Nikki, thank you so much for reacting to this I appreciate it. “Thoroughfare” isn’t the love song it appears to be. It is actually the beginning of the end for Ethel. Once you find out what lead to Ethel hitchhiking on the side of that thoroughfare in Texas and what happens to her after she gets picked up it is quite a sad song. As you found out when you did a little research, Ethel Cain is a fictional character that Hayden has created. Her album “Preacher’s Daughter” tells the heartbreaking and haunting story of Ethel in a timeline that plays out chronologically thru each song from the start to the finish of the album. Hayden wrote and produced the entire album herself. What I would love to see would be you doing a reaction to the entire album to get the full story of Ethel. Think that is something you’d be interested in doing?

I definitely would be interested in doing that. Sounds very unique and creative. I'll will for sure be doing more songs by her and I'll start with the Preacher's Daughter album and listen in the proper order so I can grasp the full story. Thank you for telling me about it!

The writing on Preacher’s Daughter is so well done it would make for a great book or a movie, in my opinion anyway. The storytelling in the songs paints everything out in the listener’s mind. I love watching people find out about Ethel Cain. She's a great artist, not many artists write and produce their own music these days. She's a gem and her concepts are so cool. She's making a hour and a half "EP" that has just 8 songs and one of the songs is 15 minutes long 😭she takes her sweet time and it's very creative. It's not fast paced or meant to be a trendy short songs. She has unique artistry and I love it so much

I think she'll always go by Ethel Cain (the daughter) however an album about the mother and the grandmother is in the work

I really enjoyed this, I heard traces of Lana Del Rey and just as you mentioned it, I was thinking exactly the same, she had a Delores from the Cranberries like warble in her vocals.."Anhedonia" if it's the same spelling, means an inability to feel pleasure, an unusual name..please check out Morning Star by King Woman, cool song, cool video

I know people who focus on songs as opposed to full albums probably get annoyed by the "you need to listen to the whole album" comments, and although you really do in this case, (it's a concept album, à la Pink Floyd's The Wall or The Who's Quadrophenia--Narrative,) I will just say, if I were to test someone's potential interest in the album with a single song, it would have probably have been "Family Tree" or "House In Nebraska." I think this song is one that can give a false impression of the rest of the album, (or even of the rest of her oeuvre.) In part, you have the issue of the narrator's reliability and of the placement on the album. Other songs from the album that might also be misleading, "Gibson Girl" & "American Teenager." I am glad you went with this live version, however. Anyway, please be sure to checkout more Ethel Cain. In fact, a new track was released not too long ago, "Punish," a song you might check out to see how stylistically diverse their catalog is. 🙏🏼😊 Godspeed

Thanks for telling me about that! Someone else said it's a concept album as well and that I really should listen to it in the proper order to understand that's it's not really as sweet of a song as it seems to be. 👀 I will add Punish to the list as well, thanks again! 😊
