Awesome, comprehensive review! I’ve often wondered at the use case for this setup, but you’ve perfectly demonstrated that it’s for those places that are hard to position yourself otherwise. The velcro closure would be the main thing that would make me hesitate as it would collect seedheads and make critters/birds shy away from the “fraaaap” noise.

I’ve seen other reviews of this bag and everyone has been putting the tool-side down. No matter how tight those elastics are, that makes me nervous 😅. I wish it had the little mesh that zips over the tools like the Slate-mini. Since I am NOT a standing-sketcher/painter, I’m probably fine with the setups I have anyway (even though I like the idea of a size in between the field case and the Slate-mini). Honestly, if it had the mesh, I’d probably order it even if I don’t stand while doing art since I’m such a sucker for bags 😂. So glad to see someone else have my reaction to bees. I love bees (from a distance) and appreciate the work they do… just don’t come near me lol.
@SarahBurnsStudio6 ай бұрын
The loops are super tight especially if you put two tools in one. I usually put all my brushes in one so they are extra tight. But yea a mesh could be good. Maybe you could sew one on? There are probably lots of ways to mod it to suit you

I watched your Slate Mini videos over and over, and anyone else's I could find. I wanted it to be the set up for me, and so I bought one when my local art store was having their 25% off sale in October 2022. I have yet to use it (other than to dance around in front of the bedroom mirror, adjusting the straps 😳). This new one looks appealing because it's smaller, but perhaps too small... Thanks as always for sharing your wonderful content.

I do like the idea of a portable painting space. It seems both you and Teoh want to fill every loop and pocket, my current set up doesn't allow for that much gear. Maybe it would be less cumbersome with a little less gear or alternate means of carrying your water bottle.

I love the idea of the ETCHR slates, so much so that I purchased the larger one .. which I don’t use and have been trying to sell - I’m in Sydney Australia , I haven’t been able to find an etchr secondhand sales site (which is not good for me - but shows that people persevere with them !)

I’ve only used the big one which was super heavy, ridiculous even. The thing that bothered me most aside from weight, was accessing supplies was always a flip this way, flip that way. I hated it. Right now my favorite out and about sketching easel is my Stablo l’Original which is amazing. You have to check it out because it is difficult to explain. I love it. I tend to sit to paint. I just through it all in a small backpack with all my goodies. But I will never purchase another Etchr bag again.

I think I've seen the Stablo. I've also seen quite a few "DIY versions" and that's always tempting...but I already have so much setups haha
@deniseracine6788Ай бұрын
@@SarahBurnsStudioI use the Stablo inside my Etchr bags. I put velcro on the back of the Stablo so it can be attached anywhere inside the Etchr bags (I have all 3). It’s nice because it allows me to move the sketchbook higher and avoids neck strain. I haven’t seen any other KZbin channel suggest this combination so I am offering you this idea. It works amazingly well.

I watch your videos because I paint en plein air with egg tempera and the solutions provided for en plein air gouache work well for egg tempera. I adapted your setup "u.go pochade box (6"X8")" to egg tempera and I carry my brushes in Etchr's small "Field Case", carrying it as a shoulder strap allows me to have access to my tools. This Etrchr Nano looks interesting, too. I'm curious to see you use it in the long term. Thank you for sharing your experience.
@SarahBurnsStudio6 ай бұрын
I still have not tried egg tempera. It's permanent right? So do you have to scrape it off the palette after each session?
@evechabot6 ай бұрын
@@SarahBurnsStudio Egg tempera behaves a lot like gouache or watercolor on the palette. Besides, it's your idea for an airtight palette to keep the gouache wet that I use to bring my tempera outside. If not in the studio, I mix a small quantity of binder based on egg yolk and pigment at a time and store in small jars in the fridge. I use the palette to mix the colors, the small pots of paint placed around it, with more or less water depending on the layers to paint. I only clean it between each painting where I want to experiment with new pigments (I really like their story) or when returning to the studio for the u.go palette with a damp cloth and water.

oh interesting. I've always been tempted by etchr's slate but the price point put me off since i don't really do active plein air, and i didn't want to buy something so expensive without knowing if i'd get a decent amount of use out of it. Do you think at some point you could do a comparison between the nano and the slate?
@SarahBurnsStudio6 ай бұрын
The main difference (besides price) is that the Nano is much light, and doesn't hold as much stuff. So it's more practical as a 'stand and sketch' setup whereas the Slate mini I only used with my tripod.

Hullo Sarah, I have never been persuaded by any Etchr products. I find them overpriced and underperforming. I guess I am just cheap. I would rather make my own travel easel’s and palettes and shove my supplies into a messenger bag or an inexpensive backpack! I have not stood since I was 17 and I bring my chair everywhere I go, I truly have no choice in this.😊 I will bring up the circular ceramic palettes by Etchr. They are simply a waste of well everything! To small areas for paints, tiny mixing area, etc…… I have a friend that got one sent to her and yep, she dropped it the 2nd time she used it and felt that she could not rescue the paint, to many glass shards. So she lost the palette and her M.Graham paints on top of it! I believe that they must satisfy some artists or they would be out of business right? Nice video, I feel that you did a fair review, but I am not buying anything Etchr not even a sketchbook, yep, overpriced with suspect paper on poor bindings. I guess some people are just to hard to please. I never thought this was me, but perhaps it is, well with Etchr products anyway. Be safe take care and have yourself a lovely day.
