Hello neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer and today we're taking a look and installing the EcoHitch trailer hitch receiver on a 2022 Tesla model Y. Now this is what our hitch looks like when it's installed, and that's the magic of this one in particular that makes it a little bit more unique, is to gain access to your hitch, you're simply gonna pull on this Tesla emblem and there's gonna be some magnets that hold our cover into place and when we pull that back, that's gonna allow us to gain access to our receiver. And this is kind of unique, you don't have this on any other vehicle that I've seen during my installs and it's kind of cool they use the Tesla emblem to allow you to pop this off because normally, there's no easy way to really pop this out. All the clips are in the inside and you have this underbody panel. So gaining access to your hitch is not exactly easy and this is a good way to solve that and it looks good in the process. This is gonna be a two-inch by two-inch receiver tube opening, which is gonna be an awesome size for a bunch of different accessories.
So whether you're putting a cargo carrier or a bike rack or even a ball mount, you're gonna have plenty of options available to be able to do that. Now all of your accessories are gonna be using a 5/8 pin and clip, which does not come with the hitch, but this is how you keep your accessories in place. Now a normal one's gonna work just fine, but if you wanna pick up a locking one, that way you can leave your accessories on, locked in place so no one's gonna walk away with them. We have plenty of options available here at etrailer. Now if you plan on towing a trailer, you do have your safety chain loops.
They're pretty high up here so you can still get your standard S hook and even a larger clevis-style hook on here. I would recommend maybe picking up some D-rings and that way it's not gonna rub against the bumper or down here. That way it might just kind of open it up a little bit better. But you can see it's pretty far tucked up there, so just kind of keep that in mind if you do plan on pulling a trailer. Now as far as capacities go, if you do plan on pulling a trailer or having accessories loaded up you're gonna want to know what you can load on.
And this one has a gross trailer weight rating of 3,500 pounds, which is the weight of the trailer plus the accessories loaded onto it. You also have a tongue weight rating of 350 pounds, and that's gonna be that downward pressure that's put on the inside of the receiver tube opening. So your cargo carriers and bike racks, you can load that up to 350 and that hitch is gonna be able to handle that. Now you do wanna check your vehicle's owner's manual to see what the car is capable of before just hooking up and towing, and then take the lowest of those numbers. That way you stay safe.
Now when choosing accessories, measuring from the center of the hitch pin hole to the furthest point of the rear fascia, it's about five inches. So that's something to consider if you're using a fold-up accessory or even a ball mount, you're gonna want this to extend out far enough to not make contact with your fascia. So that's something to keep in mind. Now as far as installation goes, I would say that this one is intermediate at best. It's not terribly hard, but you do have to take the fascia off, as well as the taillights, to be able to bolt this up behind your bumper beam. But overall, if you kind of follow along with our install you should be able to get this knocked out with a basic set of hand tools. So let's take a look at that now. We're gonna begin our installation. We're gonna open up our rear hatch and we're gonna wanna make sure that we get our scuff panel taken off here. Now there should be some internal clips here that we'll pry up to get this scuff panel taken out. So pretty easy here. Normally if you can get a plastic trim tool, you can kind of start prying up here. So you wanna make sure that you're not cracking this. So we're gonna kind of just start on the edge here. We're gonna try to get one of our clips to pop, which we got one there, which I can hear. And then we're just gonna work your way down and then start on the other side and make your way towards the middle until you get this whole panel popped off. Now we'll see the weather stripping here might kinda hold it in place, so just kind of peel that back for now and that should help release this. There we go and we can set this aside for later reinstallation. Now if you need to see where the clips are, you can see kind of how they're evenly spaced, so kind of prying right at tha
