Very common fault on these models is the fuel pump relay fault - it is a small relay usually underneath the right-hand of the dashboard. You can swap it with the front fog light relay - which is next to it in a emergency. I always carry a spare.

@jsc1227 Жыл бұрын
I found a thread on Matthews Volvo Site that suggests there is no fuel pump relay in the 2007 XC70 model. Instead, there is a Fuel Pump Control Module (FPCM, FPM, or PEM) located in the rear quarter panel1. Another user on the same thread mentioned that if you have a fuel pressure sensor fitted to the fuel rail, then you have a PEM. Otherwise, the relay is on the CEM above the steering column1.

Trust me.Well you did it at 3:57 you verified the fuse continuity electrically. Overall very good and informative video. Thank you.

Very common for the fuel pump control module to become faulty because on the early P2 Volvo V70's the module is fitted underneath the car just above the right side of the fuel tank. The problem is that the module case starts to corrode and it's case then let's moisture inside to the delicate electronics. The later models fitted the module inside the boot to prevent this happening. If your car starts on the crank, but struggles to keep running then there is a very good chance this is the problem. Also, the fuel pump relay can wear out in time. This relay is fitted just above the right hand footwell courtesy light, but you have to remove the 2 screws that hold the courtesy light trim and remove. The fuel pump relay is a micro relay on the bottom right side of the front fog light micro relay. You can swap these relays if need be to get you home.

Thank you ! I got stuck in the snow yesterday, now car won't start and I really suspect it's the fuel delivery. Your video has given me all the clues to look for, now I'm off to get this sorted ! I would have loved to see how you removed the seats and carpets and stuff, to have a better understanding of there in the cars the covers are. Like, does this model have two fuel tanks ? It looks like there are two covers. Also you mention the fuel pump relay is under the dash, left hand side, a commenter here says it is under the car, right side ? So where is it actually. Because it seems to me checking the relay is much easier than removing the carpet ? Also you mentionned something about "keeping the airbag plugged in to the seat" ? I think you mean the wire for the seatbelt ? (it would trigger a SRS fault if ever disconnected with battery yes ?) Fortunately I have VIDA/DICE so I hope to discover the answers to all these questions before I need to call for a towing !! Thank you !

Great site - thank you! But I'm a bit mystified. I have 2004 XC70 with sudden failure to start. Happened briefly ~18 months ago, resolved on its own and has now returned. Strong crank > no start. No fuel pressure at the Schrader valve, the fuel pump fuse and relay test OK, and swapping relays does not allow a start. Car does not have PEM - i checked every known location. I don't see one anywhere. I do not get 12V using a multimeter across any of the leads in the fuel pump harness. I only get 5V across certain pairs. The thickest wires (blue and black) show no voltage at either key position 1 or 2. No continuity across any leads on the pump side of the connection, although resistance is low across the thin leads. So it seems like I do not have 12 V delivered but the pump may also be bad? BUT there is some rodent damage to the harness. I have not investigated or attempted to repair that. Also - the tachometer does not budge when cranking in an attempt to start. Could this all be due to faulty Camshaft position sensor not registering any rpm? Thanks again!
@jesusromero5217 Жыл бұрын
if there is no voltage at the pump then we likely have wiring issue. (could be the harness messed up by the rodents) you can test the pump by checking for continuity like he did in the video with the ohm setting on the multimeter.

Hey Thomas. Does "CHECK ENGINE" on when key turned on? Do you have tachometer signal while cranking? Do you have fuel at the fuel ramp (shredder valve)? Do you have spark while cranking? Let me know how is your diag.

My volvo v70 d5 2005 gets fuel all the way to the engine but not pumping in the enjectors. no fault codes, pump in the tank works but when cranking it wont fire up because it's not taking diesel into the engine. problem started on a cold morning last wednesday at -31c, pre heated engine. 5 meters from my driveway the engine stopped but it didn't make concerning sounds, it just stopped. fuses are okay and the fuel pump relay on the top side of the fuse box clicks when testing so should work. because of your video i managed to test the pump in the tank and was able to figure out that it's working, thank you. any tips?

My Volvo V70 2.5 TDI 2001 model I think, would not start this Wednesday. When I started my car on Monday and Tuesday, it felt a bit "heavy" trying to start it up in -15 degrees celsius, but worked, I just warmed the start plugs by turning the key on, and waiting a few seconds, for two times. The next day, and when I try to start it now, it will not start. No white smoke coming from the exhaust (White exhaust meaning diesel is pumped into the engine), instead my car start making some "tick" sounds, and my dashboard is turned off for the moment I try it. The "Tick" sound I believe is the start engine trying to ignite the diesel, but I have no Idea what is wrong with my volvo. I have also tried to charge my battery, but to no use, so I would be glad for any feedback. I will try to put some diesel in the tank, because it is close to being empty but on my dashboard it says I can drive for approx 150 more km.

Hey Frederick! I would drain water separator and then change primary and secondary fuel filters. Sounds like engine has fuel starvation, know issue on diesels due to moisture in fuel and dirty filters. I won't trust fuel sender unit, seems like it doesn't read correct level. I would put fresh winter diesel and go from there. Let me know how everything is going. Cheers!

Hey Layton! Try to unplug MAF sensor first, know issue on Volvo P2 chassis, and start the engine - ECU should switch into default mode to keep engine running. Do you have any DTC codes? Do you have tachometer reading while cranking?

Just so you know, the blue cap on fuel rail has a bump on the back. Simply turn it around and relieve the pressure. It should squirt out a thimble full on your fingers. No need for a screwdriver.

Can't tell if its a sensor or the fuel pump,the print out says sensor, but the mechanic says, its not getting gas ,do you think its the fuel pump..it stopped on me yesterday..
@tiffanywilladsen45372 жыл бұрын
A lot of "mechanics" just swap parts at you expense instead of troubleshooting it properly. Also, that is more expensive and more labor to replace the fuel pump. It usually is NOT the pump itself but the various sensors that report to the ecm, which then sends out to the PCM ( Pump Control Module). Start with the easy stuff if unable to troubleshoot. Fuses, relays, sensors, then only go to the expensive stuff like PCM or pump

2004 Volvo XC70 wagon AWD 2.5 litre 5 cylinder turbo 265,00 km with low fuel rail pressure problem causing engine no start conditions or starting then immediate stopping. The fuel rail gauge pressure now reads 20 psig with key on and the same under cranking same start and stop. I did get car started in my driveway about a week ago but the fuel pressure would not exceed 32 psig which I believe should be at least 60 psig and hesitated when stepping on the gas pedal. I tried to start again and back to the crank but no start. I installed new fuel filter last summer and battery in wheel well and the car ran fine up until recently and then kept getting worse.I have checked with Volvo dealer parts dept with the car vin# and they tell me there is fuel pressure sensor part # 31272730 located on the fuel rail and the PEM fuel control module part #30742823 above the gas tank are part of this fuel delivery system that may be causing this problem and even sent me Volvo diagrams of the fuel delivery system with part numbers ect. Checking my car there is no fuel pressure sensor on the engine fuel rail or I cannot locate the PEM module, looked everywhere for it. Should I be looking at checking and or replacing fuel pump and fuel pump relay and if so how do you remove back seats to access fuel pump . I would much appreciate any help or suggestions here, thanks, James.
