 and not the S variant which is the one with more limited IO found in the Orange Pi 5B and the Khadas Edge2. The S variant does not support dual 2.5gig LAN or the PCIe 3.0 x4 for the M.2 NMVe. I have confirmed that the front type c can run a type c monitor though you will certainly want to provide extra power to the monitor as the brightness is very low (my 16" 2560x1600 120Hz UPERFECT uses about 15W and the PSU for the Orange Pi 5 Plus is only 20W so understandable). I was using a 1TB M.2 NMVe but ended up settling on the 256GB eMMC that came with it. Note that the eMMC is proprietary and actually has two connectors instead of the one connector commonly found on other SBCs.

Is that too much to ask from this. I wonder if it has good hardware accelerated encoding, can it handle 1080p in, 1080p out, and then add a few overlays, encode, record, and stream 1080p.
@SwordfighterRed
@SwordfighterRed 8 ай бұрын
The hardware acceleration's been something of a hard point for these boards - I have a NanoPC T6 which is very similar, spec-wise, and hardware acceleration isn't a given universally, things have to be built against the Rockchip and its HDMI-In and the like. Usually, commands are on the device's respective wiki to access it through GStreamer on Linux, and there's a dedicated app on dedicated Android images to access HDMI-In, but while it looks possible, it's not the most plug-and-play solution. I need to test more, personally, and I've seen MicroLinux do it with these boards with some success, but as it stands, it seems to take an Ubuntu-type distro with a particular display server and graphics stack and PPA with custom-built software to get hardware accel on OBS.

The thing about Orange Pi 5 and Android is that a good amount of games are made for touchscreen and you might be better of with their Android 12 version with touchscreen which was last updated (for vanilla OPi5) this November. This version feels really nice although not perfect still it has less issues than Droid OS which for vanilla OPi 5 was last updated this April. You can literally make yourself an Android tablet like device with 16/32GB RAM and 1TB SSD that you can use for Linux and Batocera on the side or vice versa. Furthermore you can also use it with openFyde that has both Linux and Android subsystems which is neat but last time I tried it did not work with touchscreen. I feel that 32GB is overkill for gaming and is more on the server side of things however I would like to point out Orange Pi 5 has a long way to go in terms of software support but it will start getting there maybe starting 2024. Personally I even bought one for my father so he can use it for a secondary PC on his TV and expect it to be useful to him in the coming years. On a second note I want the Orange Pi 3B to also get a bit of spotlight while it is not as powerful as OPi 5 it offers 8GB RAM, WiFi+BT, both NVMe and eMMC slots for around of 70$ with 256GB eMMC which is a sweet considering current prices. It is also slightly less powerful than RPi4.

Touchscreen is a fundamentally laggy and unresponsive input interface with zero tactile feel. After 40 years of gaming, I also much prefer a controller to mouse and keyboard. I wonder if Apex Legends Mobile ever bothered to put in controller support... If Max Payne can have it, any game can.

The main problem this Rockchip based SOCs have is, they have issues with drivers and firmware. So basicly you have to do a lot coding and building your own images and often needed stuff is only by reverse engineering. As you already said, you have issues with other provided images, that things dont work and only the android is working good. This means you have to add stuff and build your own linux kernel and that is way to much for the normal user. If the provided images from the manufactor dont even work with everything, how should a normal user get this stuff to work?

They're probably providing too many options. One or two Linux distributions (as well as android) with proper support would be better than a bunch of half supported options. That's always a problem with most of these Arm boarda. Even when it works, upgrading to a new version of the OS can be impossible.

oh man, don't confuse me, there's actually an Orange Pi 5 Pro coming out. It is Standard Size. 2 HDMI flat. with audio out in the middle, 40 GPIO, very much looks like a Pi 3B, with m.2 nvme, emmc, 1 ram stack, and has Wi-Fi built in, so in comparison I'd say the original pi 5 (which I have, is now crappy, the 5B not bad and preferred over the OG 5 caue of NVME gen 2 speeds. other than size. the 5B has Wi-Fi and emmc, with the same everything else. Then the 5 plus is my favorite, I do plan to buy 5x 16GB, and 5x 32GB to create my homelab. As well as having a 32GB as my own play toy. And then offering customers the pi 5 plus, pi 5B, Rock 5B, Rock 3B, as hub's for my security and automated home setup. Because of the huge wifi bandwidth, nvme and emmc storage. It'll create a home cloud, home lab, servers for games that don't have servers anymore, or you just want your own, your own cloud will be a result of how many external High capacity self powered drives you attach, or adding a NAS. as well as adding external drives, 256GB emmc wil be used for all security footage analyzes, and then (because of price, not brand) Orange Pi Zero 3's and Zero 2W's will be used as Wi-Fi extenders, MCU's for sensors and reactors, as well as an ESP NOW mesh, which will also report to the 1GB Zero 2W's outside, Zero 3's when inside, Every single piece of tevch used will have it's own 18650 battery pack that is triple the required amount for a week of use without charge, each battery pack if outdoors get's charged by 1.5 time recommended amount of panels and 5v Wind turbines. All of that stuff will get spaced out enough to be more camouflaged, but also be used for other stuff. There will be several human detection radar, PIR, Motion sensors, Laser trips, vibration sense, and lastly faciual recognition either through Milk V Duo or LuckFox - either just pico, or one of the higher ones, atm I have pico mini A and a Pico Max otw, the milk V is here but no camera, with the ESP32 cam's only turning on when 2/4 human sensing sensors gets tripped. There could be 4 more human detection sensors but 2 sensors tripped like human radar detector, and any other, vibration motion, thermal, all kinds.Each pi zero will not create a net or blanket mesh, bt a fingers mesh, where each line of zero's is setup that way to create faster transfers up and down that line. The ESP NOW Mesh will be a fall back, but will also be used for it's own video streaming to a zero or to the hub. Facial really matter s for next bit. If 3 sensors detect you and everyone else as being part of the homegroup. ie you all live there, recordings halt. Will also be testing the Ox64, and all other boards that are small and specialize in facial, or person recognition that can combine that data with the radar and every other sensor collected to ensure that the people we are ruling out as homegroup members - there will be no doubt. Thus saving power, saving saved space, less writes and rewrites means less maintenance, and a 1GB Orange Pi Zero 2W is 3$ more than a wifi extender here, it's slower, but that;s not what we care about in this instance,

GPU support is in any OS, if you have sufficient skils he takes 20min to compile the kernel with the GPU support. These are mainly boards for professionals if you are an amateur buy a Raspberry PI: you will get better experience out of the box with a very small knowledge.
@AdmV0rl0n
@AdmV0rl0n 7 ай бұрын
@@blender_wiki Valid. Except for one thing. This applies equally to images the vendor supplies with the board. So - if this is a slot where its only 20 minutes for a relative skilled person to compile a kernel with GPU support - then this should have been done from the start. So, take your snotty attitude, and your baseless point and jog on. My original point is as relevant right now, in exact response to your comment. This isn't 1990. There are no excuses for this if the GPU driver code is available and can simply be compiled, and put within an OS image on the vendor site. Nuff said.

Orange Pi 5 Plus boards are probably better fitted for NAS if an ASM1160 or JMB585 based SATA controller is plugged in the M2-M slot and this is nice to have a lot of RAM for a multipurpose server, but the 16 GB flavor would most probably suffice. The 2x2.5 GbE is indeed a must and WiFi is not required to my point of view for such board. I am currently setting up a NAS and surveillance station based on Radxa Rock 5B that does offer similar connectivity with a single 2.5 GbE port. The heart of these boards is the Rockchip 3588 SoC in any case, and You can expect decent performance in software RAID 5 for HDDs based arrays. At 2'20", please note there is a mistake in the SoC summary: the chip is RK3588 (Orange Pi 5 Plus flavors) and not RK3588S, which drops the 4 PCIe lanes M2-M key and relies on simple GbE (original Orange Pi 5 and Pi 5B flavors). So 'S' might stand for 'stripped' ;-) But I don't see much interest in this video, as the specific features of the Plus flavor are not tested at all, so the content here is just fine for the original RK3388S SoC based Pi 5 board as a multimedia and gaming alternative.

This definitely is the Orange Pi 5 Plus , The "Pro" version actually has DDR5 and from my experiments does not support any of my monitors that support DP/Alt :( The price is nearly identical for the PRO which IMO has only one major benefit besides power draw and that's the raspberry pi5 like form factor. The benefits of DDR5 vs DDR4 has been negligible as I own both at 16GB versions as DDR5 may negate any power draw benefits the pro version has under generous load conditions. I'll also mention that their official OS still doesn't support NVME boot right out of the box (At least for the pro version) which is unfortunate. All in all, tend to use the Plus version more often which may be because it's connected to the main TV in the house but who knows. Really appreciate your videos bro, theyve definitely saved me some time and money, no shade for the fact check though :P

You've confused the RAM with the eMMC socket. The total RAM is either 4GB/8GB/16GB (LPDDR4/4x) (16GB is the max) and the eMMC socket is either 32GB/64GB/256GB (256GB is the max for storage). eMMC (embedded MultiMediaCard) which is flash memory (like a USB thumb drive) is used to store the app/programs in a permanent way. RAM (Random Access Memory) is the temporary place an app/program is placed in after it is first opened up. This allows for quick access later when reopening. RAM is cleared when the device it turned off (and the app/program is placed back into the MicroSSD card or an M.2 drive before the system is powered down). The two terms are NOT interchangeable. eMMC (M.2 or MicroSSD etc) = permanent storage RAM = temporary storage

Currently using 16GB model with Ubuntu 20.04. and that is total mess like every Ubuntu based PC's. Ignoring general Ubuntu issues, there is one large problem, and that's is called - Mali. That damn GPU drivers are so broken that I have wasted months to get working basic 3d acceleration. There is no NPU support, no Vulcan, no support at all in any OSes, only in Android. If developers will be interested in platform, it can be optimized and start beating Apple M series but that's only in future, +6 years 😉 And some general changes need to be made how arm64 support is handled from community side.
