It's still so weird to me how Squeenix is handling their remasters. Not to imply the SaGa series doesn't deserve it, but I'd have assumed Final Fantasy would have received premium treatment, but no - the SaGa ports are where the majority of effort went for some reason. Odd. Cool! But odd. In any case, my attempts to get into the series continue with this one next, I suppose! Romancing SaGa 2 sent me running scared with its confusing systems. Hopefully I'll be able to wrap my head around this one! EDIT: Oh also - looking forward to your eventual Emerald Beyond review. From what I can tell even the SaGa fandom seems sort of divided on that game.

Thanks for the great review. Konami made many exploration-based games for the MSX long time before Metroid, like "Usas" for the MSX, thanks for pointing that out. I'm also looking forward to the official remake. Let's see If it ever comes to live. Blessings from Germany. 💛🙏

This review convinced me to give this game a chance, and I'm glad I did. Great experience, a Falcom hidden gem. Your channel has introduced me to a lot of games that got overlooked by most players, a shame also that the view count feels far too low relative to the review quality. Nevertheless, I appreciate the effort.

Tron is the only Megaman villain to be a hero! It's amazing to see a villain like her get a game and be a hero! She really is more fitting as a hero than antagonist! Lex Luther (hahahahahaha i know it's Loath) got his butt handed by a girl! Hope to see her in MVC4 as she missed out in MVCI

His opinion on the stratums are surprising to me, as most vets I've spoken to, mainly in the discord server and reddit, dislike the 3rd stratum the most of the EO4 stratums. Some say its the worst in the series lol. I don't think that, but its jarring to hear someone with the same experience say essentially the opposite. Of course, a tone of people started with EO3 so maybe thats the case. The similarities between EO2s 1st and EO4s 1st cant be overstated, but i also hate when people compare those two. Even down to the chord progression (Allegedly)

I know I'm 3 years late and you're probably over it, but I'm so happy to see your take on Memories vs. Dawn of Ys. I played most of these games in 2017 and 2018 and I have always been adamant about Dawn of Ys being my canon Ys IV. What you mention about Eldeel, how he is in Dawn of Ys and all the connections Dawn has to Ys Book 1 & 2 are so important. His connections to the goddesses and the black pearl being a major story element in both games and more. Memories the remake just slaughters all of that, and offers nothing in return, and now the fanbase seems to be in full agreement that it is the canon Ys IV. Most fans have also always felt that Mask of the Sun is the "canon" among the two older games and I see this thrown around so much around reddit and other sites. You mention it, and to be fair it is because Falcom themselves told us it was, but they and the fans don't go too far to mention how terrible Mask of the Sun actually is. Of course people can think of this like they want, but it is such a disservice to the Ys series that people skip over Dawn of Ys because Memories of Celceta is now THE canon Ys IV, when it is so mediocre, and even Mask of the Sun seems to be played more than Dawn. Ok, rant over... I just really like Dawn of Ys and what it did for the world building started by Book 1& 2.

I just started this game for the first time since it came out. Spent way too much money buying a physical copy and a Wii RVL-001 (since my GameCube died) all the while having to explain to my 11-year-old what the fuck any of this mess of wires and archaic hunks of plastic were. Totally worth it. This game (somehow) holds up!

I was one of the beta testers for the fan Japanese to English translation of Romancing Saga 3, which was excellent, and got Saga Frontier cheap for the PS1 a while later. I also had played Final Fantasy Legend 1 & 2, which had decent stories. Saga Frontier was an incredible disappointment that lacked story, direction, and when I played Aselus's story, stepping even once into the wrong screen could get an instant battle with one of the end of game bosses: Lion Princess at the start of the game mopped the floor with Aselus's purple blooded guts and caused instant anger-inducing game overs that made me roar like a lion! 😸 At least Aselus's boss battles had a boss theme other than the boring, normal battle theme when I played Riki's story. Other than that, the absolute worst part was the lack of any direction explaining what you needed to do to advance the otherwise non-existant story. At least the casino level could have been playable and the highlight // best part of the game like the similarly awful Final Fantasy 13-2. 😂

Event Rank is one of the most godawfully stupid mechanics I've ever seen in a video game. It's especially annoying if you're a 100% type who wants to do everything. No RPG should ever require you to avoid getting into combat, *ever.*

I like that this one doesn't have a strategy that feels like the way you should be playing, because in 1 it was mitigate as much damage as possible, in 2 it was hit faster and harder, 3 is the most debateable but i'd say it is buffing as much as possible then watching the big numbers, in 4 it seems to be status effects (not 100% sure because i didn't play 4) but for 5 I can't think of 1 strategy better than the rest

I passed this up for years in resale shops because I didn't get the jist of the gameplay from reading the box. That's wild now knowing exactly what it was about. Its hilarious they made a storyline like that back then as it was so straight up violent and sadistic and kinda nonsensical plot. Pretty creepy.

Interesting comment and I understand why you think that way, but I would disagree. I found Dragon Age Origins very cliche. I would have been a love letter to old fashion rpgs if it wasn’t released in 2009, which is still a bit during old fashion rpgs era. For me that game was only darker version of fantasy rpgs without anything else that would stand out. Now, DA2 for me was a great game. It was trying to tell more intimate, personal story, which i found easier to connect with. The story, about war refugee trying to have a new life, but no matter the choices or intentions it always ended up badly somehow (your example with protagonist sister shows that exactly). I felt like this is the dark dragon age I wanted from the beginning. I remember I wished they continued that in inquisition, but they decided to start with some green light from the sky…

Besides Mario Kart, F-Zero, Zelda and maybe a few others, this is probably the only SNES title I could still play. When this was new, there was nothing really like it in the US. It was so far ahead of it's time for 1990! It still holds up today. Underrated gem if there ever was one.

For anyone wondering about stones exp value the small ones are worth 1, the medium blue ones are worth 5, and the large purple ones are worth 10. It's important to note that while monster exp goes to the card that got the last hit in stone exp goes to every card in the deck and it can add up pretty quick over the course of a mission. Also after beating the main story you can go back to previous stages to get anything you missed and reexperience story bits you really liked.

One of the starter weapons gives you elemental attacks passive, the reason for that is because if you defeat skeletons with elemental attacks, they just die on first round, no need to wait for them to get up again. Also anyone having problems or glitches with the game you have to check your screen resolution and make sure it matches the game's settings in the settings executable file.

I could play an entire game centered around just the Mystic mechanic. I come back to Saga Frontier every couple years because the mechanics are just fun once you finally figure them out. Frontier is still my favorite in the series because of mystics. Minstrel Song is fun, but the hidden systems are overwhelming, and I really miss having other playable races. SF2 was too linear for my tastes

Man, I remember playing this one and while janky in a lot of places, this game was really punching above its weight. It's almost as if the PS1 hardware wasn't powerful enough to fully realize the vision of the game because the way the game is designed feels like the type of game that was common on the PS2(DMC, Chaos Legion, Onimusha, etc). At the time, you didn't see a lot of action games on the PS1 with this level of combat complexity.

I should finish Ys2 someday. I bought 1&2 for Steam and I got through #1 (the last boss is a major PITA though from what I recall) and I got like halfway through 2 and got sidetracked. I just finished Napishtim for the first time yesterday. I bought it for PS2 years ago, got up to the end dungeon and started grinding stuff but then I read that I missed a lot of missables (my major gripe about Ys games, is the GoneForevers that the game does NOT tell you about) and kinda didn't have the energy to start over to pick them up, and so I just let that game sit, bought it on Steam, but was discouraged when it was lacking the voice acting and optional dungeon... but finally finished it yesterday. Also started another Oath and SNES playthrough of 3... thinking sometime I should look up the other Ys games. I've never played 4, nor 7+.
