I am very new to water color at age 75. I followed along or tried to on painting number 2 on a post card scale size, was too small. I had the “ Let’s see what happens” experience. All is not lost, as I will do it again on a large watercolor paper. I went back in today and used ink to draw in the castle ruins. You are so very encouraging and love your videos, Update, I have a reminder note on my art desk by some famous artist, forgot who. It says “ Don’t wait for inspiration. It comes while one is working.”

That landscape... wow I got goosebumps even watching it on a computer screen. I also have these kind of moments when I am just so in awe of everything in front of me that I want to paint it, but also not miss it. However, the moments I paint are more vivid in my memory after and the more I paint on location the more I notice I start to take in the world differently even when I am not painting.

Yes TOTALLY agree. That is why I always feel the deep desire to paint on location, somedays are easier than others ☺️

So refreshing to see fellow “appreciate nature deeply types.” My poor family gets so tired of my comments on the way the sun hits a tree or whatever else! True to this video I think taking a class helps me get back into my flow state or back to painting in general. I get too hung up on what to paint or wanting too much for a painting to be perfect etc. I find taking a class cuts those things out until I can get back on track/winter ends. Amazing landscapes as per usual girl!!

Awesome vid! Next best thing to painting. I can def see why you must feel so much out there in Your Scotland. Your work was such a pleasure to watch- I am partial to Watercolor. You did capture those cotton candy clouds so well. It must have taken some time to figure out how to achieve that look. Well done & a joy to watch!! Thank you for sharing. You asked us to share about how to get in the “ flow state”: I call it getting into the zone. I have to put painting first. I have gotten into a daily habit of painting for a minimum of one hour every day and it seems that now I can just walk into the studio and get myself settled. Once I am in my chair, I start thinking about my painting and what it needs and I am there! It is much quicker because of the daily habit. Usually though I start thinking about my current painting beforehand while I am exercising. I take pics of my progression and look at the pics while walking if possible. Exercising beforehand helps to clear my mind.

Thanks Sarah for your video content Love your watercolour and gouache works. ❤❤❤ and sharing your travels in Scotland. So inspiring to me!! and others. I have problems with my hands so can't text much anymore. Used to paint water, sky, rocks, and trees in Ontario canada lakelands in acrylics but loved the outdoor studies the best. Was so inspired by short trip to Scotland years ago... so I am so relaxed and happy watching you on KZbin!!! Thanks again and take care of your health!! 😊❤

Good video for me Sarah!! You help relieve my guilt! I go down to my local beach most mornings to watch the sunrise.....and 'paint'. I never get to the paint stage but I do have 1000s of photos!!😂 I spend all my time mesmerised by the changing light, colours, cloud shapes, waves, textures emerging as the light spreads...etc that to take the time to paint would mean I miss out on the breathtaking!! All my painting happens at home afterwards. Your video means I'm not the only one! 😁 TFS!!

Hi, Sarah! I came across your channel looking for videos on creating your own palette, but noticed you were based in Scotland so had to keep watching other videos. I just made my first visit to Scotland a couple of weeks ago, and my life is forever changed. Your videos are gorgeously produced, so thoughtful, both in thinking about all nature has to offer us, as well as made me contemplate how painting truly is a way for us to reflect on the beautiful things of our world, and how we can be more whole and more human by simply noticing. Thank you for being you. I can’t wait to watch more! I am touched. Warmly, Ashleigh

So beautiful and flowing. Each painting makes me want to paint. Very inspiring. Thank you for sharing. I just get the paints out, put colors down and then doodle to what shapes I see in them. Sometimes I see flowers, animals, clouds, trees, etc. It helps with the neuro condition I have just seeing the flow of water, colour mixes and drawing neuro lines. Though passion is to be able to paint landscapes will get there eventually, for now, just love watching your amazing work and enjoy others who share your skills so unconditionally. Thank you. Very grateful 🙏

Thank you, Sarah! For me, the flow state comes when it comes. I can't explain what happens. But I do know when I am NOT in it. If I'm tired or painting because I have to or some such, I struggle so much more. But I'm trying to honor those times too. I think that's the hardest thing. Honoring my worst painting as much as my best.

So true! And it's OK to have the ups and downs, it ebbs and flows as they say. In times of 'ebb' I try to be patient and understand it's needed in order to rest my mind and think clearly - maybe that's just as important

Sarah, I know that you are building and managing a business. I know that the videos, photos and paintings are your bread and butter...but I truly hope that you can put all of them away from time to time and just "BE" all there and drink all of the beauty in for yourself, for Sarah. Sarah and Wolfie, holding each other and making beautiful memories and bringing them into your heart and allow them to heal you and equip you for your future. I truly believe that once an artist FEELS and EXPERIENCES and brings all of that beauty inside of them that their work is an overflow that comes bubbling forth from the heart. That is where the difference is between a very good painting and a masterpiece that takes the breath of the observer or client. Sending you my Love ❤️. Quiet

It's a constant struggle to find that balance. I always want to draw and paint what I see/feel but lately I feel the need to just BE in it. It fills my cup! And the painting comes later at the right time. Thankfully there are so many beautiful scenes here that I can always find my peace

Such beautiful footage of Scotland… as usual ❤. How can you not be inspired when you’re surrounded by scenery like that? I find I’m most inspired to paint during the winter if I spend some time with my previously taken photos and after deciding on a topic/set of pictures to use for guidance, then I create a cozy atmosphere for myself to paint. In the winter, I seem to “need” to make myself a lovely hot drink (something a little special…flavoured hot chocolate, cafe or tea latte, or a cappuccino) and have a sort of nesting space for painting. Then I’m set for ages and can get into the groove (until it’s time to make dinner for my family or help them find something that is right in front of them 😂). Since I started working from home a few years ago, I’m even more of a winter hibernator than I used to be 😂.

Sarah I agree I love to paint en plein air and Winters in Ohio are so gloomy. It’s hard just to sit in the studio and paint. This year I’m trying to embrace Winter. I made the house extra cozy. I have my inside grow system. The light for my plants are bright so I think the artificial lights are helping me as well. Plus growing veggies in the winter helps as well. I hope you planted some things inside as well. I remember you talking about it. Happy painting and looking forward to more of your inspirational videos. Hugs 🤗

Another spectacular video of enthusiasm, inspiration, & production of gorgeous artwork!!! I understand completely why you have the hard choices between painting & gathering references. When you’re inspiration is nature that’s what excites you along with the fact that it sometimes changes quickly. I have got the same issue here in North Mississippi with various seasons like you. 😊It’s a joy to watch how you experience it & take in all in to produce such wonderful memories & artwork. Enjoy your weekend & thanks for sharing your thoughts, knowledge about painting, & beautiful Scottish countryside adventures! 💕🫶🏻🥰

Your paintings make me feel relaxed and excited all at the same time. So beautiful! Living in the West Elk mountains of Colorado, I feel very lucky because I love to paint landscapes. To get into a flow state I just have to decide which mountain, which valley, which superbloom of wildflowers should I paint today? During the winter though, I just want to paint flowers for some reason.

It is so reaffirming to hear that someone as talented and successful as you has days where you don't want to paint because you fear nothing good will come of it. I feel that so often. I hardly ever create. I thought you said in a video a while back that you weren't going to sell prints much anymore. I am glad to see more available on your site now! I would love a print of the Lossiemouth Sunset and the one with the cool rock formation (didn't catch the name) paintings. The clouds are so enchanting! Thanks for your videos. I always enjoy them!

Beautiful as always, Sarah. Sometimes I just have to paint, even when I don't want to. But then, I'll somehow slip into my flow. Sometimes without even realizing it. But I can usually always get there in the cooler months here in Florida when I can finally get outside into nature. Thank you for today's video and happy holidays. 🎄🎁✏️📚🖌🎨🎅
