I Come from Stockholm, Sweden. In about 1980 i was going through a "cheap-box" in a store. Came across a movie- soundtrack to a Jack Nicholson -movie i had missade called the Border. Bought it for a few crowns. On it was a version of "Across the bordetline" featuring my heroe Ryland P Cooder and a soft singer from way down where it happens called Freddy Fender! Still think it is the ultimate version.

One of the most incredible songs ever written with deep emotions of reality. Does not matter who sings it !!! They all express emotions of desparation of people who would take the chance , perhaps loose their life in search of a better life . It expresses life of all people in desparation around the world living in poverty !! Beautiful musicians !!!!!!! First time I heard them play !! WOW ! Love them !! Thank You !!

Gaby Moreno should be mentioned in the caption. Also, for any fans of hers or the song, check it out her recent version with Van Dyke Parks conducting a small orchestra and Jackson Browne contributing vocals. He's good, but admittedly Ray Wylie Hubbard is extraordinarily powerful!

This song reminds us of how much we have in common- dreams for ourselves and those we love and that there should be no reason for Mexicans to endure the racism and discrimination assaulting them upon arrival. We white privileged Americans have some serious questions to answer and karma to face. These lyrics are chilling and painfully honest - we are the “broken Promised Land”. We have the power to change this story of suffering. The Mexican people are kind, hard working, compassionate, intelligent and trustworthy. That was my experience when living in Mexico. Think of you own family having to make that decision- the desperation in having to leave your HOME to be able to save your family and survive, as many of our European ancestors did in the 1900s. We are brothers and sisters in the family of humanity and need to care for each other. Remember our history, we crossed the Mexican border as we stole their land. (Written by R’s wife)

Our “white priveledge” was earned with hard work and lots of young men and women dying to protect it! What did those sneaking across the border do to earn their place here?? I’ll wait for the answer

Beautiful performance.......Gaby Merinos voice is absolutely superb. Much better than the odd and mediocre performance of this song on her CD 'Spangled' with Jackson Browne. .....Van Dyke Parks? Hmmm!

Now here for those of you who were listening is a musical joke. The song is "Across the borderline" fair enough . This is followed by an instrumental that is known "Under the Double Eagle." This is an old country western tune. So you go across the border and you're under the double eagle or in the USA if you like.
@peterbonta8916 жыл бұрын
Close, but no guitar... Under the Double Eagle (Unter dem Doppeladler)" is a march composed by Josef Franz Wagner (1856 1908). He was an Austrian military bandmaster and composer, sometimes known by the sobriquet 'The Austrian March King'. This march is referring to the double eagle in the coat of arms of the Austro-Hungarian empire.

All your liberal hypocrite politicians and entertainers piss and moan about what they screamed to the top of their lungs for months was a "made up crisis" and now they show up for a few hours at the border for photo ops and a chance to speak into a MSNBC camera probably spending so little of time there that their armpits were still dry, shedding bid crocodile tears while tripping over the homeless living on the streets in their own states and districts.

okay: 1: a very nice version, but: The Cooder version has much more feel to it. 2: Ray Wylie H ubbard is no added value (as in sings little, adds no guitar value, and thinks it has " a lot of chords". He just gets in the way of an otherwise fine performance. These guys are doing fine without him. Still feels like they're trying to out-Cooder Cooder. All due respect, but: can't be done.
@stephens58076 жыл бұрын
RWH may have a point. Watch the Dylan Farm Aid version; he trimmed the chord structure down a bit. Jim Dickinson (wrote verse 2) said in an interview that after hearing this version, he changed how he performed it.
