I won't lie, I cry pretty easily when media gets emotional. There are a lot of She-Ra episodes that will reliably make me cry, but only a couple that will have me loudly sobbing. This is one probably the top one. Also, "It's time!" is one of the coolest, most....I don't know. Intense moments of the show.

Razz is one of the most fascinating characters in this show, because it seems like she actually phases through time. Like she’s glitched. There is definitely a metaphor for memory loss, but at the same time, Mara herself said in the hologram “Adora, are you there? Razz told me you’d be here.” Meaning information from the future got transferred to the past. This explains why she’s always so confused and her mind is so scrambled, because she’s literally having a conversation with two or more people across time and possibly space. I can’t help but wonder if this happened to her when Mara opened her portal. When Razz talked to Adora in the glitched timeline she said something about that happening before, and she “remember it just like yesterday- for madame Razz it WAS yesterday!” There’s so much unanswered there! If there was a glitched event like that (since she acknowledged the glitches as having happened before), I wonder if she helped control the portal and save the universe from deletion like Angela did. I wonder if her and Angela shared a similar fate but in separate places in the universe (or even multiverse?)
@darquidarqui
@darquidarqui Жыл бұрын
Yesss, the use of time in this episode is so brilliant, specially since it's so emotionally tied in with Razz as a character. And possibly! All the clues are there, looking back at the Portal episode, a lot of that episode just makes so so much more sense now. Woooah now THAT last thing is fascinating to think about! I mean... Angela is technically not fully gone but in an endless loop, and in a multiverse, she might be very much alive and reality just might be completely differeny. Wow this show.
@willowarkan2263
@willowarkan2263 5 ай бұрын
I wonder if her confusion is a byproduct of the syphoning of magic, the weakening of the ambient magic that is hurting the wildlife. At the end she seems a lot more lucid when she realizes the magic is free and Mara's ultimate goal finally fulfilled. Razz seems to be a highly magical being, so perhaps her experience of nonlinear time is more stable if the magic is no longer hamstrung.

Goddess a series about Mara's doomed heroine's journey would be amazing, watching the moments of happiness with Light Hope, with the friends of Mara, all while the tragedy coming looming over it. The melancholy of it would be heartbreakingly beautiful.

Just a weapon. Throughout all her live Adora had been told she just a weapon. First by the horde as she grows up. Then the slow destruction of her and Glimmer relationship throughout s4 making Adora think she just viewed as a weapon from Glimmer and the rebellion. And now this. How her special destiny that light hope keep telling her about just turns out to be used as a key for a weapon as well. part of Adora has to wonder if that all she is. A weapon.
@darquidarqui
@darquidarqui Жыл бұрын
You're so right. It just completely dehumanizes her and no wonder Adora has such a hard time coping with herself and the one identity she felt more comfort with, more empowered like the She-Ra one? Completely shattered to pieces. Too much to take in, this weapon comment is gold!
@willowarkan2263

It makes Catra finally helping her deconstruct that in season 5 even better. Like that is Adora's key trauma, she feels she is both an instrument and sole responsible for everyone's problems.

word trauma with the word “promise” is so real, i can never hear that word normally again. mara has such a beautifully tragic story. i adore her look with the exception of her hair. i wish they didn’t make her blonde when she transformed into she-ra. there have been fan edits with her keeping her natural hair color and they look gorgeous!

Yep, I can't hear the word "promise" normally anymore, recently watched The Last of Us and the mention of that word just immediately brought the trauma back lol. Ohhh I can see that! I mean, another possible interpretation is that it makes her blonde as well because it's not really Mara herself? I know it doesn't apply to Adora cuz she's blonde lol but I totally get that, I mean, the She-Ra persona is originally blonde, but I can totally see why they could've done something differently!

This is one of those rare episodes of any show that stick with me. Like episode 9 of Arcane or the View From Half Way Down it just took an emotional toll on me. Let's go! Best episode of She-Ra I think for me altogether, and definitely one that's up there with episodes of other series you mentioned. I think what makes this so gut-wrenching (for me at least) is that up until this point, we've been told three things that seem somewhat unshakeable: Mara messed up, went mad, was an unworthy hero, and the current situation is her fault / the sword is what makes She-Ra who she is and gives her power / Razz is just a nutty old lady in the woods. In one episode, you shatter all of that. Like, if the viewer keeps up with the clues (like you do brilliantly), they're already a little suspicious about the First Ones, but the rest is still kind of a huge shocker. What stood out for me most this episode is as you said the character writing, but also the goddamn acting. Everyone did a brilliant job, and I think none more than Grey Griffin (who once again proves that she can play anything at all). Her voice acting, on top of everything else, is what ended up making me cry at the very last shot of that damn pie. Just incredible. Also, quick note: I loved your comparison to Princess Mononoke (one of my absolute favourite animated films, and films in general, of all time), because I think those scenes are very inspired by it and its core message: love and nature and humanity are intertwined, and all can lift each other up with the right harmony and respect. Anyway, this was a heart-breaker and an eye-opener of an episode, and I can't wait to see how you feel about this major shift going forward! Thanks as always for your incredibly in-depth discussions, and just for being such an open person! Lots of people play their emotions up for views (or tone them down out of fear of appearing "weak" or other bullshit), but as always you wear them on your sleeve, and it's a breath of fresh air. Thank fuck there's no character limit in KZbin comments (if there is, it hasn't found a way to stop me yet lmao). I wish you an awesome Monday! Catch you next time 🤘

WHAT A MASTERPIECE, love it so much, still thinking about it. Yesss, love love love how it's all turned around and everything is thrown to your face in such a beautifully tragic way, like, it's THE MANNER in which all is revealed, so emotional. She's so goddamn talented, love her performance here, so pure. Those last lines are delivered perfectly. YESSS Princess Mononoke rules! My favorite animated movie ever actually, top 5 of all time in general 💖 super reminiscent of that, loved every second of it. Oh, CAN'T WAIT to get deeper and show you the reaction! Everything you see on camera is me being me (with a bit of filter because KZbin reasons haha), and you haven't even seen the full uncut version though lol. Thank you 💖 Hope you're having good days! It's funny back when it started airing assholes complained how they are destroying the franchise, the kind of dudes that likely barely even knew the show existed, yet the show creators clearly knew the original enough to put in loads of little nods and in jokes. Mind i never watched the original either, it's from before my time and 80s stuff is a bit rough to watch. Though people who complained that the reboot is too queer, i've seen enough of the blatant homoeroticism of the male characters in the original shows, it's barely more subtle than Xena is for sapphics.

It seem's you've figured it out, but yeah, the First Ones were not "first" by any measure. Also, I don't think this is confirmed, but it's been theorized that one of the functions of the Sword was to prevent the planet from choosing anyone as She-Ra except for a First One.
@darquidarqui
@darquidarqui Жыл бұрын
Yep, even the name of them it's a lie, Razz and the rest of creatures were the true OGs here. Hmmm that's really interesting and it makes sense since the sword is made by them for a very specific purpose, it's all a manufactured destiny

I really loved Mara's drama in this episode and season, but I felt that the show intentionally hid deeper information about first one. Desperate times call for desperate measures, you know? Show keep hints us about conflict between horde and first one, but did not put it directly in the story. Many says they were same as the horde, colonized planets and used brutal force against innocents, but fundamentally, they had heart, too. You can see their glimpse of humanity in s2 e3 'Signals'. Mara's friends and even herself, were the first one. Perhaps their only fault was the impatience of being buried in the 'single mind' and 'perfect and clear solution' as horde prime likes to think of no other possibility. But essentially there was hope for them.
@darquidarqui
@darquidarqui Жыл бұрын
Even though there were glimpses of bright humanity like in the Signals episode, the measures here were so incredibly dark and catastrophic that the last image of the First Ones is inevitably quite negative. In fact, I think it speaks a lot about the downfall of the First Ones as a civilization and showing two sides that are heartbreaking to see together: the innocent and lively one like that girl dancing in Signals episode, versus the monstrous manufactured plan in the figure of Light Hope's programming. It's quite fascinating to see how much dimension the First Ones have with little information in comparison to the Horde and all
