Ethiopia's Renaissance dam: has diplomacy failed? | Inside Story

It'll be one of the largest dams in the world when complete, providing water for millions of Ethiopians.
But downstream from Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan say they'll suffer.
And despite many rounds of negotiations, the countries can't agree a deal.
The African Union has, for months, tried to mediate between the three.
But despite its efforts, the dispute about Addis Ababa's construction of a giant hydroelectric dam on the Blue Nile, remains unresolved.
Cairo and Khartoum say the issue could threaten peace and security in the region, and asked the UN security council to intervene before the situation escalates.
But the French envoy to the UN says the world body lacks the legal expertise and there is little it can do.
He's called on the three countries to go back to the negotiating table
But will they?
And if not, what's next?
A military confrontation?

They can innovate and create alternative sources atleast for utilities. If they consider the fertile soil that Ethiopia is being ripped off as valuable for Egyptian farmers. Then the only solution I see is to remove the boundaries and create a three country confedaration in East Africa via agreement. By this the Nationalism problem and hot headedness might cool down. Kindly note that some weeks ago the foreign minister of Egypt confirmed that feeling the dam won't cause problem to Egypt. It seems the motive behind all the disagreement from downstream countries is more of political reason. Upstream Ethiopia in the long run will be economically stronger and its influence in the region would increase. That is the main reason the two down stream countries are fighting for. But, the dam will be filled as construction is completed. Armed conflict should not be an option remember that there are dams down stream from the new dam site. Armed intervention would not be in the interest of all.
