You skipped a step. You have to raise the muffler back up before you raise the hitch and attach it to the middle bracket. Otherwise the muffler hits the hitch and you cant get the muffler bracket back on.

What tools are you using to take off the muffler?

Failed to mention that the center fishing hole will most likely need to be enlarged to accommodate the "carriage block" to fit through when fishing into mounting holes.
