Thank you for this. I played this game about 15 years ago and I remember liking it but I have so little memory of it, so it was like it was being presented new again to me now.

My ex wife and I bought this when it came out. Very underrated story and some of the happenings actually got me to say, "wow" when they happened.

I think some things could be updated, like if it got re released on pc, showing a fake steam uninstall prompt or "deleting cloud save" would work just as well. fake gpu artifacts would definitely be scary.

You can disable the KB/M with code, make all the lights on the KB blink. Make your computer look like it's off. Only problem is it will look wrong on Linux for some things.

I can imagine some other modern tricks: Your character freezing and a fake "low battery" prompt popping up. (PC use the windows default device disconnected sound) Or something like "Your friend xǝl∀ is playing: uoᴉʇdnɹɹoɔ ɯǝʇsʎs ɹoɹɹƎ ". If they want to be extremely devilish, play something like the Discord notification sound.

I really loved Eternal Darkness when I played through it, but that was over a decade ago now. I'm glad to hear it still holds up!

This game really is in a league of its own. A remake would be amazing, I would be very curious to see how they would handle the "messing with you" mechanics on modern PCs and consoles.

It's funny, I actually managed to play through Eternal Darkness for the first time this year on livestream. And as much as I enjoyed it, I do have to wonder what a re-release would entail, especially given many of the era-specific Sanity Effects.

This game needs to be remastered for the Switch. Imagine how many other fourth wall breaking sanity effects you could put in. You could have the game automatically taking you back to the Home Screen and pretending to uninstall your game. Throwing in subtle hints of your gaming history on your console and maybe even creating disturbing versions of the images on your console’s gallery and flashing them on screen, imagine that. If this game gets a remake on the Switch I’m definitely playing it.

I always like to point this out but the weakness system in Eternal Darkness is basically Pokémon starter logic. Green->Blue->Red ->Green kinda funny how that plays out. Also the voice cast for this game is superb and carries a lot of this titles best moments.

Someone broke into our basement while we were playing this game, and me and the family friend thought the bumps and subtle sounds we were hearing was the game messing with us. Happened in Pinehurst, NC, dunno if the police report is public or not.

I played at least 5 times through that game. All four ends, and at least one of three normal ends twice. "This...can't...be..happening!!!" is still quote what I may use in some situations in real life.

I just started this game for the first time since it came out. Spent way too much money buying a physical copy and a Wii RVL-001 (since my GameCube died) all the while having to explain to my 11-year-old what the fuck any of this mess of wires and archaic hunks of plastic were. Totally worth it. This game (somehow) holds up!

Loved it so much back in the day, and it felt so unique, with so many other games copying directly from RE, SH, or just straightup Japanese horror movies. I think I'm okay with not seeing a sequel to this game, but it is really a shame it never saw a rerelease.

I ultimately voted action because of the two categories I'd put all of the horror games where you just run and hide into survival, and I dislike those kinds of games quite a lot. Anyway great review as always. Another one for the list™

As someone who bought a gamecube to finally get rid of the BSODs plagueing my PC diablo-playthroughs, the BSOD sanity effect in this game caused me to throw my gamecube against the wall in a fit of knee-jerk rage. As soon as I realised it was part of the game I bought a new cube. No game has ever fucked with my head as much as this one did, save perhaps Half-life Alyx's physics.

As someone who is also a big baby about horror games, this is the one I was able to play through. There's all of 1 jumpscare I can think of. So much more is about the atmosphere and the sanity effects. It's a great game.

If you want a introduction game maybe try Echo Night. Nitro Rad did a review of it and it doesn't seem like the scariest game although its still a horror game. I'm usually way too scared for horror games like RE7, but this game doesn't have jump scares (well maybe a few) it's more of a traditional type of horror that it really freaks you out to think about. I highly recommend this game. It's a must play for the GameCube like Metroid Prime. The experience is so good that it has to be experienced no matter your preference of game genre
