ETES: MAN’s unique energy storage solution

With renewable energy on the increase, efficient storage solutions are needed to guarantee a safe and reliable energy supply. MAN Energy Solutions and ABB have developed a new energy management system - the only one able to store electricity, heat and cold at the same time and also distribute them to consumers.
There are numerous uses for the stored heat, it can be used for district heating, the food-processing industry, heating of public or commercial facilities, etc., whereas applications for the cold include cooling data-centres, process industry companies, facilities like shopping malls, university campus, harbors, etc.
The system is scalable, site-independent, has a very low environmental impact and can be tailor-made for specific applications. Turbomachinery units and the patented thermodynamic cycle represent the core technology and competence of the plant. ETES features MAN’s hermetically-sealed turbocompressor HOFIM™ within the charging cycle to compress the CO2 to its supercritical state at typically 140 bar and ca. 120°C.

Very promising technology! Where exactly on the storage spectrum would you put this technology: from peak-shaving to seasonal storage? And could you say something about the energy loss over time for the storage? Thank you!

The storage duration would be in the range of few days to about 2-3 weeks depending on the insulation of the storage tanks. The ETES system is foreseen to have one or two cycles (charging & discharging) per day. The energy loss is depending on the insulation and we are currently calculating with 0.8-1% per day of loss.

What is the cycle efficiency?

The ETES system is a 3 - way energy system and also supplies thermal energy in form of heat and cold as well as electricity. The COP (coefficient of performance) when heat and cold are used can reach more than 6. When talking purely about electrical cycle (electricity in, electricity out) the efficiency is 50%.

@@MAN-Energy-Solutions The efficiency of lithium-ion batteries is about 100 percent, and they have no moving parts and consist of very few components/ parts. You can produce heat with solar much more efficiently, and cold can be generated, for example, from earth or water, for higher efficiency. The efficiency of a PV panel is about 20 percent in the first place!!! Multiply this by 0.5, and you have 10 percent efficiency MAX! The efficiency of solar systems is about 8 times higher, if I'm not mistaken!!! Can you highlight the advantages of MAN's ETES compared to the abovementioned points? Power2Heat is a destructive technology, right? We should not transform electricity into a lower energy form. I'm working on a project in which sustainable biomass is the source of gas, electricity, heat, and biochar for soil enhancement and waste treatment. The produced gas can be used for multiple applications.
