Etho, I know you say you haven’t been able to put out as many videos but honestly you’ve been doing really well considering your situation that you mentioned. Losing a parent is probably one of the hardest, if not the hardest thing that can happen. Especially if you lose them far too “soon” (losing them at any time is very difficult though). The fact that you’re able to continue as well as help your family is so commendable. I also lost recently my dad a few months before you did (far too “soon” as well), and it’s a very difficult circumstance. Please don’t feel pressured from viewers to make more videos if you need to help your mom out or if you need a break as well (it seems like you aren’t which is good). The pain never goes away but it does lessen with time and support from family and friends. Thank you for your videos, I really appreciate them! Anyways, to not be so deep, I have a random question: Have you touched anything to do with VR yet? Is it something that interests you? If you have tried VR games, what do you think about it?

Personally I love villagers because they make building large projects so much easier but I definitely agree that they aren't the most fun mechanic. If I were able to change it, I would make the villager system more akin to Terraria where each villager needs a room with certain requirements before he's willing to trade with you. For example, maybe each villager needs a room with at least 5 x 5 floor space, a bed, a chest and his workstation. Obviously some people would just build tiny boring boxes to get their trades but this system would encourage people to build individual houses for each villager, which would take more time but would be much more fun. To expand upon the idea, you could have it so each villager has slightly different requirements for their room before their willing to trade (which you would be able to check by clicking on the villager, replacing the trade menu until they have a house) which would again encourage some more creativity when making trading halls. This system might not work at all, and it would certainly be difficult to code for a game like minecraft but I think it would be a fun idea that encourages more creativity when dealing with villagers than sticking them in a 1 x 1 x 2 hole.

I think villagers are fine UNTIL you start chaining systems together. If you just roamed from village to village trading with what you have on you at the time, I think they are perfectly fine. It's when you start to setup massive reed farms for paper and whatnot, that's when I think Villagers start to enter the realm of "OP". If they want to try and balance them out a bit, they'd have to address that further than how they have already.

Hi Etho! Little tidbit you don't seem to know: Villagers pathfind to higher blocks. That's why they all were very happy to jump over the wall but didn't jump down a hole. I think it's so they try to pathfind out of caves. Whenever I want villagers to go somewhere I just make the path end with a single block up and they go there on their own. I think it's also why the villager was happy to get into the system on his own! He figured he could get higher up using the water stream!

Secondly add a "happyness" measurement to villagers, which goes up if they're walking around, chatting with other villagers, smelling flowers, looking at paintings, etc. Basically incentivizing players to make a "functional" village to get good trades.

The segment in the start made me recall a thought I had recently when I started playing in a new world: Minecraft actually has a really fun combat system. The thing is, I've never really thought much about it. I've taken it for granted, yeah you hit enemies with a sword, they die, how much more is there really to it? But as I started my new world recently, I realized just how many different types of encounters you can have, and how there are always so many different ways to go about "solving" them. One time I encountered 2 skeletons, 1 zombie and 1 creeper. Not an unusual thing. But there are so many things you have to consider while fightning them: Don't get too close to the creeper, don't stand still letting the zombie catch up, keep sidestepping the skeleton's arrows, all while navigating the terrain you currently happen to be in. How do you go about killing them? Do you take the skeletons first? Do you try to make them shoot eachother? Do you go for the creeper first, as its the potentially most dangerous enemy? The zombie because it is closest? Do you try to get a music disc off the creeper? The variety of what mob combination you encounter, in combination with the variety of environments you could be fightning them in, means that every single fight is different, and will require a slightly different approach than the last one. And the best part of it, you feel like you're totally in control of your character during any of these fights. It's quick and snappy, there are no 2 second long animations to swing your sword. You can use special tools like, blocks, bows, water, ender pearls, potions etc. if you feel like that is what is required in the moment. Since you have so much control in any given moment, you really "should" be able to handle any situation, but how well do you actually do it? This means that there is potentially a really high skill ceiling, there is probably always something you could do to fight more "efficiently". On the other hand, you don't have to do every fight in the most "efficient" way. As long as you survive, you're fine. This means that the skill floor is also relatively low, I don't think many would consider minecraft combat to be especially "difficult". I think this is a good thing, most people can figure out how to kill a zombie, but when put in more complicated situations, one might need to be a bit more careful, or have more experience with how to deal with those types of encounters. Anyways just some thoughts I've had recently and wanted to share. Do you agree, or am I overanalyzing this and giving too much credit?

If I remember correctly, the change for zombie villagers where they don't despawn if they've been converted from villagers only applied to villagers with jobs and locked in trades. So if you're cure cycling them and you haven't traded with them yet, they can despawn. This is to make sure that zombie villagers you don't know about don't take up the hostile mob cap or cause lag, say from a village you're next to. You know, the funny thing is I'm pretty sure I learned that from you a long time ago when they made the change lol. I could be wrong, I can't remember for sure.

Etho!! So I love all the new bands you're listening to! Fun fact: The Pretty Reckless? The singer is the little girl from the Jim Carey The Grinch movie from years ago! Another couple you might like are Gin Wigmore and Elle King. Elle's got a cool parentage too.

Villager design fix: Supply & Demand. Whenever you buy something from a villager, the cost to you for that item(s) goes up. Across all villagers. And the higher you push it, the longer it takes to come back down. So if you "buy out the market", it becomes a less appealing way to do it. That way villagers are still great for a splash of resources when needed, but the more you rely on it the better the proposition of adventuring yourself becomes. It would create a natural game cycle, like what day/night used to be with day being for building and surface stuff while night was ideal for mining. Edit: I originally had an aside here to cater to the "big number go up" types, but frankly on reconsideration my enjoyment of the game is so different from that perspective that I can't offer a good pitch for that. I'll leave that to others. Instead I'll use the space for an example of how to do it - multiplier. Say the first 32 redstone is at normal price. At a stack in a short span, apply a 1.15x multiplier to the price. At two stacks, 1.25x. At three stacks, 1.5. At a chest worth, 10x. And so on. Then the higher your multiplier, the longer it takes to degrade. Change the numbers for balance, of course. Just example numbers.

Hey Etho, just a tip with villagers. While you can cure them more than 5 times to reduce prices, these are not permanent discounts, as they only remember up to 5 cures per mentally. After a certain amount of time, the trade prices will go back up. Also, you may run into the issue where villagers stand on the thin part of the trapdoor that still has a hit box while open, and you’ll get two villagers in one storage unit. The water system should help them to separate out, but just something to keep in mind
@satchmo0062 жыл бұрын
repeated trades in quick succession will bring the villager trade prices up (supply/demand) but leaving them alone for a period of time will allow the prices to drop back down to the lowest prices again. It's a good idea to have MANY villagers of the same type to avoid the increase in prices after trading many times quickly with just a few villagers.

The trapdoor issue could perhaps be fixed by replacing them with fence gates

The villager falling made me laugh so hard i remember when you tried to make the nether village like a hundred moons ago where you accidentally made one of them fall into the lava by mining the cobblestone from under them. Things haven't changed i feel like hahahah

I've been waiting 6 months to say this. Over the last 6 months I've watched every single Etho LP episode for the first time and I've finally caught up. I've came up with one question. Etho, have you ever considered using a program to delete old chunks you've explored but never built in to reduce file size? It seems to be a recurring issue
