On Monday, Ethiopia signed a deal with Somaliland, a region within Somalia, for access to a port on the Red Sea. This deal didn't go down well with Somalia, accusing Ethiopia of endangering peace of the region. But nonetheless, Ethiopia is persistent; so in this video, we're going to take a look at Somaliland, the new deal, and what might happen next.

CORRECTION: At 2:20, we say 'Italian Somaliland has a population roughly eight times that of British Somaliland'. As the numbers shown demonstrate, this isn't true: today, Somalia (excluding Somaliland) has a population roughly 4 times that of Somaliland. We meant to say 'Italian Somaliland HAD [at independence] a population roughly eight times that of British Somaliland' (inferred from the fact that there were 80,000 voters in the 1960 British Somaliland elections, compared to 600,000 in the 1956 Italian Somaliland elections (source: africanelections.tripod.com/so.html#1961_Constitutional_Referendum)). We hope you nonetheless enjoyed the video!

You also mistook the SNM (The Somaliland militia before 1991) with the USC (Rebel alliance against Siad Barre in southern Somalia) which later fractured into the SNA. The SNM only fought the remnants of Siad Barre's regime in Northern Somalia and only gave the USC food aid, they never fought in Mogadishu. Also forgot to mention the current Las Anod conflict which sees unionist fight Somaliland because they dont want to be apart of it, the mediation and neutral stance Abiy took on the conflict, as well as the 2006 Ethiopian Intervention in Somalia which was largely a failure because it saw them installing the ICU leader they fought to remove All in all, I believe this info report did a insufficient job reporting on this news since it wasnt objective enough coming from british guys. When reporting on volatile areas like the Balkans and East Africa you have to do research or else you could ignite ethno-religious comment sections. This further complicates the orientalism towards Somalia as foreign voices try to make sense out of realpolitik. This is a diplomatic lease deal. Ethiopia is trying to gain port access to trade, not to kill people. Africa is still poor because we would rather block each other than grow together. We live in a global world now, where open trade is key for development. Look at Europe, after WWII they realized centuries of fighting each other was stupid. Instead, they began to work together, forming economic unions. Africa on the other hand, we are still stuck in our backwards mindset. Our people are POOR! We need to move FORWARD!

I would've agreed with you in early 2023, but somaliland has since experienced a civil war which expanded into a regional war with the puntland state of somalia. It's a deeply unpopular war from a deeply unpopular president who has overstayed his allotted time. Both the war and now this senseless "deal" with Ethiopia are seen as methods to extend his illegal presidency and legitimise his rule. Our weak democracy has already slid firmly into authoritarianism. We are no longer stable, and a deal like this shows a future truly independent somaliland will be a satellite state of Ethiopia, which is a fate worse than death for somali nationalism.

@@Lala-kc2fw Ethiopia becomes stronger and backs away from Somaliland’s coast steadily as they themselves gain power. I understand that tribalism in the region is due to a vast history (literally the oldest in the world) and people taking great pride in it. But we have to accept change. Ethiopians were only able to defeat Italy because they had upgraded weapons from their predecessors. As much as I hate the unspoken motto “Always Forward” with how the west treats technology (especially in war, but also in political alliances), I think it’s one that must be adopted to compete on a global stage. There’s no point half-a$$ing being a superpower. Like, make your own weapons and defend your region or be a peaceful state. Neighboring countries can choose to join the wagon or get ran-through. Honestly, you've completely ignored the outrage in Somali-land over this deal in the public eyes. The Somali people have a history of conflict with Ethiopia, dating back to the era of Milasanawi. This conflict played a pivotal role in the separation of Somalia and Somali-land. The current deal, which involves exchanging a port for a stake in an airline, has sparked a divided opinion among the Somali-land population. Many are taking to the streets to discuss this and essentially trash on the "stupid" president (they were using less polite words; stating that recognition is not enough reason to put an "enemy and expansionist" group on Somali-land. Some still feel it's worth it though which has caused this divide, expressing their concerns about surrendering a port for a 50-year lease, coupled with the presence of a seemingly permanent military force. They fear a scenario akin to becoming the "new Palestine." (something an interviewee said that stuck with me). Moreover, the influx of Ethiopian tribes, particularly the Oromos, into the region is met with disapproval. The Somali-land people are wary of these demographic changes. They were claiming that the Oromos "claim the Somali-land is theirs" (I don't know how true this is, but this is the sentiment in Somali-land on how they view the Ethiopians" they are weary of their expansionist nature. I mean we just have to look at what they constantly do with Eritrea to believe this. In addition, as mentioned in a previous video, not all clans in Somaliland are supportive of it becoming an official state. They tolerate the current status quo until the prospect of recognition becomes more realistic for the present governing tribe in the area. However, this tribe does not have full control over all of Somaliland, particularly the areas to the north east, essentially making it hard for Somali-land to be independent is it's a small region in the middle- if those tribes reject the actual prospect leading to internal strife and violence in Somali-land. So Ethiopia is boiling tensions in Somali-land itself. Additionally, The disagreement over whether Somaliland should separate from Somalia is evident in the growing tensions and violence against tribes that resist being ruled by the dominant tribe in Somali-land. It's crucial to note that East African politics is deeply rooted in tribal dynamics, a facet that was not covered in your video. Also "somalian" is not a word, it would be "Somali territory" For people wondering how likely Mainland Somalia is to get involved- Unlikely. The president is focused on growth and is currently fighting Al-shabab (funded by foreign interests) that are still comiting terroristic actions and have been hard to counter- who constantly bomb any areas that are beneficial to the country.

@@AdastraRecordings no one's afraid of messing with Eritrea bc of its' reservists. this deal with Somali-land was simply the only way to do things without Ethiopia physically initiating a war. that's the thing Ethiopia is scared of bc if it initiates a war, it won't survive the sanctions put on it by international powers and Egypt (which has other problems with Ethiopia) would take full advantage and help Eritrea wage war on Ethiopia and it would go unchecked bc of Ethiopia initiating the war. no one is scared of Eritrea by itself, the other powers that will help Eritrea though are definitely too strong to unnecessarily provoke.

Might have been a good idea to thrown in something about Djibouti having been the default port for Ethiopia largely due to the stability and protection they get out of that location. It's expensive, but the US has a large base there and the Djiboutian economy is dependent on trade from Ethiopia. I don't know if Somaliland is the way forward, it would make geopolitical sense to find something they have more control over, but with an easy, zero-conflict solution still there and Ethiopia having a vastly superior military, I doubt anyone is in a rush to really start a war over it.

Ethiopia will need a port one way or another. No true leader will allow his people to be poor just to preserve the norm made by westerners anymore. Somaliland is actually more like a thing of their own than Somalia and I went there years ago. One is a rather well to do by African standard back then. Another is complete broken. One has coastguard. Another has pirate. Ethiopia was quite nice too. Great tea, by the way. Wish I've bought more. Good coffee, although they make it like their people, black and strong - that's a compliment. I'd say Somalia is pretty broken anyway. What's the actual price to way of a war between Ethiopia and it's neighbor in this case? I mean, Ethiopia can, if they want to, break Somalia and get a port that way too but it'll not be a smart way to go about it.

@@mo85710 I'm talking about "nation-state". In a nation-state, we don't see a country by their ethnicity. We see it by the shared values, visions, aspirations and history. Countries could be heterogeneous or homogeneous. For example, Nigeria, South Africa, Indonesia, Brazil, etc., they are populated by ethnically diverse people. But most of their peope would say "I'm Indonesian" first before they say their ethnicity. And there are also countries that have same ethnicity but they choose to separate or remain separated because they don't feel connected politically even though they share the same ethnicity or culture. For example, China-Taiwan, San Marino-Italy, Kosovo-Albania, Samoa-American Samoa, etc.. So, if you're highlighting me comparing Somalia and Sudan, it is still relevant because I'm talking about self-determination for those who want independence after series of dialogue had failed.

We don't live back in older days, when we been told Ethiopian are bad. I want to live peace and prosperity with my neighbours. I don't want to alienate my Somali brothers too. Whats good for me is good for them too. My final word is Somaliland is OPEN for business.

Facts: 1. Somaliland was an independent country on 26 June 1960 after it got its independence from Britain. 2. They voluntarily joined with the now failed country of Somalia, in order to realise the dream of “The greater Somalia”which includes the current independent country of Djibouti and the Somali regions in Ethiopia and Kenya. But that has failed. 3. That union resulted the genocide in Somaliland regions back in 1988 which happened after the former dictatorial regime,of Siad Barre, aerially bombarded the major cities in Somaliland, which has resulted the killings of more than 200 thousand civilians. 4. Somaliland re-declared its lost independence on 18 May 1991 and since then enjoyed so much success such as the peaceful and democratic transfer of power, building a reliable system of governance, its own army, currency, flag, passport and etc. 5. Ethiopia is set to become the first country to extend that long awaited and deserved recognition to the Republic of Somaliland after this agreement is implemented.

Somaliland's pursuit of recognition and ties with Ethiopia, fueled by past assistance, aligns with Ethiopia's BRICS involvement. Avoiding Epstein list associations may enhance international recognition. Challenges arise from Somalia's opposition, driven by historical conflict and external influences. Somalia's complex dynamics complicate Somaliland's path to independence despite three decades post-civil war.

Lack of sea access is a serious issue. It doesn't matter what you feel how the world works. Port access is vital for advanced economies. You can count on a single hand the countries that are advanced without access. Also, who decides who is a country? The European powers at the end of WW2? Can borders never change? If violating the integrity of a country are hostile acts, does that make rebellions and independence movements violate integrity of a country? Do the Kurds no longer deserve a state? Do the Palestinians no longer deserve a state? After all they are violating the integrity of a country. @@filipe5722

Hahahaha you guys keep surprise me... You might but Shabia isn't Happy. They were hoping that we would start a war and convinced you and many others through Propaganda...the fact is Abiy or Ethiopia in general never thought of invading Ertria. Now I can assure you that Shabia will attack Ethiopia and in response Ethiopia will take its own Port. Ertria independence wasn't Ertrian agenda by nature , because Ertria can't be a functional state without Ethiopia. If Isayas choose not to attack it will mean that Ertria accept the current economic and political situation (which is unbearable for any human being) will continue so it will become a failed state...if he attack as we all know he will lose and this time he will lose everything...Meaning...Ertrian future at this point in time is at a cross road..and is doomed to fail as a state... He can be wise and take the 3rd option...

It will come after Eritrea. That's inevitable. Most Ethiopians don't respect Eritrean independence and territorial integrity. Especially since Eritrea's separation resulted in Ethiopia being the largest landlocked country in the world. Also their population is growing avd will continue to grow at an exponential rate while Eritrea has long been in demographic and economic decline under the despotic order. Eritrea has no future and can only secure safety through isolation and inactivity. More Eritrean want to flee their own country than stay because there is no individual freedoms and economic opportunities. You are a typical Eritrean. Quick to celebrate when tensions mitigate.
