Labored breaths and bed sores Sing it to me all day long When the aching sound of silence Used to be our favorite song You and me against the world You were my man and i your girl We had nothing except each other You were my whole world But then the day came And you were up and gone I still call home that house in Nebraska Where we found each other on a dirty mattress on the second floor Where the world was empty Save you and i Where you came and i laughed, and we left, and i cried Where you told me even if we died tonight, that i'd die yours These dirt roads are empty The ones we paved ourselves Your mama calls me sometimes To see if i'm doing well And i lie to her And say that i'm doing fine When really i'd kill myself To hold you one more time And it hurts to miss you But it's worse to know That i'm the reason You won't come home But i still call home that house in nebraska Where we found each other on a dirty mattress on the second floor Where the world was empty Save you and i Where you came and i laughed, and we left, and i cried Where you told me even if we died tonight, that i'd die yours You know, i still wait at the edge of town Praying straight to god that maybe, you'll come back around I cry every day, and the bottles make it worse Cause you were the only one i was never scared to tell i hurt And i found photographs of our school, on the day we met I thought that you were so beautiful, it was love i guess And you might never come back home, and i may never sleep at night But god i just hope you're doing fine out there, i just pray that you're all right I feel so alone I feel so alone out here And i feel so alone without you I feel so alone out here I feel so alone, i feel so alone I'm so alone out here Without you, baby

"Your mama calls me sometimes To see if i'm doing well" This line means so much to me. Many years ago (35+) I ended a relationship with a very nice lady. With the advent of Facebook we were both on the same old workplace group and we have become Facebook friends. It wasn't until after my Mum died a couple of years ago that my ex girlfriend said that she would miss the letters from my mum. It was nice to know that my mum thought highly of my ex, enough to keep in contact.

So for what it’s worth, I’m a 50 yr old bearded blue collar dude from Ohio who’s currently wearing a black metal band shirt... my point being... music is a beauty that can translate itself across perceptions... now, doing THAT to this compositional and emotive level is rare and special. This is ‘holy wow’ good. So is the new EP that I listened to twice today. Fucking standing O. Out of the park. A+ on the exam. Salutes from the bridge. Etceteras. I hope every single ounce of this potential is realized.

Your last sentence is what us earnest Ethel fans must help to realise and bring forth..Inshallah and Ethel-hu Akhbar!!! In an attempt to be serious, I would say that her subtle rhythmic , emphasising of lines and gliding and shifting the melody like she owns it(which she does …duh!) is heartbreakingly heartbreaking.

Glad I'm not the only 50+ yo old digging Ethel. I'm a father of three, ex commercial fisherman, for God's sakes. Ethel, Please don't ever stop making music. For us 50 yo blue collar dads, and anyone else with good taste.

As a late and middle aged adopter and neophyte of Ethel , she changed my ranking of previous loved (male)solo artists… and here we are thinking Leornard Cohen, Nick Drake, Geoff Buckley …she is in that class…but, to be hyperbolic, she is also unqualifyingly ‘better. It’s called progress.

This song makes me feel like a hole in my chest is growing, like a part of me a long time ago went through all this, my brain doesn't remember, but my whole being suffers listening to each lyric of this song, I feel her pain perfectly. I'm in a relationship which is perfectly fine, but this song makes me sore in anticipation of a breakup, I imagine listening to it on repeat, crying myself dehydrated and smoking a pack of cigarettes until my lungs are a gray mass. I love her so much and she loves me so much too and she makes me feel feelings I never had and I'm scared of losing her and this song makes me wonder about that loss.

My ex who I was completely infatuated with and in love with left to live on the west coast 6 years ago and didnt come back until two years ago. This song just spoke to my soul. God how I loved him, even though I knew the love he had for me was nothing but abuse. "Id kill myself to hold you one last time," "And it hurts to miss you But it's worse to know That i'm the reason You won't come home" holy fuck Ethel. You are such a god send for this song. Im engaged and planning a wedding with an amazing man now, but this song brought up so many lost emotions I felt moving on from him. what a masterpiece.
