This was a great help as I'm trying to layout my linen closet. I envisioned doing the extra support just like you did so thank you for validating my thought for creating the brace from wood instead of buying a bracket to hold it. I have one question. Where the side shelf and the long back shelf come together, how did you support the side joins, or did you? In the video it looks like you had an extra support piece but I couldn't tell how it was done. Thanks for sharing! :)
@EternalHarvestDecor4 жыл бұрын
You are so welcome! this is a great question, I should have showed that a bit better in the video. I didn't add an extra 45 brace below the seam (but I think I should have) I just used a 1x4 underneath glued and nailed to each side. It was strong and maybe it would be over kill to add more but I think I would if I build them again, which I will. HAHA good luck!

Can I ask why you chose 45 degrees for your brackets? I imagine the angle should be changed according to the shelf's width but is there a way to calculate that or just trial and error?
@EternalHarvestDecor4 жыл бұрын
So the angle would stay the same but the length would change of the shelf was deeper. A 45° is the easiest to calculate and anytime I need a brace on a table, pergola or anything I throw in a 45. 😉 it it’s deeper then the board would just be a bit longer. Hope that makes sense

How did you support the left and right ends of the long shelves where they but up to the return shelves ? The ends aren’t resting on the cleats.
@EternalHarvestDecor4 жыл бұрын
So in the corner its easier because you can add cleats to 3 walls, so it is braced on 3 sides of the shelf where it buts up against the wall, if that makes sense. The long front shelf only had 2 cleats the wall at the left side and the long back wall, so it needed an extra cleat in the middle to add some extra support. Also because it was extra long I felt it needed something to brace the middle to prevent sagging. Hope that helps.
@mwpritchard13214 жыл бұрын
Hi. This is a great video--thank you for making it! Quick question: for the middle bracing, did you also fasten the molding to a stud? What do you do if (as I imagine is common) the stud isn't centered in the closet? Seems like it would look pretty bad off center... Thanks for any help!
@EternalHarvestDecor4 жыл бұрын
Great question and thanks for watching! I did not actually nail into any studs at all, the glue and nail into drywall is plenty. If you’re planning on loading the shelves with more heavy items I would do a vertical brace that attaches to the front from floor to ceiling. I added the braces mostly to prevent sagging since these are pretty long. Hope that helps!

For sure that particle board shelf is not going to last, and will bend and bow, and the fact you didn't run it all the way to the end, you'll be ripping that out in a couple years, if not already.... I would have bought 3/4 plywood and be done with it. You could then cut it as a U shape, and then add some softwood trim edging ending all the way to make it look pretty. The middle support makes it look like a 70's closet.
