Much like people from Mexico are surprised to find African DNA. Of course in Mexico they aren't but in the U.S. people seem unaware that Spain was conquered and raped for 700 years by the Moors. That tends to leave a mark. Spain does the same to Mexico and here I am. Chinese tried to conquer Mongolia only to get their behinds kicked, hard. So they built a wall. Still, lots of admixture. That's basically how it is in Europe though 😅 it's possible to trace back to 17th century, but before that it's harder and you need to be lucky. Because of the reformation, and the 30 years war and all the wars before (like the 100 years war) a lot of parish registers are not existing anymore or they just didn't have it before. So it's not possible to find a record before that. But everything after 1600 isn't that much of a problem to trace back because of parish registers and comunal registers and court books. Of course if you don't know which region or town your ancestors came from it will be difficult.

I guess Europeans, especially from small villages can "trace" their ancestry back way more but the people from the Americas are only able to "trace" back to the 1900s. I say trace with quotation marks because back then (and even until recently) families would take in children left on the streets without actually adopting them or wouldn't register their childrens/register them years after they were born so it's really all mixed up.

Brazil's population is mixed (though to what degree is scientifically contested). While the original three populations were Amazonian, West African, and Portuguese (notably, part of this group consisted of Sephardic Jews forced to convert of Christianity), Brazil later saw influxes of Germans, Italians, more Portuguese, Spaniards, Austrians, Poles, Ukrainians, Russians, French, and Dutch, Hungarians, and Ashkenazi Jews. More recently, Brazil received a flood of Japanese, other Asian, and Arab (Lebanese and Syrian) immigrants. The Brazilian Jewish community is very tightly knit and consists mostly of Ashkenazi Jews. They live mostly in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Curitiba, Brasíla, Belo Horizonte, and Recife.

Possibly because he himself (as with many people) views being Jewish as having that as a religion only. The Cohen / Kohen / Kohn gene is one marker that I know of that is indicative of Jewish ancestry. It is carried by people whose ancestors were of a priestly caste of Jews.

I wonder why people with Iberian DNA also are shown to have some Ashkenazi Jew DNA when if fact the Iberian Jews that either had to convert or flee were Sephardic Jew. Probably the test can't distinguish between Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jews, so they are put in the same "basket" as the Ashkenazi Jews.
