I definitely want to see this chip turned into an Android car stereo, with the right screen and the right amplifier. I know it may sound overkill, but when you're using the maps app, spotify, car park cameras and other stuff, many "cheap" devices may let you down, crash apps, get slow... I would love to see something like this but with more ports (like 2.5g eth, pcie 4x slot, etc, all of these are supported by that chip). Video drivers are kind of a big thing here, currently we don't have great drivers that really take advantage of that gpu. It took a long time for the RK3399 to get proper open source drivers working, this is going to take quite some time as well IMO. Maybe next year we get improvements and better boards with more I/O

@@linuxization4205 I can see your question though. Its completely valid. Why use an ARM based system when there are more powerful systems that can do it better? I am just looking out for my power bill since I would actually use it a lot. I game on my PC a lot, but I dont really need a top of the line PC when I can use a cheap system like this for emulation. The current issue with all RK3588s based boards is that they’re limited to using the Android aimed branched kernel that RockChip maintain that is (as far as I know) way behind mainline. This limits support for things like Vulkan and less optimised OpenGL support. Luckily it seems mainline is having support added, which will open the door for way better distributions.
@MrSlowestD16
@MrSlowestD16 Жыл бұрын
Can't be too far behind if it's running 22.04. You can't use an ancient kernel with the latest & greatest Ubuntu packages/libraries/etc., because eventually you'll run into issues, like some library uses some feature that doesn't exist in such an old kernel. EDIT: As for OGL and Vulkan. As long as the drivers are up to date an older kernel shouldn't matter. I'm guessing RockChip writes the driver. Really depends when they're updated for the performance of those things. If the driver is just as old as the kernel then yeah, might get annoying that you're behind. But if the driver is pretty modern, just on an old kernel? Still sounds like a good deal.
@Durandle
@Durandle Жыл бұрын
@@MrSlowestD16 They have, AFAIK, merged updates and patches, so it's technically not that far behind, but means it's also not entirely "up to date", and being closed source means it's a gamble as to what may or may not be there and work. Its annoying, I wish they'd just push their stuff to mainline, but seems there's a dedicated group of people doing it for them so it'll get there.

I'd love to see a full emulation video on Ubuntu for this. I hate Android for emu boxes because there's inevitably going to be some config tweaks required and it's just a lot easier to crack open a terminal and have full filesystem access and no ro partitions or sandboxing or anything of that nature. The tweaking is a lot easier on a normal Linux desktop, IMO. But generally out-of-the-box Android performance is better, so there's that... But that PS2 perf is quite nice. Curious how something like this would stack up against the Jetson Nano - you have one of those, don't you? The Jetson Nano isn't well supported anymore since the next revision is coming out next year.

Their website shows a rather sleek case with pogo pins. How do you get that? Does it come with the pro model? The website doesn't make it clear.

Such long time I'm waiting to get rk3588 based board (rock5B just keep being delayed). I would have jump into this one if it had provided a bit more I/O like M.2 ports: - one for adding NVMe because onboard storage is very small (32GB or 64GB): how do you manage to use as main desktop PC with that storage? - Ideally another M.2 ports for adding 4G modem and make it server + router desktop mini pc Hopefully more models should be available soon...

Youve probably considered a Mekotronics R58x. Why noy buy that?
@Etienne85
@Etienne85 Жыл бұрын
@@jhyog yeah had considered that one too. I probably dismissed because of slightly higher price ( 290$ vs 220$ in 16GB or 170$ in 8GB) and also powered from jack instead of USB-C. otherwise still a good alternative if not willing to wait for rock5b release.

Thank God they are starting to put proper installers on these things. The whole weird iso image processes that for some weird reason has become the standard is such a pain.

Once upon a time, everyone gave you disks, and on these discs were the installers of your operating systems. But then one day we all decided those discs were too big, took up too much space and were too slow, and it was cumbersome to buy more expensive disks, and burn them all the time. So we turned to USB and flash, But we needed something to be compatible with both, ISOs are the result.

Knowing how much you love small form factor and modern versions of single board computers would you be interested in doing a build using ISA, VL Bus, and PCI Intel and AMD based single board computers? Those will run DOS, Linux, Windows right out of the box. Plus you can connect them to passive back planes with up to 20 expansion slots on the board. Add any number of HDDs, SSDs, optical drives, expansion cards, etc.

Looks like you might be able to make a battery powered %60, to %75 form factor mechanical keyboard laptop out of this and several other components and mount the screen & speakers to the keyboard. I'd totally buy this although I'm an edge case. I want a battery powered mechanical keyboard laptop all in one unit. That said though a lot of people love traditional keyboards with the right advertising of it I think people are sick enough of the slim form factor stuff that does not perform well for certain tasks, meaning Glass touch screen and chiclet or island key laptop keyboards perform worse than your average %60 mechanical keyboard that seems to be about the right compromise between size and function. %40 are good too but not very common yet, and its the mouse area we're trying to save space on mostly so the bigger base of a 60 or 70 percent would help hold the screen up I believe.

You're probably stuck in Balanced Power Mode rather than Performance Power Mode. Had the same issue with Ubuntu I installed on an Asus cn60 Chromebox. Dropped frames at 1080p playback until after I made the change. Had to go command line to change it as the gui didn't offer me performance power mode.
